I decided to rebarrel a yugo Mauser action I had. The barrel was in very poor condition, and I found an inexpensive new 308 barrel treaded for a large Mauser. This should make a great all purpose rifle.

@@AthensArmory303 Can you see if your gunsmith put a relief cut at the back of the barrel for the extractor to fit into? I'm hearing people from both sides arguing whether it is necessary or not

That looks like it's going to be a great rifle! With that long barrel and reloading with some slow powders you should be able to get some excellent velocities out of it. PTG makes some nice stuff. I've never personally bought that bottom metal, but I've been thinking about it! Who did you source the scope mount from?
@AthensArmory303 Жыл бұрын
THe scope mount is made by EGW, they make on specifically for the intermediate yugo receiver, along with almost all mauser variations. PTG parts are really very good quality and never dissapoint

Great conversion! Just wanted to ask if the detachable bottom metal magazine a SA or LA? I’ve searched online and it had both and I’m not sure which one it is, first time touching anything Milsurp. Cheers!
@AthensArmory3033 ай бұрын
It depends on the receiver you have, most 8mm receivers are LA, but the Yugo is a SA. SA receivers are 8 1/2 inch overall length and LA is 8 3/4. Hope that helps

I think these are the easiest, they are plentiful in stripped receiver form, and barrels threaded and short chambered are readily available in many calibers. I found some antique ammo a couple years ago in 6.5 Mannlicher Schoenauer, and after researching the history and legends, I think I might build one just as a unique project. I encourage everyone to build, I think you get way more building than you do buying.

@@AthensArmory303 I have a 1903 Greek mannlicher in 6.5 MS. It's a great cartridge essentially the same as the 6.5 x 55 Swede but you just can't beat the "Cool Factor" of the 100 + years of history that comes with it!

I bought the barrel from Midway, they have a small selection of Shillen barrels for Mauser actions listed on their website. I also watch Ebay and Gunbroker for barrels. Depending on caliber, there are companies that make prefit barrels for mauser large ring large thread receivers. For custom calibers and profiles I go to McGowen barrels. Let me know if you need help finding one
@ericschulze564122 күн бұрын
I'm thinking doing the same did you have to have anything done to the action to make it work cycling the 308 cartridges ? Also Did you get lucky with the barrel or did it have to be fit to the action, also how did you modify the safety
@AthensArmory30321 күн бұрын
The barrel was a direct fit from midway, once its torqued to the receiver, the only thing needed is to finish the chamber to final depth, they come with a short chamber, aprox .020 short of fully chambered, to proper headspace and thats it. The 308 seems to cycle without issue, and the bolt was just spare bolt parts, the safety housing is an aftermarket housing with no safety. Hope that helps

You said he re blued it but there's a barrel. Did they redo the bolt and carrier or what? Very cool rifle I'm kind of new to guns and building guns.

Welcome to the hobby. I am new to video making, but Ive been building rifles for about 10 years with the help of a trusted local gunsmith. Always seek the expertise of a professional gunsmith. They reblued the barrel and receiver. The bolt is left unfinished.

Is the Yugo action shorter then the 98? What would be a good book or video to learn about Mausers? Like the difference between Lrg and sm ring 98's... Thanks
@AthensArmory303 Жыл бұрын
I made a very basic video overview of the 98 series variations. Yes the Yugo is about 1/4 inch shorter than the "standard" 98. Also some large ring variants have the small barrel threads of a small ring. The best resource for variant differences in Mausers is from Hoosier gun works. www.hoosiergunworks.com/catalog/mauser_reference.html

Im picking up a 1895 mauser, and I'm looking to change the caliber. I want to try to change to 300 blk, can you give any advice or place I can go for advise on my build?
@AthensArmory303 Жыл бұрын
Best advice is to find a good gunsmith in your area. Mauser actions are great platforms for custom rifles. For this round, I would go to McGowan barrels for the barrel. You can build a custom barrel, in your caliber and traded for your action, in any profile you want. Its easy to build out on their website, and they also offer installation if you dont have a local gunsmith. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

Hello sir. I have question for you... I have zastava m70 bolt action rifle in 308 win... And i wanna swap barrel for 6.5 creeedmoore (coz they are have simmilary case lenght, and action right? ).. What barrel can i buy to fit with that action, what model, number of threaded? And, is that posible with small gunshmithing? Thank you, best regards!
@AthensArmory3034 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. Sorry for the delay, work is busy. I did some searching and couldnt find a 6.5 barrel for a mod 70. The thread is different from the rest of the mauser family. It leaves the only choice being a custom made barrel from McGowen or a contoured blank from midway or brownells and have a gunsmith chamber and cut the receiver threads. Hope this helps.

Thats a tough question to answer. I dont cut up or modify complete military rifles. But if I find a stripped receiver or action, then I think its fair game.
