Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き o-konomi-yaki?) is a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning "what you like" or "what you want", and yaki meaning "grilled" or "cooked" (cf. yakitori and yakisoba). Okonomiyaki is mainly associated with Kansai or Hiroshima areas of Japan, but is widely available throughout the country. Toppings and batters tend to vary according to region. Tokyo okonomiyaki is usually smaller than a Hiroshima or Kansai okonomiyaki.

I love this comment, thanks for your criticism surrounded by compliments. I'll keep it in mind the next time I make a video, and make sure I include a wider range of shots. :) I guess the problem this time was that I was sitting right across from Ryuhei and he has been very clear that he is NOT okay with having his face online anymore, so it would have had to have been him shooting me, I guess. I'll work on making it happen though, so thank you. :)

when I was at school and lunch time came we would run to the street ,and a okonomiyaki vender came,I thank it cost 50cents American.this was out side Tokyo 1956........love. I took my two daughters and grandkids out to eat some,not a good idear..but it was here in the states..

I had Hiroshimayaki when I was in Hiroshima last week. Just a basic one with the crepe bottom, veggies, ham and egg on top. It was so yummy and huge!

Cabbage, steak, mushrooms, and green peppers make for a very simple yet delicious okonomiyaki. Definitely try it out.

It's not on the same level of popularity as sushi, but many westerners seem to know it. When I introduced Mentai Monja Jagarico, many people were asking what the difference was between Monjayaki and Okonomiyaki.

I love Okonomiyaki!! Im 16 and i have been in japan for about 4 months and will leave next year. The first meal I had with my host family was Oknomiyaki and we have it all the time.

Takashi and I was walking through the back streets of Kyoto when we happened upon a okonomiyaki shop in someone's kitchen! We were curious and went in. Very small space and the friendly couple offered us a seat and we had our food made in front of us. It was very delicious and I hope I can eat there again someday :)

The first time I had okonomiyaki was at a Japanese restaurant in Vancouver. the most interesting thing about it were the onion flakes that would dance about as the pancake cooled down.

Actually, most people speak relatively the same way. The only places you'll find people with really heavy dialects are like, in the middle of the forest. Elderly people tend to speak with heavy accents too sometimes, but not everyone. Most people will speak clearly if talking to a foreigner anyway.

I made okonomiyaki for my Japanese class :] I put cabbage, eggs, grilled chicken, onions, and lots of other herbs and I topped it off with hoisen sauce and dilluted mayonaise :]

I can make it at home, it's easy but I make mine with prawn/shrimp, cabbage, bacon.. I keep it simple and i do love Ao nori and katsuoboshi. never have it without that!

Yes, had okonomiyaki, don't know exactly what was in there, the chef at teppanyaki throw in almost everithing and covered all with sweet-sour sauces... it was nice

That looks SO GOOD. I've seen a few different ways people make okonomiyaki. I think it looks good with cabbage and octopus and onions... mmmm. I need to get myself over there and just eat some already!

Thanks for your comment, and I hope you enjoy Fukuoka. I have to suggest though, that you look for a restaurant online. For example, Tabelog is a very popular food ranking website in Japan. Searching "Fukuoka, Okonomiyaki" in google brings up Tabelog as a top result. I live in Fukuoka Prefecture, not the city, and this restaurant is not easily accessible without a car. Furthermore, it's not that great. I'm confident that there are better places for Okonomiyaki in Fukuoka City. Good luck! :)

Just had it yesterday in a local japanese restaurant. I suppose they do the classic recipe (cabbage, okonomiyaki flour, eggs, some pork, with okonomi sauce, mayonnaise and bonito flakes on top. We have only one restaurant in our whole country that makes okonomiyaki.

The first time I heard of it was in Azumanga Daioh. It often shows up in high school stories during cultural festival when the kids turn the class room into a little restaurant, sometimes serving okonomiyaki (and other teppanyaki things). The problem might be with translation though. Food sometimes gets translated into some English non-equivalent. For instance, they might call it pizza, or pancakes.

okonmiyaki is the first japanese dish I ever heard of (apart from sushi obviously) when I first became interested in Japan I youtubed tonssss of videos of people making it! I'm yet to try it, but there's a food chain in london called wasabi and in morning hours they sell okonomiyaki on a stick!

Wah, okonomiyaki! :D It's quite hard finding okonomiyaki here in the US but I finally got to try some in Epcot in a Japanese restaurant on vacation! The sauce on it was so good! I think that was the most veggies I'd eaten in my whole life though xD I'm really enjoying all your videos so far! Can't wait to see more and see new and interesting things about Japan :D

I am pretty sure there are plenty of places to eat Okonomiyaki in Tokyo aside from this restaurant chain. :P Just search Okonomiyaki on Tabelog and it should bring up a list of the best restaurants, reviews, and menus. (Assuming you can speak Japanese)

i ate okonomiyaki in two different cities! once in hiroshima and once in kyoto. the one in hiroshima was different. it was like two crepes with layers of ingredients inside. that had a bunch of fish and beef in it i think. the one in kyoto was more like a pancake. i got the "italian" flavor although it didn't taste very italian at all. japan has weird flavor concepts sometimes.

I had okonomiyaki a few weeks ago somewhere in Shinjuku I think. It wasn't until a couple days ago that I realized that there's an okonomiyaki place down the street from where I'm staying. I guess I would have known that if I actually read.
