Yueh Tung is one of many restaurants in Toronto that were forced to adapt given the current circumstances. The oldest Hakka Chinese restaurant in the city has made the pivot to retail, selling jars of their secret family chili sauce.

My family has been eating at Yueh Tung for well over 25 years (pushing 30) ---- before they moved to Elizabeth street. Their Chili Chicken sauce is truly something special but since the sisters took over the business you can feel a different style of management in effect. As a customer, I can say that their portions have gotten smaller and the price had gone up several times in a period of ~8 years. As someone who lives uptown, a Chili Chicken takeout used to be the one stop I always make before hitting the DVP North but with the price increase, reduced portion AND the recently (?) implemented minimum parking fee, we've stopped visiting this joint. All-in-all, if you've never been there, definitely go try it out if you are in the area, but I don't think it's a "to-die-for".

remember going here for office lunches back in the day... chili chicken.. miss Toronto Chinatown back in the day.... there was a BBQ place on the same block that did one plate Chinese BBQ on rice lunch specials...

I started eating chili chicken at Yueh Tung back in 1989 and used to eat at that restaurant once or twice a week. I just tried the bottled Chili Chicken Sauce they are selling, if you did not know how chili chicken tasted at the restaurant you would say that the bottled stuff was a good sauce, but since I do know my chili chicken, I can say that although it is a good sauce, it does not taste like the "real thing". I always thought that chili chicken had ginger in it, so I was surprised not seeing it in the list of the sauce's ingredients, nor it is called for by the instructions on how to use the sauce on the glass bottle, unlike garlic which the instructions ask you to add when preparing the chili chicken. I will try adding ginger next time and see if the "real" chili chicken flavor emerges.

The bottle does not even show the quantity or volume in ml. Strange for all the talk, the basics are not given or shown.
