Quick Tutorial from Captain Dave Hansen on how to catch tuna in deep waters with a simple torpedo weight. This is a good strategy to quickly present your live bait to the tuna that are sub surface to deep in the water column. This is particularly technique is effective when fishing for yellowtail and tuna that are under neath the pod of dolphins. Applying the weight to the fishing line with a San Diego jam knot is one of the best knots to use when attaching it to the main line.
Try this live bait tuna rig, life bait yellowtail rig a try!

I like this. The only question I have is about that last knot o the hook. I'm inclined to go SD knot again vs the modified slip. Any thoughts on that Mr. Hansen? Thanks much!

Improved Clinch vs San Diego. Have you ever tested them against each other. I use the IC all the time for salmon and steelhead and would love to know they are comparable. I really like the in-line weight, the way you did it. Seems much better than the rubber band. The Clinch is easier for me to tie since I've been using it for 40+ years. Good video. Thanks for sharing. I was just thinking though my torpedo weights that I usually use the rubber band with just have a hole on each end, not wire or eye, only lead eye. Are you using different weights than the ones you get a fisherman's?

Great video Captain! Gona try this over here in south Florida to see if I can get past the blue runners and into the tuna below. Do you think a in line bullet weight in between two swivels could also work?

Honestly I'm not sure how well this rig would work in FL, the tuna are usually really leader shy so the weight that close to the hook and such a short length of fluoro would probably spook fish off unless they're really boiling, and then you run the risk of getting another fish attacking the lead. Big difference between SoCal and FL is that in FL there are way more toothy fish like macks and cuda that love to bite off rigs.

Am I seeing this correctly--you tie a leader to an eye on the torpedo and the fluorocarbon to the other eye? Is the through I wire on a sinker strong enough for big 200 lb tuna?

Wow you guys must have some kind of crazy bite there because in the bahamas or most of the East coast U.S. that rig would not get bit by yellowfin or really any tuna of size and if it did the odds of another tuna attacking your lead and snapping off the hooked fish are pretty high. Too short of fluoro and weight too close to the hook. A big donkey yellowfin would mess that rig up too.
