@michaeln3044

This isn’t correct. This is what artists have convinced you is the case. The truth Ticketmaster has utilized dynamic pricing to maximize pain point for consumers having nothing to do with resale market. They keep prices as high as humanly possible for initial purchase because they know if it falls apart they can lower them to a level they need to to address the market or if it sustains keep them high. This flexibility makes it so they don’t have to estimate what is actually affordable. Instead they can concentrate on target numbers. The truth is the resale market usually fixes these things. Often at prices lower than tm itself. But it also does several other important things. It makes ur favorite artist viable. As much as u love to believe most artists crush box offices, it’s just not true. The majority of concerts would fail miserably without some of the resale market driving enthusiasm and ticket sales. Secondly ur favorite artist signs contracts that make seats premium to make money. They need them bought to keep touring as the most profitable aspect of musicianship currently. Bigger artists are of course fine but you’d be surprised how small a number bigger artists comprises. The market heat resale generates and the scarcity factor created makes a show a hot ticket. The fact is all components of the free market work in tandem to give the best experience. Ur 500 is charged whether the resale exists or not if fans will pay 500. Stop falling for artists nonsense about the market being driven up by such. It begins and ends with the manipulations of contracts and the ticket company itself.
@michaeln3044
@michaeln3044 9 ай бұрын
The fix is relatively simple. Kill dynamic pricing. Force Ticketmaster to accurately assess an artists value and don’t give them the loophole of adjusting on the fly. They will set more reasonable pricing and that will filter through the entire ticketing market. If they choose to set it to high that concert will fail and hurt their bottom line. If they have to assess with profitability in mind we will get cleaner more respectable prices across the board. Relegate to the primary ticket companies only and the resale market will become equally more reasonable as a result.

Musicians aren't getting their money from record sales this day and age. Their greatest source of income is touring now. Bands back then could afford to do $20 concerts because they were selling millions of albums. Truth is streaming music is nowhere near as profitable as a record being sold or touring now. It would lose its intimacy. Guy in video mentions you should be able to mow a few yards and be able to cover ticket price. Even at 300 for a ticket, with the price of landscaping these days that’s still pretty easily obtained.

The problem is a huge percentage of the money you pay won’t even go to Zach Bryan. A lot of it goes to distributors like Ticketmaster. Most artists are reasonable and won’t charge tickets their fans couldn’t afford but with the middle man, they don’t really have control over that. The fact that a Taylor Swift concert costs a couple thousand dollars is absurd. In the 90s, a Madonna ticket costs $70 and a Nirvana ticket costs $25. Even with inflation, that doesn’t make sense regardless.

Ticketmaster and others add a lot of BS fees but I am annoyed when friends complain about a larger show being over $100. All the staff, travel, lighting, sound that goes into it and getting 2+ hours of entertainment. Plus 99% of musicians are making very little off record sales from streaming. So they rely on the concert sales.
@zedmelon
@zedmelon 11 ай бұрын
Here's one musician/songwriter's perspective: Generally, there's more revenue for an established act through touring (and tour merch) than via record sales. My understanding is that the complexity in digital streaming has widened this gap, but there are probably thresholds where it changes somewhat--like for huge artists like Beyonce and Taylor Swift. If someone prefers to spend more time with their family and less on the road, that's their prerogative. As long as they can afford to survive on the revenue from streaming residuals and limited touring, that should be their choice. A popular artist should not need to apologize for being in demand and having strong bargaining leverage for (a) higher ticket prices, (b) fewer show dates, or (c) not even touring in support of an album. HOWEVER, every artist must remain cognizant of what a malleable industry this can be, and they must accept the end result of bypassing the chance to embark on a lucrative tour--because to paraphrase Cody Johnson: _If you've got a fan take it_ _cause tomorrow they may not show_

Back in the day you could only go see a concert if you wanted to camp in line at the venue's ticket window and that's only if it was in your city. If it was out of town you had to take time off work or away from school to drive there, camp out for 1-2 days, hope by the time you get up there there's still some decent tickets left, then drive back. I don't like the ticket prices, either, but I'm thankful I can get online and buy tickets to see anyone anywhere. I grew up in the era of the greatest bands of all time and didn't get to see any of them because they didn't come where I lived. These days I go to concerts all over the country.

