We are living in a society where uncertainties call the shots. No one knows if we shall still call ourselves Nigerians in 2023. This is where the contention lies, and not someone taking second or more wives. It's of no significant use to any sensible person. Nigerians must face reality, social media regardless. Let's just hope and pray that no coup d'etat happens on, or before 2023 elections. Truth be told, the society is calling for it considering the unspeakable horror currently happening in Nigeria. We know our military very well, when they step in they over stay their welcome, the records are there. As a nation we are in horrible situations that need urgent, and collective attention and solutions.

The narrative that a woman took another woman’s husband or vice-versa is a fallacy. If a spouse strays, they want to. If a woman leaves her husband for another man, she wants to move on. If a married man goes with another woman, he wants to go. We are humans and not commodities. No one takes anyone. Women need to stop fighting each other and face the men. They are the hunters. Quite a let down on our society when hearing people of social figures, particularly the men like Alibaba on the topic of polygamy speak grossly when people look up to them on the right paths. He began very well about polygamy being African tradition. He failed to add that men don't need many children to succeed. Men don't die the war any longer. Rather men are dying early as a result of an unhealthy marriage. Like one of the ladies said, no woman will approve of polygamy in 2022. That's the evolution that makes it so different and a worry. The men might be out of control at first, women take over later in the marriage and are very vindictive later time; the children take the side of their mother as the weaker person in the marriage. Polygamy doesn't favour men anymore.

I’m my opinion, it’s not a question of polygamy. Polygamy is used to describe a lack of self-control in men. It is a term to disguise weakness in men toward the opposite sex. After all men marry men these days yet we are yet to see a harem of men under a household. Why is that? So it proves that men can remain married to a single spouse. This view was one sided am sorry to say. There is no justification for bad behavior. If a man is a traditionalist, he should declare it from day one. Let whoever you are in a relationship with know your values and your truth so as to allow them to choose to be with you or not to be with you. As a Clinical Psychologist and a professional Relationship Psychotherapist, I would suggest that people should be careful with the way we talk about people’s relationship. Most couple might be going through so much physical, emotional abuse in their relationship which happen behind closed doors yet, not able to speak up. Yul may have done what he did based on some personal experiences in his marriage. In as much as I’m not taking sides, at same time, I don’t want to be judgmental. A lot of men are dying in silence in their marriages/relationships. I support the ‘’male victims of domestic abuse’’ and I hear a lot of painful stories on daily bases. A question to be asked again is that, why will Yul get a second wife without discussing with the first wife? Have things been going alright in the marriage? If polygamy is natural, God is very intelligent, he wouldn't have created human being to be jealous type. Even God doesn't want to share you with any other gods. You are a man, you don't want to share your wife with any other man, why do you think a woman wants to share her husband. When it comes to jealousy both genders feel same but women's feelings are suppressed in our society. She will never feel the same way in the polygamous relationship. If she stays, it's to fulfil the society's need but not her. Life is short if you have your children and you are in a polygamous relationship and you are not happy, leave. Because there will always be jealousy, fighting for the attention and love of the man. Give other man a chance, someone who value, love and respect you as a human being not a property.

It is indeed more difficult for parents today than ever before. It's been said, you need a license to drive a car, but just anybody can go ahead and be a parent. No training or preparedness required, and the truth is that most folks don't think to prepare themselves for it (not that one really ever can be until they are), so it hits hard sometimes, and the confusion and panic can set in. Let's leave out those who just have children and then hand their upbringing out to caregivers of all sorts. I'd say, start parenting from the beginning. An infant recognizes the tone of your voice and you can groom a child to understand instruction easily that way so that as they grow, it's easier to communicate. Another thing we did was to ensure that we had a dining table that was not just a decoration. Maybe we don't have breakfast together, but dinner we always had with everyone at the table, including any house guests. If you are a faith based person, spend time sharing that with them. Let them understand what you believe and why, not just drag them along. Not forgetting we were all once children also helps and most especially, whilst being the parent, being friends with our children, letting them know that we love them unconditionally and that we are that best friend that you can tell anything and everything. Not judging them, but guiding. Helping them to be the very best "them" they can be, supporting them and realizing that whilst infants depend on adults for every single thing, (what they eat, what they wear, who their friends are, where they go and so much more) as a child grows, that dependency diminishes as individuality takes over. Respect that, know when to let go of what. Don't give commands, explain things especially when you say - don't or do this. There's a why in the child’s head, even if they don't ask, so let them know at the same time.

When people say Monogamy is not our story. Do you think it’s actually mathematically possible for even half of the men to have more than 1 wife without having child marriages? Africans! We’ve done many harmful things to ourselves. Our continent was blessed with resources, but it’s people are not, it’s why we are the richest continent yet plagued with the most dangerous diseases (malaria, AIDS), violence, destruction. We Africans used to traditionally castrate women and call it circumcision, and we wonder why our own practices never moved us forward??? Our men were so weak that even with all their wives, they couldn’t advance our continent? Who taught us how to build cars? Trains? Computers? Oh yes- the monogamous white man, with 1 wife. Yet some man comes with multiple wives and calls himself a man, what have African men accomplished to deserve multiple wives?

As per parenting, it is not a one size fits all. You may have 3 children, guide or discipline them the same way and they turn out differently. The only sure way is to teach them the word of God from early days, bond with them and keep praying for them especially when they are asleep.

I don't support this opinion my late grand father married just m my grand mother and he was a great farmer with different types of large farms including cocoa so I don't believe that farming was the reason for marrying many wives.

It’s sad that these women on the panel can only see it from a western perspective and refuse to even acknowledge a beautiful story of African polygamy. All of their arguments come from a selfish perspective. Polygamy is a better marital system than monogamy. And most women in a polygamist systems do not want to change it. These misguided western views are leading to women dying alone, and becoming stress on their children. White people in the west are running towards polygamy, while we’re trying to lose our advantage in Africa, unbelievable.
