Here's my take on the upcoming RSD / Record Store Day release of Yusef Lateerf's Atlantis Lullaby. It's being put out by Elemental Music and is a 2xLP release of some concert tapes recorded in Avignon, France. This is the first time the music has been available.

"Transfer" is the short term for "digital transfer." In audiophile labels today, they avoid using "digital" essentially to deceive analogue purists who may not be familiar with the term "transfer." When a record is purely analogue, it is proudly labelled as "AAA," "All-analogue," or described as "Remastered or cut directly from the original analogue tapes" - that "directly" is important. If the term "directly" is omitted, there's a 99.99% probability of digital step. So if you see "Remastered from the analogue tapes," it likely means there is a digital step.

Listened to it this morning. Very, very good.If you have interest in any of the artists involved then this is a worthwhile purchase. I must emphasize that the work of Kenny Barron on this album is extraordinary !

If I'm not mistaken, that Yusef concert was filmed? It's on KZfaq. The name is "In The Evening."

Great that you expanded on this release. I got promos for most of what's coming, and was most excited about this. I guess riding off the high of discovering Eastern Sounds, I was expecting something different and felt some disappointment. Sound quality was ok. I'm glad you spoke about everything in depth for those that might want to take a chance on it. Great job. Scott

Hi, great review, thanks, I'll try to grab one. The reason for the Stereo-mono issue might be that the recording was originally meant to be broadcast on the radio thus the mono (or close to mono) mix. INA is the french broadcast archival service, I guess recording was done by 'ORTF' thus french national radio at that time. Soundwise, ORTF recordings are - most of the time - very good. I think it’s great that you and other You Tubers have received “reviewer” copies, thereby sparing you the cost of purchasing these releases but for most of us it’s an expensive proposition, easily costing north of $500, which is just absurd, not to mention there may be non jazz releases some of us wish to purchase. Where available, I will be purchasing the cd equivalent, except perhaps in the case of the Tatum release.

Thanks for doing this. The choices for RSD are hard to make, and you can't get them all! Just wondering, have you narrowed your decision on what new turntable you will get?

Definitely narrowed. I had been considering a Rega P6 for the longest time but lately, and because some of the auctions did better than I expected, I may be leaning toward a Luxman PD-151. Planning to make a video discussing at least my top 3-4 turntables I had been considering