We used to go to tower to get our tickets for whatever we were going to go see I think this day and age either Ticketmaster needs to get with the program or the venues need to cut out middlemen like Ticketmaster and put it more in the hands of the artist. In the 90's I saw Metallica and GnrmR together at Reunion Arena in Dallas. I paid $55. I still have the stub. And my father thought I was crazy for spending that much of his money on a ticket. In the early 00's my wife and I saw Billy Joel & Elton John Back2Back show for $88 a ticket for platinum tickets at American Airlines. Granted online wasn't a thing yet for tickets to become a scalper's paradise. Recently I wanted to take my son to a Metallica concert at AT&T stadium, but the best deal I could get was $2,000 with fees for two tickets in nosebleeds, and I refused to do it. That didn't include parking which would've started at $150. Many say music streaming is to blame for this. But I bet if we solely relied on physical media like we used to, prices would still be outrageous. It's sad, because I would've loved to have had that moment with my son at a Metallica concert. My first concert was in the early 80s - my sister took me to a Joan Jett show. A week later I was seeing Pink Floyd with flying pigs in the arena. Her boyfriend sold drugs in the early 80s and he had access to incredible tickets: Ozzy Osbourne, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Iron Maiden. I can't even begin to remember all the concerts I've been to and the crazy beautiful memories that accompany each one. And I can't get one with my son. I mean I could, I'm not complaining like that, but $2,000 for Metallica is insane! I do love the band with all my heart tho.

Sounds like he wants to make people happy, but at the same time getting defensive about his ticket prices. I know he could do these shows cheaper because I’ve been to these megastar concerts before where they get liquor sponsorships and other brands to help sponsor to offset ticket prices to $20-$100(depending on the seat). These companies then get to put branding and advertising everywhere and sell their products there. It’s not hard to get that to happen when you’re as big as he is. It just requires a little extra work not related to music specifically. ZB could definitely have his team figure it out if he wanted to.

Here is oklahoma, WHERE HE IS FROM concert tickets not in the massive venues only run about $30-$75 so the fact he says he'd rather play small shows for $150 is fucking wild because I've seen Panic at the Disco, Foster the People, Twenty One Pilots, Weezer and Modest Mouse, Vampire Weekend, and so many more for under $100 that are way bigger names than him here in Tulsa.

I remember back in the mid 90's when you could get concert tickets for $40-$80, how ticketmaster has existed this long without being absolutely mogged for being disgusting opportunists, I'll never know.

It went and saw some of the best bands in Detroit for like less than $50 for years. I get the prices have gone up because of the economy. I miss the old days.

Those 18-25 songs have a big price tag attached beyond 10% of someone’s income. Beyond the artist/band, all support for the road, venue costs and associated support, etc. Those are all real. When people don’t want to pay artisanal prices, they are saying artists aren’t worth it. But that sound guy? The light guy? The bus driver? They all are artists in their own right. They also have income needs and families, and it’s not necessarily stable employment either. They are the ones who facilitate the tip of that tour’s spear. When people think of fair prices, they often subconsciously don’t even consider the support and logistics costs of touring. It’s also a want for the audience but a need for the employees. And I guarantee the market is in the employees’ favor due to more want than the producers can provide. It’s a rough, hard life on tour. With so much time on the road their safety factor is skewed and the very baseline of the job is more dangerous than one might think. They’re out there busting their asses with bad sleep, crappy food, and generally improper living conditions so people can “touch” the music. If they want to touch the music, that’s great. But they could at least uncurl their fists first and think about the reality of their requests to others to lower their own value, so that they can used for a night, every night for as long as the tour is.
