Great vid! I own 2 YZ250, a 2000 and a 2002. Love both bikes. This isn’t the only way to do a trail build. I’ve had both my favorite bikes cylinders modified for a better low end power delivery through Eric Gore. He tuned the cylinders for a better more smooth power delivery. Yes gearing from a 250x most certainly is flawless but you don’t absolutely need it. I love my 2 YZ250s, trails are all I do. I’m 58 years old and the YZ is my absolute bike. I’ve been offered a KTM here and there and they most certainly have the luxury of an electric start, a plush suspension, and stuff that would make a dirt bike take to The moon! I really don’t need any of it. The YZ is my favorite. I own 7 dirt bikes. 3 YZ125s, 2 YZ250s, an 03 RM250 trail modded, and a 03 CR500AF from an 03 blow to crap CRF450! All bikes are 2 strokes because when you really do know the science, for all around riding and not ALL racing the 2 stroke will take you very far from home with an absolute reliability, so long you know your bike and the maintenance of it. The Euro bikes are fantastic, I find them to make me lazy. I don’t want one.

Eric Gorr was a bit of a prick to me on the phone years ago, (and was partly responsible for a broken cylinder that he modified),--so I modify my own engines (do it for a living). if you want very good low end power, try this. 1) FMF Gnarley pipe: (I would like to try the stock 250x pipe, as it is a lower rpm target pipe also.). 2) V-vorce reeds with no aluminum spacer: The stock reed stop plate blocks off the 5th transfer port tunnel about 50%, and the v-force reeds open earlier for more low end power. No spacer tightenes up the primary compression a bit, for a better hit. 3) Lower the cylinder by not using a cylinder base gasket, (must use a good sealer if you don't want any leaks, (3M 847 Nitrile high performance rubber and gasket adhesive" is awesome stuff for that job.). The lower cylinder lowers the exhaust port timing to better match the lower rpm pipe, and that is where the best power gains are made, (pipe matching the porting). The squish clearance is till about .048" (.040 is about the limit for a 250cc MX bike), and the higher compression will need 100 octane fuel. Strong off the bottom, can short shift with no clutch, and not fall on it's face (190 lbs and stock gearing). Not too abrupt though, just powerful and smooth. I don't think I need a flywheel weight. No charge.

The lower rpm pipe, that I don't see here, will probably gain more lower rpm power than all the other engine mods combined. Porting and pipe are the 2 biggest factors in power generation, especially if they are matched up well (port and pipe peak power rpm target.).

Hello there Love your Channel much and this is my best bike build yet coz I had the same issues few years back were I had bought a 2015 YZ-250 and Built a it up to a Enduro Race bike...I did it coz I was Not riding MX and Loved Enduro riding and Yamaha bikes💪😎 I have Raced YZ all my life growing up so that's Y sticking to YZ and not KTM or such bike that's already Enduro bike. But coming back to the point... You still need A Very Important part in this build and that's n "Weighded Flywheel" ... This is to Cary the Torque through at low Rmp's especially on the Technical climb sections...al was done om my YZ to be the X but I didn't do the flywheel and boy did I Struggle a lot on the Rocky Climbing sections! The bike kept on stalling🙈🙉 Ow and also get Radiator Guards and Electric fans it's a Big Must have!! hope this info helps a bit to get that done as well... Keep up the builds its Awesome 😁👌🏻✊🏻

This build sounds like what I did in the early '80's......I had a YZ 465 that was in perfect condition.....trouble was that on the rough, tight trails it was killing me with too instant power and suspension. I answered an ad in the newspaper for a used 465 IT. When I got there I found it to be in good shape(blown clutch) and bought for $300. I swapped engines/trans, the shock and forks when I needed to use it on the tight/slow going. With the wide-ratio trans and IT barrel/pipe it was tamed considerably and made a really good compromise. I also took head to machinist to tame the IT even more and make it less picky for gas quality. By swapping parts I could virtually make the YZ anything I wanted it to be.....just time and effort. I used White Bros longer clutch arm to ease the pull at the lever. Hang in there. Too bad they don't still make the big 2-strokes both enduro and YZ.

@@xterrential Sounds great! Yup....the '81 YZ had better forks but a tad bit tamer engine. If your friend has trouble with detonation there are head mods to increase squish that really help. Guys used to take the '80 engine and put into '81 frame or simply get triple clamps/forks for their '80. Those big YZ came on like a 125 if you got whiskey throttle.....saw God a couple of times riding in the mountains.....
@tomnekuda3818
@tomnekuda3818 4 жыл бұрын
@@dirtniron It was a nice ride....many times I was sorry that I sold it but as a fella gets older his bones don't distort like they used to do. With the IT cylinder you could "sneak up" on the power more and the wide-ratio trans was wonderful. I did some squish band mods on head that really helped. I'm 73 now and need a few parts(on me) to be able to continue riding. I put organ donor on my license but I don't think they'd find much they could use! No lie. Really enjoy your projects and envy the riding terrain that you have out there. Is that California? Keep the Faith, young fella.

