How important is science fiction? On this episode of, we’re diving into the world of Star Trek and science fiction. Neil deGrasse Tyson beams up to the USS Enterprise to chat with Spock himself, Zachary Quinto. Back on base, Neil is joined by comic co-host Chuck Nice and astrophysicist and StarTalk geek-in-chief Charles Liu, PhD.
You’ll learn about Zachary’s classical theatre background. We explore the Shakespearean themes found in Star Trek and why science fiction in general is a perfect canvas for the themes and drama of Shakespeare. Find out more about Zachary’s role in Heroes and In Search of… You’ll also find out why shows work best when they “stick to their own rules.” We discuss why Heroes ultimately lost its audience due to “retroactive continuity.” We explore retconning even further as Neil brings up the Kessel Run from Star Wars.
Then it’s time for Star Trek. Zachary tells us how he felt about taking on one of the most iconic roles in all of science fiction. You’ll hear about his close relationship with Leonard Nimoy. We investigate Spock’s constant battle between his Vulcanism and his humanity. This leads to a bigger question: how do you separate emotions from logic? Or, do they work in tandem? Discover more about the relationship between Spock and Captain Kirk and why they serve as perfect foils to each other.
Lastly, you’ll learn about science fiction storytelling. We debate which element of storytelling science fiction should focus more on: telling morality tales or indulging in escapism. Charles explains why, when debating things like this, you must consider the medium in which the story is being told. All that, plus, Neil tells us why science fiction’s job is to illuminate the human condition.

Don't forget that Shatner, Plummer, and Stewart all had extensive backgrounds in Shakespearean theater. In fact, Shatner was Plummer's understudy in a production of Henry V back in Canada in the 1950s.

The overwhelming characteristic that identifies Spock, in my opinion, is not his ears, his mannerisms, nor any other aspect of his physical experience. What makes Spock recognizable is his adherence to thoughtful intelligence. Leonard had that as part of his off-screen persona, and so does Zachary. I was a devoted fan of the original series in the 60's, and Spock was my favourite character. and I find Zachary is a totally authentic reincarnation of Leonard's Spock.

That video with Zachary Quinto the digital editing was absolutely eye catching. Promoting/priming for Mars/space. The chr he played was awesome but nutz. Popped a though of Genetic Inheritance traits that have been passed on from the past let alone trying to open a persons mind to be able to probably access these latent dormant traits like that other % that is in the brain that we probably can't access or haven't opened up yet to remember. Emotions can most definitely interfere with things. That deep breath and breath... Balance I definitely agree with that. Yes I can agree with the morality yet their are somethings that need to change due to their extremities. Their are just some people that may need a bump in a direction yet their were a lot of things I've seen like things were set up for this moment in time due to what seems to be wanting to take place for a future of some sort. I like to create things through idea's if I can understand what it can do.

Somewhere around 29:20, ZQ talks about the decision to not-quite-reboot [my gloss] Star Trek as giving it infinite possibilities. Spot on. And I think it was a wonderful idea and really enjoyed the film (and, FWIW, successors). It might be said that Doctor Who did it earlier, and in a way that gives even more flexibility: not just an alternative version of the original but a totally different one (albeit with some connection to the original). I think both approaches have their merits, and I'm happy they are both ongoing.

I feel that Neil is spot on with his movie entertainment expectations. We shouldn't settle for a film with ether morality or escapism when there is so much potential for both. I think there are many other examples but the 2017 movie Valerian is a perfect example of seamlessly merging escapism and morality tail.

10:35 Heros: season 2, was interrupted by the writers strike of that time. Season one was great, and then the rest of the show was handed off to obviously untested writers. That early, no, it was circumstance, not a lack of ideas... P.S. judging by the amount of thought being put into very specific verbiage, I would venture to guess that nobody will talk openly about it. My assumption is that a non-disclosure agreement keeps them from doing so.
