The CAT VR set up reminds me of the CNC machines we had at my polytech. They weren't for students to use. That would be silly, they're too big and expensive for a student to break. Their real purpose was to show off how advanced and highly resourced the school was to media, politicians, donors, and of course the prospective students at an open day (I was fooled.) The open days were the only time I ever saw them run.
@wedgeoflemon4 ай бұрын
There's a massive machining marketing channel, Titans of CNC, that was built by an ex-con that supposedly learned in there. Very pull yourself up by the bootstraps coded. I think certain trades like that are a common push, because the pay vs skill gap is insane so they need to force people into it. I loved machining, but I was very naive to think it'd pay and I'd be able to make more than weapon components to bomb other countries.
@NoSkates4 ай бұрын
@@wedgeoflemon I recognised that too, and pivoted my study towards Civil Engineering. I'm stuck behind a computer drawing sewer pipes in AutoCAD, but at least I can pay rent without "borrowing" money from the parents. Yeah, I have a feeling that’s the purpose of their “rec room” as well. That pool table was immaculate. I actually think MrWhoseTheBoss is quite good normally. Can't really blame him for only focussing on the tech parts of the prison, because his channel is about tech... The tone of the video does seem a bit out of touch though. I think Arun had good intentions here, but just doesn't come across very well. As for the prison itself, I'd rather be thrown in there than somewhere else, but he could've made it clear that it's still a horrible place to be sent. 😭
@justalonelypoteto4 ай бұрын
it still feels like it's purely punishment, like "we don't trust you so there's not a square centimeter of this building that's not on live feed to the front desk's monitor, have fun rubbing one out or crying in privacy, showering or taking a dump". Plenty of countries manage to do this by taking away the freedom part, which is the actual sentence you're receiving, without the rest being negatively affected. Privacy can still be given to someone whilst keeping them confined, and hell, maybe less palpable distrust might make the people feel somewhat differently and break out less, at least the countries that do what I described seem to have it working out just fine. Maybe this is just because I'm a big pro-privacy guy, but I would go insane if I couldn't just exist outside of a camera's view
@AlfieMcSloy4 ай бұрын
@@justalonelypoteto Yeah you're right, they have it figured out in Scandinavia. Much lower chance of re-offending too. I guess the UK has the money to make the prisons more humane, but they opt for this 'high-security' bs instead because they're managed by private companies.

A friend of mine works as a teacher in a british prison (not this one, but one under the same state). The efforts to educate/train prisoners to help them get jobs after release are sincere, and the jobs they're being prepped for are not just exploitative minimum-wage stuff either. Thankfully, this kind of rehabilitation is one area that a decade plus of ill-founded austerity has yet to strip away. However, on the other hand... Literally everyone she works with in there is clearly neurodivergent and would not have ended up imprisoned had they been better supported in school, rather than being written off because of their class and chucked into a harsh world undiagnosed and unsupported. EDIT: Originally incorrectly stated that UK prisoners don't do free work. I mean, they don't technically work for *free* but it is an exploitatively low wage. However - prisoners in the UK are required to either work or be in education, and *are paid for being in education as well*.

what about it is horrifying tho? They did crimes and they are being kept inside a facility so that they don't do crimes while they are there. If you were talking about visiting the prison, I mean yeah it's a fucking building, are we suposed not to inform ourself on a building type that most of us is never going to see in their life because some criminals are there????
