Alison Forster's 🧠 brain child.I never really understood why she wanted them for FGW too small for Inter City work and too large for commuter but most of her running of FGW made no sense!

While they didn’t work out for FGW, they definitely seem to be serving well with GC and with HT before retirement thanks to the lower demand on the routes. Unfortunately, they seem to be causing similar capacity issues now with EMR, especially on the 4 car 180 110, where the Buffet Car was temporarily removed for repair due to corrosion (I’m unaware of the status of these repairs)

Gosh, Alison Forster - a forgotten case of a woman over-promoted during the early Blair Labour Government era to run a railway service (the GW TOC). She seems to have had no proper management experience. After demotion she quietly left the railway industry and disappeared. Where is she now, one wonders?

@@marc21091 it wasn't Sir Tony Blair that promoted her it was Sir Muir Lockhead head of First PLC: Transforming Travel.No doubt she is Dame Alison Forster now ?When GWR,Thames Trains and Wessex merged that was about the time she was in charge and she made a terrible hash of it but like the present rail MD 's/CEO's took no responsibility blaming the Department of Transport or Network Rail for everything but being quite willing to take the MD/CEO pay but none of the responsibility.

Has this class of trains been withdrawn and scrapped? They seem to be a mistake like some of the Modernisation Plan diesel locomotive classes that had short lives and lasted less than 10 years in service is some cases.

The Class 180s are all currently in service with other operators in the UK, namely Grand Central and EMR as of 2022 (10 for GC and 4 for EMR), and have operated reliably for the past decade, changing hands a few times with FGW/GWR returning some into their service over the previous years. Aside from some incidents with Hull Trains 180s catching fire and corrosion on one of EMR’s sets (the corroded carriage being removed, shortening one train from a 5 car to a 4 car), the fleet has been operating successfully on intercity services throughout England. On my latest trip to London, one of GC’s Class 180s appears on GC’s West Riding Route from Bradford Interchange to London, Grand Central having a fleet of only Class 180s!
