Youthman, back of disc box shows it's in 2.40:1. Anyway, because the aspect ratio of the menu is 16:9 you have to get involved with button pushing on the remote to see the image properly? Seems like an auto detect mode would be useful.

Great video. I learned a lot but still have so much mote I need to learn. I'm wondering if it might be better to have a 16:9 aspect ratio screen so you only have to deal with the bars on the top and bottom? Again, I'm a novice and just learning. I know most movies are filmed in the 2:35 though so just trying to figure this out. Thank you.

What about the cropping feature to mask out the overshoot above and below when a 16x9 image is set to 2.35. There is a still a grey bar being shown outside the screen that needs masked out.

Good info, I had an anamorphic lens in my old theater. I could control the Anthem D2 processor to instantly change aspect ratio with just one click on the remote. So I'm wondering how to handle this on the new theater. I'm looking at the JVC LX-NZ3 projector but I haven't looked into its capabilities for this. I'm hoping to not need the lens this time but I suppose I can get one if I have to. You may be able to set up your projector to switch modes with just one button press on the remote, on the Anthem this could only be done through the Anthem's RS232 port so I had an IR to RS232 converter. It may or may not be possible to do something like this on your projector, if so it would make it a lot quicker and easier because you don't even have to bring up a menu on the screen, just click the button you have designated for the aspect ratio you need. Edit: Yes it looks like the JVC NX7 provides a lot of control through the RS232 so you probably can set it up to be a single button press. Here are the details for the RS232... www.us.jvc.com/projectors/pdf/2018_ILA-FPJ_Ext_Command_List_v1.2.pdf I'll have to look for a new source for an IR to RS232 adapter, unfortunately the company that made the one I had was a one man show and sadly he passed away last year. He was actually a very dear friend.

So I don't necessarily have to have an anamorphic lens with the NX7 to have constant image height. Perfect! Thanks! My new theater is making progress, the house is pretty much framed now, can't wait for it to be finished so I can move in and start putting together the theater. This whole project is getting expensive so if I can make do without the lens at least in the beginning that will help a lot. Thanks for posting this, you made my day! As for the throw distance, I can be back as much as about 27', I assume that should do it without having to zoom?

It doesn't have an auto shift like the Panny 8000? Or is that another option? Man that movie would switch back and forth so much between aspect ratios.... My 8000u would just adjust and focus, then it'd switch back to the other AR! Kinda frustrating switching so much...

Unfortunately, I am on the very threshold at just over 16'. Check out www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm. They show a minimum of 17' 9". It's definitely closer than that as my entire room is 19' and my screen is around 3-4' in front of the wall.

Great walkthrough of those features. When you're zooming, is the whole projected image area increasing and spilling outside of your screen, or just the image within the projected area? (If that makes sense)
@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 4 жыл бұрын
Once you have zoomed and shifted to the correct settings for your scope ratio screen, the top and bottom of the 16x9 image will be spilling equally off the screen, but mostly not the sides. With the scope zoom approach, you're just blowing up a 16x9 image to visibly get rid of the black bars on wider image content. With this approach you should have black velvet fabric paneling a little below and above the screen's built-in velvet wrapped frame. That way the stray light will get soaked up and you will see little to no black bar spill because it is projected video black, not true black and you don't want it to be visible.

I would love to see how the 3D works on this projector. I have a passive modulator to convert the signal into passive 3D, like you see in movie theaters. Also, I thought this projector had a deep enough black that there would be no gray bars. Isn't that how Dolby Vision/HDR10 works? I'm unfamiliar with it so that's why I'm asking. Don't want to spend a few thousand on this projector for it not to operate the way I thought it would. Thanks.

I have an anamorphic lens and the NX has settings for the lens. Changing from 16:9 to 2.35 doesn’t require playing with lens shift/zoom. Another advantage is it handles IMAX using full screen. The switch for aspect is selecting Anamorphic C or D and is instant.

Anamorphic lens is the best approach, although often costs as much or more than the projector itself.

A lot of newer IMAX alternating ratio films have been center framed, so that the inserted IMAX footage with a 1.78:1 or 1.90:1 ratio can be cropped top and bottom and nothing important is lost when translated to a completely scope, non-IMAX theater screen. Just be sure to have black velvet panel strips above and below your scope screen to mop up any stray image spill.

Hi, Youthman! Great videos! I guess you’re not doing Constant Image Height (CIH)? Would the image be better if you use CIH by using an anamorphic lens?
@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 4 жыл бұрын
You would retain a bit more clarity and brightness since you aren't zooming and expanding on the pixel pattern of the image. However, an anamorphic lens of any quality that is 4k and maybe even 8k ready could cost thousands of dollars and possibly many times the cost of your projector if you don't have a top of the line model. If you have the means, the A lens approach is the best option.

