Thinking of doing YTP style videos, uploading this to gauge interest.
Hey guys, so I'm uploading this as an experiment. I know a lot of you wanna see more movie reviews, but I got a very frequent and understandable criticism with them: your jokes are good, but your pacing isn't. I spent too long setting up each joke, and with the Toy Story review in particular, I made so many 'edited jokes', I could basically cut them out of the 31 minute review and upload them as their own video; essentially turning it into a KZfaq Poop. I find it crazy how I took 5 minutes worth of jokes and stretched it out into a 31 minute video. Talk about wasting people's times (and the watch time on my KZfaq analytics confirms this as 50% of viewers click away after the first 30 seconds).
And people generally are not interested in this review format anymore. I know! Maybe you are! But one of the top comments on the Toy Story review was someone saying:
"The only case in which I'd watch a 30 minute toy story review is if Suspect made it." (this got over 70 upvotes!)
So that doesn't bode well for getting new viewers huh?
Yeah, "reviews" (especially reviews of singular movies/games) don't do well on KZfaq anymore, and many critics have had to make changes (e.g. Caddicarus, who no longer does reviews of singular games, but instead, picks a theme and does mini-reviews around that theme). It's done wonders for his channel.
I'm thinking, scrap the Nostalgia Critic format, and just make YTPs (which do much better view-wise on KZfaq than reviews do). It would allow me to just have fun making jokes, rather than making surface-level nitpicks and using them to springboard into jokes. Why spend 30 minutes wasting time with setups, when I could just get straight to the laughs?
I get that you guys might enjoy hearing my thoughts, but honestly, everything I say in my reviews has already been said by countless other critics. And that is incredibly demotivating. It's the reason why I haven't made many reviews lately. It's cause I feel as though I have nothing interesting to say about them. With video games, I feel a bit more confident in that regard, as there's a ton of mechanics to talk about there. But with a movie, it's more about 'artistic expression', and reviewing that is something I can't do well.
In short, I get a much bigger kick out of making you guys laugh, not so much with sharing my opinions on things anymore. I'm not saying I'm gonna stop doing opinion-based content, but I would only ever do it if I felt I had something to say on a subject (e.g. the video on what I'd change about the Star Wars Sequels or why I hate movie theaters). These were so much more fun to make as I had actual strong opinions on a subject. But going through a movie a la Nostalgia Critic, essentially means you have to have thought-provoking thoughts on every scene in a movie. And many times, I go blank (notice how in my Matrix review, I never even talked about the bullet time sequence, it's cause I had nothing to say about it, but it felt very wrong to skip it). So I ended up having to force myself to have opinions on pivotal moments of a movie, and it makes some jokes in my reviews feel very contrived and forced.
I apologize about how experimental the channel's been lately. Honestly, it's been maddening; figuring out what direction I wanna go. Just wanna thank you all for sticking with me over the years. Hopefully I can find my footing sooner than later.

glad you're hanging in there. are you going to do more of your edited jokes from your movie reviews and turn them into a complation just like this one?

The edits and sketches you make are really funny and I reckon you’re right, if you started making YTPs you might get a lot of views. I think it’s a good direction for the channel. At least it’s something to experiment with to see if it works out. Keep up the good work!

If I can offer my input, I've been a long time viewer of yours and have never found any issue with the length of your videos, and can admit to watching pretty much all of your reviews several times over. I think video length doesn't really matter if the content is entertaining enough. The comment likely got that many upvotes because it is true that if a video is entertaining enough it can be over 30 minutes long and not feel as if you've spent that long watching. Your personality is instantly likeable, the jokes are funny, and it's interesting hearing facts about a movie and your personal take on it overall. I may be in a smaller camp with my opinion but I generally do like longer videos that are more than just the jokes. The other parts of your reviews never felt like filler, moreso the glue that held them together. It was that mix of interesting facts and humour that kept me watching. Either way though I'll keep watching what you put out! Would like to hear other people's thoughts on this as well.

Yeah YT has very clearly moved towards short form content and this is a far better option. I’ve seen all of these jokes before and yet I still enjoyed watching this whole video because there so funny. It’s good to experiment and I hope u find something that works.

Not gonna lie, I'm gonna miss the reviews (they reminded me the old times). But these jokes were my favorite parts of those videos, so this experiment is great. I would also try adding some of the live action jokes 'cause they were great too

This is a bit like a ytp but I don’t think all the jokes work without context But if you made a video designed to be a ytp will do great, I could easily see you as the new the master poop. You edit is seriously up to that level.