@@dirtniron I'm interested to see what porting mods you come up with. I have a 2002 yz250 2 stroke and I put a 13 ounce flywheel weight on it that drastically improved it's off road ability. However, with the 13 oz fww you have to bend the clutch actuator arm for clearance which wears out the cable quickly, so I would recommend not going bigger than an 11 once weight should you go that route. I did not find the stock YZ250 to have hared hitting power. Soft on the bottom, almost OK in the mid-range, then smooth but pretty good acceleration to the top in an effort to keep up with a 450 on a MX track. It was probably the smoothest (and maybe the slowest), 250 MX bike I ever owned, but I fixed that. Try a 97 KX250. :)

I'm curious if you'll like the X ECU once you get this thing running or whether you'll throw in the YZ stocker back in 🤔. Anyway, hurry up on the videos my man! Also your production quality is... well... I'm pretty sure youre well on your way to take the Dirt Bike build genre pole-position.

thats a great encouragement Mike! glad you like the plans for my build, I will be checking your yz250 as well, you are way faster than me ;) trying to improve my video production step by step, glad you notice the changes. There are many channels with the builds these days, they do great job with builds and vids as well, good motivation for me, thats for sure ;)

Just install the power valve governor spring out of a yz250x before anything else. $8 from Yamaha and it totally changed the power delivery of the engine. It may be all you want to do

Dustin Jean Agreed everything is very similar except for the aluminum frame... which should make some difference, no?
@dustinjean8096
@dustinjean8096 4 жыл бұрын
Ankit Parikh ya the aluminum frame and the front forks are different to I believe, few mil bigger. The aluminum frame is stiffer which is better for motocross because it’s stronger more consistent feel on a track that’s why most new motocross bikes are aluminum frame however stiffer means it will vibrate more. Pretty sure that’s why euro enduros are all steel framed for more comfort in off-road, motocross needs the strength for jumping. So what’s better depends on what you like to ride. If you are a trail rider I would keep the steel frame, you want a better Moto bike I would look for the aluminum frame version.

Dustin Jean I’ve been riding motocross lately... so I just got this 2004 yz 125 and it seems like finding a 2005 yz 125 around Utah-Florida that I could affordably get would be hard... but not impossible. Idk if I should hope and hunt or just change the frame/shocks...? What do you think?
@dustinjean8096
@dustinjean8096 4 жыл бұрын
Ankit Parikh I don’t think the frame and suspension is night and day better than the 04 but it is still better. Depending how much and how comfortable you are with your current bike you might not even be able to feel the difference. However the 05 aluminum frame and suspension is basically what the new 2020s are so you would have the latest and greatest. You could also save the money and have a professional revalve your suspension like race tech and that would be better then stock 05 suspension. I think you have to be a pro to really benefit from the aluminum frame itself but it does look cooler and it is the most updated frame they made for the Yamaha’s 2 strokes

Sweet build Rado. Can't wait to watch build series...😀 It is going to be a sweet ripper, but to be honest I doubt that you can make it as good or better than 20' 250x... I am sure they have done some improvements in the swingarm, brakes, suspension(although I know that yours is yet to be rebuild) etc... Those are the small differences that make a big difference in a "long run".... Hard to believe but thing as small as slightly different angle of front suspension in the frame can make a "night and day" difference. I am not saying that they redesigned the frame, since I am not sure, but you get the point 🙂🙂🙂 I know that yz and yz"x" frame is the same and we all have heard that yz frame haven't changed for a long time, but do you think they really haven't changed? I doubt that. However I am not critising you... That's just my point of view🙂🙂🙂 Cheers from Slovakia

thanks bro, I like to set challenging goals, it pushes me to go further and work harder ;) they did not change much, with good suspension tuning, engine porting, oversized brakes and steel braided lines, etc.. we should be able to get somewhere ;)

Yes the gearing sukks for tje track..3rd is to short to much pep for fast jumps while 4th has no punch and is to long for regular tracks ..gearing down helps.a bit..the transmissionis a very weak point. I bent my shift fork 3rd gear needed replaced although it did not slip it caused 5th to not fully engage .because 3rd is short and 4th is long it puts alotta pressure on gear assemblys..bad design
