Z31 300ZX Replacing seals, water pump and an opossum

In this video, we replace the camshaft seals, remove the water pump and remove the old hood struts in the 1986 300ZX. We also encounter our old friend, the opossum who thinks the Z31 is it's home.

The possum is still there lol...i just started working on my z just last month with my buddy too...keep it up guys working on the Z 👍👍👍

Yup those hood struts made me scratch my head too 10 or so years ago. Still has them old ones and they kinda hold when its warm enough.

I’ve been sweating changing the belts on my ‘86. I don’t have to battle a opossum every time I open the hood, so I’m feeling a little more confident. 😅 Eagerly awaiting the next update.

Hopefully we finish the timing belt and water pump the next time. We are about to start working on it again. The weather is starting to allow that.😉

Just found your videos on your ‘86 Z31 very enjoyable. I had just started training in the Canadian Air Force when I bought a 1985 burgundy, 5-speed base model brand new and even though it was under powered I really enjoyed that car. Wish I had your level of skill as that, well except for the opossum, looks like fun. Side note, two years after I bought that Z I traded it plus cash cash for a 1968 Shelby GT500KR (before prices when crazy lol), which I sadly sold 9 years later when I got married 😢. Keep up the good work, looking forward to your next Z video. 😀

You have had some awesome cars. I still have never driven a Z31. I can't wait to get this one back on the road. Brad and I live in different towns and the car is not in either of those towns. So, matching our schedules is fun. But, we will eventually get it going. Thanks for checking us out!

Well it took a while to find some pictures of my ‘85 300ZX cause they were actual pictures lol but when my OCD kicked in it wasn’t long until they turned up. These were taken in the summer of ‘87 as I was posted and the Z was being shipped so I took these in case of damage. So the Z was still only 2 years old, everything worked, engine bay was clean, even the cloth seats weren’t too bad. Could only afford pie plates on the steel wheels but thought they looked ok, didn’t come with cruise so I added that and sadly it had no AC lol. Btw i also worked on recently the crank gear it is sure hell won't budge when you try to pry them..i've read and done what the z31 groups in the fb and did drilled two holes in the gear... making a thread on it then use a puller with a threaded bolt to pull that subborn gear off!

Awaiting next update on this. If this is like other Nissan Z's & S chassis's, the notch on the end of the crank is called a Woodruff key. Push the pulley back where is was and remove that first. Then the pulley should slide forward 👍🏻

I've had a little bit of luck with the Haveaheart pellets with possums under my house. Also fox urine has worked well for me before. I'm about to be doing the same things y'all are on the same kind of car. So I'm watching.

Just bought a 84 z31 and was looking into the fuel injector recall, which do you recommend to use as replacements to the factory ones?

I have not looked into that too deeply yet. With ours, I suspect we will have other issues too. But, we will be doing it soon. I will keep you posted. If you beat us too it, let us know what you go with.

It will have to be warm enough, dry enough and our schedules have to match up. (It has snowed the last 3 weekends) It's hard to for those things to fit. But, a new video will come eventually. We are also discussing moving it.