It needs some reverses, sentence mixing, stutter loops. Really a lot of the ytp staples. Cause these are good, but these types of jokes mixed in with the staples helps the variety. But he does have Michael Rosen so he's already one step ahead.

I think the KZfaq Poop route could work out. However, as a viewer who has been watching your content for a while, the highlight of your channel is you! Your personality, and the way you present jokes. So I still think it would be good to have videos featuring you, because you are awesome. I wish you the best of luck, and I’m looking forward to see what direction this channel goes!

The jokes work great here. Was laughing all throughout. I'd say you certainly know how to make people laugh with such, so the YTP stuff would be a good avenue to explore. Maybe something Dreamworks for the first foray into full YTP videos? Or maybe the original or sequel Star Wars trilogies. No matter what you pick, I'm sure it'll be providing a lot of enjoyment.

While I understand your reasoning, I and I reckon a lot of others would be saddened to see you ditch reviews (and especially their format) entirely. Honestly never been interested in YTPs, and I think the jokes here work moreso within context, as another person said. Personally, I love hearing your thoughts on movies and you've hardly ever felt forced, if ever, imo. I say, stick to shorter reviews like the Mighty Ducks one for most stuff and for more bigger franchises like Marvel or Star Wars, do full length reviews. At least, that's what I'd do. I personally really hope you don't decide to quit reviews altogether. They're the main thing I come to your channel for, and yours are some of my favorites out there. It is your channel, your choice, I'm just giving my thoughts.

Honestly, I get why you've distanced from reviews. Content like that was (and still can be) good, but it seems no one really thinks much of it anymore. I'd honestly love to see a YTP from your channel. You have great editing, funny jokes (especially the jokes that give the movie a reality check), and this video is a good starter in that kind of direction. It goes in order of the story, and has a lot of funny external characters and lines to make everything work. Summary, an Unusual Suspect YTP would be kinda awesome.

I love your reviews, I still rewatch them to this day. You'd probably make great youtube poops! But personally what I enjoyed so much about your reviews was the bits where you're the one telling the jokes. Your delivery and timing was always great. I'd be okay with the focus being placed solely on the comedy as opposed to sticking with the review format, but leaving out the skits and stuff would be a bummer imo The look on your face when Peter runs naked across the screen and cries was so fucking perfect

Whoa, there was a bit of gore and some swearing here. And I'm not sure I should laugh at the rocket exploding with Woody and Buzz still attached to it. But there were still some that made me laugh, like Ice Age's Sid and The Simpsons' Sid popping up, the rocket blasting past Ewoks and a boy from Harry Potter, Buzz retching at Al burping and falling to Earth Looney Tunes style, Nostalgia Critic popping up next to Mr Potato Head, and Sid running into a door after being frightened by a live-action face Woody makes.

It’s unfortunate that the time of long form content has passed. Sadly the audience for it has aged out of having the time to watch it. Meanwhile the next generation of viewers has been programmed via Chinese spyware (A.K.A ticktock) to have a short attention span. It’s really disheartening to see the reviews go as I love watching them while gaming, but I understand that you need to find a new model for what is essentially your business. I wish you luck in finding a new niche for your channel even if I likely won’t be a part of it.

Sorry to say this video didn't work very well for me. The pacing is all over the place, and a lot of the bits don't land without the context. The bits were what made the review great (your Toy Story one was probably my favorite) but by themselves it feels something is missing. Maybe with better pacing something like this could work, but I think these bits are better suited in support of something. What that is is tough to say. No million dollar ideas here unfortunately. If the thing about "opinion" videos that demotivates you is that others have already covered everything, maybe it's worth finding more unique stuff to focus on. For example, seeing reviews of movies I've watched myself was fun, mainly because of the added humor, but seeing reviews of odd movies I haven't seen, or plain terrible movies, can be fun as well. The algorithm is hard to follow, but some things: * Thumbnails with a face off to the side. Stupid, but somehow true. * Clickbait titles. When growing your audience, this is the awful truth. A title like "All The Edited Jokes From My Toy Story Vid" sounds like derivative content and not particularly exciting at that. It seems possible to improve this without sinking too low. * Regular upload cadence. This seems super important. Not sure if it's for recommendations or audience retention, but it seems like if a channel goes on a break, views take a serious dip for a while. Shorter content can help. This doesn't mean no long form necessarily, if it can be split up. If anything, multi-part content means the next episode is at the top of the recommendations. It looks like you're doing this stuff with your Suspect Green channel (taking-short-form to the extreme :D ) but I think some of this might help on this channel as well.
