Who am I:
My name is Zach. I’m a fourth-year medical student in Philadelphia. I make videos about medical school, studying, and growth. I love trying new things and often mess up. However, every time I screw up I usually learn something. Whatever I learn I post it either on KZfaq or on my website 🌐 (zhighley.com/).
I write a weekly newsletter 💌 (zhighley.com/newsletter/) linking the best things I read, watched, and listened to that week. Join the 3,000+ that read it every Sunday morning.

Summary: The video is about 17 productive things to do instead of watching TV during your free time. The speaker talks about how he started his KZfaq channel by writing scripts during his free time instead of watching TV. He believes that learning, writing, and reading are better ways to grow as a person than watching TV. The 17 productive things that the speaker suggests include taking an online class, creating a website or a KZfaq channel, practicing meditation, hiking, tidying up your place, cooking, volunteering, learning a new language, playing an instrument, practicing a new skill, journaling, practicing gratitude, spending time with loved ones, going to a museum or art exhibit, exploring new places, and exercising. The speaker also shares his favorite recipes for chicken stir-fry and vegetable curry.

I only watch tv closer to bedtime with my blue light filter glasses to reward myself for accomplishing my other goals. I love it. It's a great way to end your night if you watched something uplifting, inspirational, or hopeful (especially in the kind of world we live in sometimes where it's easy to be despondent or disheartened by unnecessary cruelty, hatred, and evil).

I agree. Watching something you love that's uplifting is a lovely way to spend some free time for a couple of hours after a goods day productivity. It's when you watch TV (and even worse negative stuff on TV) for non stop hours and hours. I grew up in a family environment where my parents did nothing but work and watch TV the rest of the time like zombies, even at weekends, nothing but TV in their waking hours. I looked at that and thought I never want to be that way so now I purposely limit time watching TV and look for other ways to spend my free time. I love nature so I always make sure I get into the woods as much as I can and listen to things like self growth podcasts and learning German. A little TV is ok but I would feel I wasted my life if I get to the end of my life and know that was all I did.
@hodasamadi7903
@hodasamadi7903 Жыл бұрын
@@greenkitty82 for sure! Everything in moderation, right? It easy to see that when you are younger but if your work is personally fulfilling to you or meaningful, it's often helpful to offset that sometimes and escape into tv. Reading a book can be better, as it isn't as arousal-inducing. Again, everything in balance! It's helpful to go on vacation, travel, become cultured etc..
@greenkitty82
@greenkitty82 Жыл бұрын
@@hodasamadi7903 yeah absolutely. Things can get stressful in life so whatever anyone personally feels relaxed and fulfilled doing they should do it - if i want to spend a couple of hours watching a good film i'm fulfilled by that and I will then go and do something else like listening to music, talking with others, swimming so i'm balancing everything out. You actually find you enjoy the TV show or film more when you arent spending lots of time in front of the screen. Selective viewing i call it - i could watch the TV for a couple of hours but id just get irritable after that and want to go do something else. Documentaries and films tend to be the thing i watch most on the TV as from docs im learning things that will benefit me later on.

great video! totally agree that we often end up coasting through life- i've been finding too many small pockets of time that i'll end up giving up to social media or whatever pops up on my phone. this is a good list to remind myself of other ways i can choose to spend my time. another list that helps me is to have a list of small bite sized tasks that contribute toward my big projects or goals- oftentimes i end up coasting because i'm not sure about my next steps, so having a list of concrete actions help me spend time more intentionally.

Honest, just laying down without something in my ears, just breathing outside looking at the sky. Relieves so much stress naturally, makes me more motivated to do stuff later, but appreciate the down time I have. I ain’t a machine, I have desires, but also I can get stressed and tired and need that rest. All that to say though, filling in time I would be watching something I know isn’t good for me I believe requires awareness of my activities, and time to evaluate what I want to do and be rn. Not because someone else tells me but because I want to be that. If you gotta hustle then you be you, but for others don’t let someone else’s hustle control you. Be with purpose.

I did the info dump way recently, it was amazing the effect it had on my sleep and my overall happiness. I literally ended up writing until I could not think of anything else it took me an hour and a half to run out of things to write. When I was finished I felt exhausted and had a much quicker time trying to sleep and I had a better overall sleep. The next day I woke up feeling lighter in my head, like I had actually cleared it out of the thoughts I didn't need in there. It is now something I find myself doing every night.

I enjoy doing most of these things already, I struggle with building a website and coding because I don’t like it, but I’m working on it. And I want to do better with journaling, meditating, and of course fitness goals. I love reading, I typically average about 70 books a year. However, I love tv too, it can be rewarding in different ways, especially if you’re not mindlessly watching whatever is in front of you. Working out and watching tv is a great combo.

