YXZ Blown Front Diff | Teardown and Removal

Unfortunately the front diff broke a few spider gears and shot them through the case on the 2016 yxz1000r on our trip to brimstone atv park. Its a bummer, but its part of riding them like we do. We have a little teardown and demonstration on how the diff and 4wd works on these machines. hope you guys enjoy.
Machine details:
Justins machine is a 2016 yxz1000r with full weller exhaust, tune, weller tie rods, weller steering box, 70/30 gear reduction, heavy flywheel, 30" maxxis carnivores, 14x8 4+4 DWT Starfighter wheels, cage wrx super shorty cage, Yamaha front and rear bumper with spare tire carrier, and warn 3000lb winch.
Billys machine is a 2017 yxz 1000r with graves exhaust, tune, 70/30 gytr gear reduction, heavy flywheel, 30" maxxis carnivores, 14x7 5+2 Method 401 wheels, weller tie rods, krash offroad cage, bumpers,
sliders, warn 3500lb winch, and simpson suspension seats.
Joshs rig is a 2017 yxz1000r with graves exhaust, tune, 30" maxxis Roxxzilla tires, krash offroad cage, rear bumper, sliders, 70/30 gear reduction, and heavy flywheel.

Thanks man. Yeah I never really seen much about them breaking either until I broke one and looked into and it seems to be fairly common haha

Windowed the diff, hahaha. The old school poor man's locker! Did the same thing back in the day with my Jeep's front diff for the heck of it. Nice bounty hills.

Regular 4 wheel drive is like an open carrier in a truck doing burn outs is extremely hard on spider gears if you use diff lock all the time you should have more longevity great video guys have a great day be safe.

The way this locker works it sends all the power from the ring gear through the spider gears to the far axle when locked. A traditional truck locker usually eliminate the spiders & both sides are driven by the whole carrier & cross pin, where these lock everything on one side so if the far side axle gets a shock it all goes through the spiders. When in regular 4wd it allows the spiders to spin & absorb the shock. If that makes any sense.

I just got a YXZ XTR and was wondering if the least stress was in 4wd diff lock or just 4wd open. Its looking like you answered my question, keep the YXZ in open 4wd when possible to minimize spider gear stress. Thank You Sir!

My front diff has a pretty good leak coming from between the pinion and the yoke (not the pinion seal). Any idea what could be causing the leak?

My buddy’s wolverine diff did the same thing with his wolverine rspec last year he hit the throttle in reverse and it wasn’t fully engaged and blowed a spider gear tooth threw the case we welded the whole up in the case and luckily his old rhino he had before the spider gears was the same and we put them in and it’s still going strong today lol

That’s awesome lol we plan on welding this one up and throw some jb weld on the holes in this diff and use it as a secondary spare haha

Don't think you could repair the spiders in your carrier? Doesn't look near as bad as the first one.

We haven’t found anyone that offers just the spiders. So the carrier with the spiders is 450$ we’re getting complete full diffs for 500 used so not really worth it yet

That rearend Y'all pulled out isn't destroyed, oh no it's a new design the holes are for air cooling and for ease of cleaning the gears after a dusty ride. And all the scaring that people would think happened is the new self boring kit for when it's time for larger gears. Lol. I am truly sorry about your miss fortune, but thought I'd give a lil light side humor to it

I only now this from wrecking lots of shit and learning the hard way i drag race a 10 second nova dont worry you will always find the weak link parts break in strange places.

The spider gears just aren’t strong enough is what we’re reading and they break, and then the ring gear shoots the spider pieces out the case. Obviously we’re hard on the diff so we’re gonna find a lot of issues with the machine lol

The red Jeep is a wraith actually with a scx10 body lol and the black dodge is a scx10. Billy’s red truck is the traxxas one on portals and then he has a bomber in the background

We call them Castle Cremations in the RC helicopter community. lol I still use them though. Good ESCs even if a few burn down. I even have Castle ESCs in my Axial RC crawlers.

All three off us run the castle systems in our 2.2 rigs and they have been great no issues yet lol
