It's so different experiencing this song out of the musical's context; there, you have just gotten your heart ripped off, and you're feeling all sorts of emotions when this starts. Here, however, we can appreciate how heart-wrenching the song itself is. Great, now I'm crying.

In the show, one of them has already died and one has contracted HIV (which was essentially a death sentence), so the line is saying that the two will never have the chance to grow old/"age well"