I grew up watching too much tv and at 51 it's a HARD habit to break, but it's been gnawing away at me thinking that my life won't get any better watching tv for the sake of it. After several months, it occurred to me,...ask KZfaq. Just the inspo I need. So I watched this in between painting my front living room to convert into a home cinema. The plan is immersive sport and movies (weekend enjoyment) with vastly reduced week day tv time replaced by some of Zach's ideas, starting with the Banjo I bought and strummed just once! Thanks Zach

Absolutely a perfect video. Watching Tv and playing games in general is getting boring... for me atleast. But I occasionally do these things because that's all I know how to do. However this week I started to learn how to type with 10 fingers. I went from 40-60 WPM to 20WPM. But I have strong belief that with time I will go above 100 WPM. Which will improve my life in general. Just to be able to write at my thinking speed is a motivational boost for me. I have constantly ideas and thoughts that I believe are massive boost to my life and around me. But have not been able to get it down on pc or paper. I hope I am in a change for the better right now. I will start with this small thing and add another new hobby soon. Another comment that caught my eye was "We are not machines, but humans." That's true, but yet we can use our free time better. Which will result in better life, better shape and sharper mind. Depending on what we decide to do.

These are great ideas. Just remember, it's okay to not be productive 24/7. It's okay to take a break when you know your body needs it. One thing I will never go back to doing is watching tv shows and movies obsessively. I think back to when I spent time watching 3 seasons of a tv show and I can't remember a single thing that happened in that show. Now I can't sit down and focus on a tv show unless it's something that really interests me

That’s a lot of advice. Thanks for pointing out the possibilities. However, in the end it could be overwhelming as you come across as somebody who actually follow all those activities and more importantly, have time for them. Don’t get me wrong: every one of them is better than watching trash on TV. In the end I’d sum it up like this: be active, be creative. One thing is missing in your list, as these activities are somehow self-indulgent (in a good way): you could also participate in community events, in neighborhood projects or charity work. This way you help and get to know people, broadening your knowledge beyond self centered activities and doing good, which in the end can be very rewarding.

I was feeling contemplative these days and got to this video, I was missing a Hobby that add something to my life. When I was a kid I used to play acoustic guitar (from 9 to 12 years old) and thanks to this video I just bought a new Guitar after many years without playing and I am enjoying the JustinGuitar website you have referred here, can´t wait for my guitar to be delivered. Thank you for your content, I will be checking your future videos.

I think another important one is socializing/spending more time with friends, family or anyone close to you. This is something that I'm still not good at but I'm trying to improve on.

GREAT VIDEO! First I have seen from you but definitely not last!👏 Quite frankly I have to say you have an awesome voice and for me personally (non-english native) is your speech well understandable.😁🤓 I was only surprised you didn´t mention learning languages.😅

Since I saw one of your videos I have good plans about organising my life so thank you so much for that! Also (nothing about that) but I think you look a little bit like Semih Erturk a Turkish actor.

I advice to learn how to write keybord without looking at it:) It will speed up your writing for the whole life. Practice with a weapon to learn to protect yourself. How to draw a knife, how to swing with a bat, figure out how to protect your home etc. It may save your life and is fun:) Learn how to invest and manage your money. One step at a time. Start investing with small amount of money, learn how metal market work, how to speculate, what are the programs for retirement, what to invest in. After a year you will learn a lot at it may be the best investment of time you can do in your life. Learn how to cook, get some ideas, prepare some food in jars or to freeze.

Be productive but set an afternoon to just be entertained. I like to choose my just-for-fun podcasts, videos and films or tv shows at the beginning of the week to look forward to watching on Sunday. A rest and reward for another week of work.

As a person who likes video games, I've always interested what people do at evening everyday. Looks like this could be so huge problem when you don't have hobbies. And yeah, advises like “go to the classes after work” definetly great, but I don't think that it's what tour brain desire at the end of f**** working day 😅

The single most PRODUCTIVE hack I've found: Buy an old school iPod. I download podcasts that I want to learn about and put them on my iPod so that it has 0 connectivity to the outside world. This allows me to have an immersive environment of anything I want to learn while I'm working out, on a walk, doing the dishes, etc. I cannot understand how amazing this tool is because it turns everything into a productive time, if you choose. Pair that with the forced repetition you have of listening to the same stuff due to not being able to download wirelessly, and you're golden.

We have more free time to be productive than we admit to ourselves. Every morning I started exercising with P90X, went to work all day, then at night I was getting my Master degree, helping coach my sons sports team, running my local Boy Scout group and learning to be a gourmet cook. Now with my kids grown, I kayak, bike, hike, travel, continue to cook the most amazing recipes and I still have time to spare. As an example, the last two weeks I built my wife a massive Greenhouse so we can garden 24/7.

If you enjoy ideas about masculinity and mastery, I invite you to explore the videos I share on the Mastery Order Channel. Challenge yourself with some concepts about manhood, explore your masculine potential to the maximum and become the kind of man you would respect. We can only better ourselves together, as men among men, so I invite you to use what I share and, of course, share your own opinions so that others can benefit from them as well. All the best to you!
