The trend to pick up older cars to build up and drive around is picking up, especially now as cars become more and more expensive. Rather than pick up any used car, it is worth picking up a better- known brand, albeit older model to rebuild. This is the story of how I found and built up this 24 year old 318i. Enjoy, and don't forget to share.

I owned a Merz W124 260E year 1991. After driving for 500,000km, I changed a used engine for around RM2,500.00 and passed it to my son. Now the mileage is closed to 580,000km and still running strong. Less electronic, less problem. Built like a tank like you said, they don't build this type of car anymore.

used to own the same car. 1991 260e. The best car Ive ever owned! regret selling it. I also owned a E36 318i manual, same as YS Khong. Also a very fun car. Unfortunately, due to Singapore COE rule I had to scrap it.

Thanks for sharing! My E39 has hit RM12k over the last 8 months, but that excludes RM4k spent on a set of rims and tyres.

Hi Kon, nice seeing you here. Any chance you'll do a vid of the total yearly ownership cost of your e39 once you reached 1 year of ownership? Or even basic and major service cost would do :)
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving 5 жыл бұрын
What was the 8 k spent on? Curious to know if it was for breakdown or replacement of parts due to wear and tear or service parts. On my part, paint, seats and replacement of old body trip took up most of the cost. Servicing cost about 2k.
@KonWaiLuen

In my case. The money all went into mechanical bits. Refurbished the suspension, changed radiator, hoses, brake master & servo pump, variable intake manifold (DISA) valve, changed front suspension arms, ignition coils, spark plugs

My own E36 didn't need any major work and I've got less that £1000 in it (including the £250 purchase price). It started out as a project and is now my 2nd car. It is pretty much as it left the factory and currently has just over 96,000 miles on the clock backed up by the extensive early service history and every single MoT certificate (the MoT is the annual UK roadworthiness test that all cars 3 years old or more need to be used on the road).

Wow, that's nice to hear. Mine has done 145,000 miles. Originated in UK, now is in Malaysia. My latest adventure was a clutch slave cylinder failure. Replaced for about £80 (parts and labour), now needs an air conditioner high pressure hose that got busted. Earlier I had to change a larger condenser for the aircond because the UK one is only half the size of the local one. Our temperatures here are tropical. I am looking for the B- pillar inner plastic cover - the plastic is cracking up on both sides and I cannot find it here in Malaysia.

@@YSKhongDriving I've done quite a few videos with my E36 so please feel free to check them out. The good thing about the E36 is that it they're not moneypit cars unlike some of the newer models.

Got my 1997 E36 318i with M43 timing chain engine on October 2020 for RM7k, blown the head gasket on day 2 due to bad radiator fan wiring job did by previous owner, saving money to do the top overhaul now🥲, but still it can be drive about 100km before need to topup the coolant. But still looking forward to restoring it.

YS, the E36 aircon has a cabin filter. It's located behind the centre console, accessible from driver's side. Because its not easily accessible, 99% of aircon service do not attend to it. KZfaq will have some DIY videos. Once you change the filter... . the air flow will improve a lot. And you will be "COOL" ! Please change the expansion tank if you do not know its history
@YSKhongDriving

I found the AC condenser to be half size since the car was originally registered in UK. It is much colder now. About the AC filter, we sit on the right hand side - is that the driver's side you are referring to? You might be from a lh drive country, so I thought I would check. I will certainly look for it. I was told by my AC man there is no filter.

Hi, my bmw e90 320i pre lci suspension is very bad over cement surfaces or uneven roads, having hard knocks. but drives and goes over speed bumps well. Have changed my absorbers to oem sach's and some of the cracked mounts. still facing the same problem, have brought the car to a few mechanics and they told me its bearable. to clarify i test drove a 323i lci model and it drove so perfectly im not satisfied with my ride comfort. can you recommend me a place where i can bring my car for a check?
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving 4 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with who are the experts on BMW suspension but it looks like you are suffering from too harsh a suspension, which was why I did not pick the E90. I would go for slightly softer springs and softer bound pressures, if such a shocker is available.

there is still a sizeable community of people who own e36 bmws. there are also competent "conti" workshops, and bmw specialists in the klang valley. there are also bmw spare parts stockists where you can a decent amount of parts brand new for the car.

U bought this car ? This was the very first car that achieved 50:50 weight distribution. Good choice ! .. just change the expansion tank every 3 years and there's some small rubber heater hoses ( just near the firewall ) that hardens that needs attention.

@tiamofj842
@tiamofj842 4 жыл бұрын
The First 50:50 weight distribution car was the Alfetta series from Alfa Romeo. They achieved it by having a transaxle gearbox. Porsche's 928 came second, also with a transaxle. Having said that, BMW engineers trumped both makers since they got the half and half without resorting to a transaxle layout.

Hi Mr. Khong. Do have any idea about the automatic gearbox ? Any issues with it ?
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving 5 жыл бұрын
I heard there are issues, mostly about slip, but then, that is due to wear and tear, i think. There are clutches and plates that wear down even in automatics, and they actually need to be serviced after 4 - 5 years. Problem is people do not understand, and think the gearbox will last forever. The transmissions can now be serviced relatively easily, and quite economically, and can be as good as new. Same applies to DCT, and even CVT.