Dan is correct. Anamorphic lenses often cost as much, if not more than the projector.

By the way for the zoom function, what I believe the setting does is zoom your image to use the full horizontal line of pixels. As this is a 4K projector your resolution is 4096x2160 and the source will almost certainly be inputting a 3840x2160 image (UHD image which is often referred to as 4K despite it not being accurate). Therefore at 16x9 you want Native as that give you the full height, but if you press zoom you would effectively be converting that to a 16x10 (1.85:1) ratio. However, you will just been cutting off a slither from the top and bottom so it does not make sense unless you are watching content in that ratio. When you use the Zoom function, it will simply expand the image so that you can use all the horizontal pixels rather than vertical, and because the source is still 3840 x 2160, it will just scale it onto 4096x2160, again cutting the top and bottom, but because there is no information there anyway, it does not matter. Hope that helps if you did not already know. Regards.

I am liking my 1:85 screen. It is 9’ wide x 5’ hi and plays all the aspect ratios just fine with no lens adjusting. Sure, there are black bars on some movies and some fill the screen (1:85). I never see the black (not grey) bars as the room is dark. It does not seem to me a good idea to have content cut off top and bottom on menu, extra features and other 16:9 content when lens shifting to 2:35 ratio. You gave a good explanation of how it functions.

So what happens with aspect ratios like 21:9?
@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 4 жыл бұрын
The few movies shot wider than scope would have thin black bars on the top and bottom of the zoomed image. You can also do the zoom method for 2.0:1 and 2.20:1 content, but you will end up with a little bit of blank screen on the sides of the image. That's where electronic masking panels help, though the costs do go up. It's very hard to accommodate every aspect ratio ever used. That's why even most commercial theaters (which might actually start to die out due to the virus) only have projection setups for 1.85:1 and 2.39:1 ratios (those are the two most common theatrical ratios). Side or top and bottom masking is used for everything else.

And if so what is it labeled as, so to look for it when purchasing a projector? Also, very much sold on the 2.35: 1 or 2.40: 1 format than 16:9. Great content, recent subscriber, keep it up

Thank you Joey. Not every projector will offer that feature. Most refer to it as lens memory since it’s a preset that is made for zoom, lens shift and focus for each aspect ratio you want to make one for. Check Epson, JVC and Sony. When I had Panasonic projectors, they would do it as well but they are no longer making home theater projectors.

@@Youthman If you are watching 16:9 content on a 16:9 screen would there be overlap from the projector? What is the native aspect ratio of the projector?
@Youthman
@Youthman 3 жыл бұрын
Native aspect ratio is 16:9 so yes, when you zoom in to fill a 2.35:1 screen, the light bleeds above and below the screen. You can use digital masking within the projector to remove that bleed over but if there is any content like blueray menu options, play and pause icons etc, they might get cut off. This is what I call the "poor man's anamorphic setup". The best option is to use an anamorphic lens and sled but the problem is adding that will often cost more than what you paid for your projector so this is an affordable option.

Why do you have to switch anything? A computer screen or tv for example adapts the aspect ratio on the fly. Movies are many aspect ratios, not just 2

A projector isn't a TV nor a computer. The lens has to physically move to adapt its aspect ratio. Also, there's only a handful of movies that have varying aspect ratios: www.avsforum.com/forum/117-2-35-1-constant-image-height-chat/2811713-list-variable-aspect-ratio-movies-blu-ray.html

What if you're watching a film like The Dark Knight that switches back and forth between 16:9 and anamorphic throughout the screen? :) You'll be sitting there with remote in hand pressing that picture mode button throughout the film. :) Even if you had an anamorphic lens put on...there will be spill when back to 16:9 (assuming you have a 2.35:1 screen). Something you talk about here. Or do a video on the pros and cons of going with a screen/projector VS flatscreen. Is it REALLY worth it? Honestly.
@Youthman

For the very few films that switch between IMAX and 2.35:1, it’s no big deal to me for it to spill above and below the screen for the few seconds of that clip or scene. I’m not worried about 0.5% of movies that switch between aspect ratios.

basically all movies on ultra HD blu-ray and blu-ray are in 16 9 formats. and if you have a player who tells you what format is on the movie it will also say that it is 16: 9 what you think is 21 9 format it is in fact 16 9 with mailbox format. and there may be problems with subtitles. However, I know that there have been players from Philips there You could move up the text and It is simply because at that time Philips sold televisions in the 21: 9 format .The disadvantage of you zoom in on an image where you are not part of the image coming off the screen or the image we are a little drawn out. that is, which is clearly visible if you have a football in the picture

www.visionliving.com.au/home-cinema/isco-anamorphic-lens-with-motorised-cineslide/id-Xf#.Xq7N3S-z1p_ Take note that each time you are using that zoom feature to blow up the image you are loosing roughly 30% pixels AND 30% brightness.
