It is really amazing that a 24 year old car can be so good to drive., The stick shift brings back memories of my motor sport days. Now we know that there are many good gems of cars to be found out there at a reasonable cost. The 318i is at the stage where it is too new to be a collector's item and too old to be of use to anybody. This will change later, so now is the best time to pick one up and keep.

it capture another category of audiences. It demonstrate to the audiences that there are still some road worthy cars with exception of non air-bags and fuel consumption. it a pleasure to watch your timing of handing stick shift as you maneuver around the road.

Yes you are right. And thanks- it was a good drive despite the low horsepower. Less power also brings out the driver's skills better.

Saw you taking most of the run on 3rd, the engine's mid-range torque quite decent eh?
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, mid range torque was decent. Besides, second woukd have been too much strain on the engine, or too slow, and 4th would be too high a gear. The best was to flow the car through at as high a speed as possible. The Michelins helped quite a bit. The balance of the car is very good.

MR Khong, i drove this car in GRA, Tarmac rally etc etc, you got the correct car and this car will last you forever. The weakest part of this car is the plastic bits, for the speaker round you can still get it from ebay if im not wrong. Take good care of the AFM (air flow meter) you may want to get one new unit for keep. the rest of the engine parts block and top is unbreakable, the most like hood of oil leak if the oil filter housing which is super cheap to fix it by changing the gasket only dont listen to bullshit from mechanic saying need to change the whole unit. The gearbox you need to do good rev match to protect the gearbox, the syncro is pretty soft. for brake pads use EBC if you can and use ATE blue for the oil. i own this car last time and i love every single minute driving it after converting it to manual from auto. ohh lastly if you can find the electric fan version you should change it because less load to the engine more power! Enjoy the car.

The E36 is more in demand, and being lighter, it drives better. The smaller size also makes it more agile.

I think the autos of those years would probably need some attention. The E36 and E46 autos had some issues then.
@tommys_chopshop9432

In a 6 cylinder variant the auto wouldn’t be too bad, but in the 318 which is already underpowered you’ll just lose power. They run different diff gears in the auto to pick up the power loss but it’s not enough.. and the e36 really is a drivers car, an auto really takes away the experience in one of these, they’re underpowered but in saying that they’re a very fast car considering the horsepower and handle a lot better than most cars built today. I travel country roads here in Australia and we have big v8 sedans over here and I followed a 2016 holden commodore SS which is the v8 performance holden and I had to go past him because he couldn’t go around corners as fast as I could or pull out of corners at speed like I could in the bmw. Best car to own and drive.

Yes, I personally think that the E36 is the best proportioned 3 series of all time, that can't be said for models after it as it has grown in size that made it look clumsy and bulky. BMW should have just stuck to the dimensions and upgraded its looks and engines. Just my 2 cents!

Awesome handling and car.However,a word of reminder,the car is old and anything can fail at any given time even with the world best caretaker.No matter how good the driver is,theres a limit on how much an old car can handle. just saw this 1 year later.. there are plenty of E36 cars that are kept in great mechanical condition. It is not a difficult thing to do if you equip yourself with some knowledge and also having a good mechanic to carry out the work. Go for a track day at the sepang circuit, and you will easily see 10 or more (recent trackday had nearly 20 E36 cars) of these cars on track. These are road cars, and not track cars. Also, my own E36, a 2.8 litre model which is nearly 25 years old now, has been tracked, drifted, competed in time attack competition, daily driven to work, and is still my favoured car for weekend drives and long distance travel. Cars are meant to be driven and if you take care of them, they will take care of you no matter how old.

Very easy if you have normal shoes on. I wear work boots most of the time and find the pedals are too close together for wide work boots. Heel toe is extremely easy in one of these but if you have big shoes like work boots make sure you’re careful shifting quick, I once went to clutch while shifting quick and accidentally clipped the brake pedal and nearly sent myself through the windscreen!
