Ys X Nordics had its own pride of place in John Linneman's Best Games of 2023, based on his PlayStation 5 experience, and having now taken a look at the game running on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 Pro, he's even more eager to tell you more about it. Currently it's Japan-only, but it's almost certainly coming to the West - and here's how it's shaping up.

I got talked into starting the Kiseki series a couple of years ago despite the length and started by bouncing around between Sky and the Crossbell games. I almost gave up on Sky a couple of times because of the glacial pacing of FC. Then I started Cold Steel a month ago and blitzed through it. It finally clicked. I understand why people love this series so much now. Falcom are great devs that know how to leverage their strengths (writing, basically) whilst keeping costs down and somehow releasing a new game every year.

@@agromchung Just a heads up before you'll continue with Cold Steel: you'll really want to finish Crossbell games before playing CS3 (even CS2 has parts that expect the player to have played the Crossbell games). @@jtruque -AFAIK Falcom hasn't said anything regarding new re-releases of Trails in the Sky in Japan or otherwise.- With that being said the Sky games are available in English on PC (Steam and GOG). Even if you just have a weak laptop you should still be able to play them just fine due to how old those games are. You can even configure them to work with a PS4/PS5 controller. Edit: After seeing the comment below I looked into this and apparently Falcom is considering its options regarding a Sky re-release. With that being said it's worth keeping in mind that an English re-release of Sky will run into the issue of Trails publishing rights being split between XSEED who localized the Sky trilogy as well as the first two Cold Steel games and NISA who is the current publisher of Falcom games in the west.

I was part of the massive swath of folks that didn't have a TG-16 growing up, and it wasn't until I heard online "whispers" of the best traditional 2D side-scrolling Castlevania was on the system that I had to find a way to emulate it. Years later, I was introduced to Ys through Ys VIII. I went back the next year to play through all the games available in the series. No one probably knows what I'm talking about, but the strange thing about the 1990 Ys Book I&II on the TG-16 CD system is that even though it was made with the expectation for 4:3 aspect ratio, it feels like it was originally meant for 16:9 and the screen looks smooshed on 4:3. Generally, it seems like JP players just don't care enough about graphics for a format like this to make sense, many will just generally talk about graphics being good or bad or sth. inbetween. But detailed comparisons are just not what the general JP audience is interested in it seems.

@@anabang1251 Sad but true. And that mindset isn’t limited to video games. I don’t know if you know this, so sorry if I tell you something you already know, but basically as a consumer they’ve been brought up to just buy without asking more than which brand something is from. I’m from Germany and you wouldn’t believe how many test/review magazines there are for everything, still to this day. I know no one who doesn’t buy a magazine and/or informs themselves online diligently before purchasing something that costs more than a couple of bucks. Here in Japan? There is one magazine that tests household appliances and other items but it’s so shallow that the result is mostly yeah the big brand expensive one is good. It’s completely baffling. Then again when I go to the doctor here it’s also this 曖昧 bs like “Oh, your throat is red, I’ll give you some antibiotics.” and I’m like soo you won’t tell me what it is but it’s red? Am I a child or do you not know what it is? The doctors in Germany tell you exactly what you have or what they think you probably have and which other possibilities there are. It’s maddening here in Japan. Alas, sorry for the rant but it felt nice to read from someone who knows the pain. ;)

I'm glad to see that DF loves Ys too! There is no bad Ys game, one of my favorite franchises that I recommend to everyone! Happy with the new engine and new mechanics, but honestly, the game should run better on PS4.

Thank you for also taking a look at the PS4 Pro version for us people who don't own a PS5 yet :) I hope they release this version over here too. Might also be a candidate for getting an update for the Switch successor maybe?

So glad to see Falcom love on this channel , I'm happy to know that the Switch port is perfectly playable, I may get it for PC but if timing is right I could wait to play it on Switch 2.

Lacrimosa of Dana made me refall in love with Ys all over again, so i'm pretty excited with Nordics. I'll probably gonna miss the active party of the previous entries, but hopeful either way.

Played the chinese version of X Nordics at the start too. On Switch. Still lacrimosa is the best in my heart. Played at every console and pc , even Vita.

John pleas look into doing a df retro or review of falcoms other series Trails. We know ys is pretty much mainstream but with df on trails it could push it to mainstream audiences and get other big content creators to try the series

Trails is more popular than Ys, it has a bigger fanbase and has sold more games.

@@Hamlock_Ys had more spotlight on before trails in the sky. I have seen slightly more ads and promotions for ys in the last 15 years than trails. Some of the younger gamer will recognize trails more due to cold steel arc but the older gamers around John age range atleast are aware and know ys. This is me personally I have saw trails in the sky fc, cold steel 1 and reverie only promoted on sites but seen every ys game from ys ark to ys 9 get promoted everywhere.

I love the Y's games. They don't visually look as good as your standard AAA games, but man they make up for it in gameplay, story, and music. Really fun games, I do recommend!
