This is a tachometer, it’s a gauge that is usually in the dash letting you know how fast the engine is spinning, which tells you what you can expect from your engine, power wise and when to shift.
And notice that I said usually in the beginning. A tachometer used to be more of a luxury extra, either available only in higher trims or only on more premium cars. But up until the 2000s, the only cars that still didn’t get them were some proper nuggets, speaking of which...

the reason you need the speedo in 2cyl mode is because you only actually have 2 coils, the spark is shared across 2 cyl! its a very french design

I LOVE how you do non destructive modifications to the Twongi! A lot of KZfaqrs I watch sometimes do questionable mods that are often irreversible of which ruin their cars. Plus the mod is actually pretty well executed, so I think it’s justifiable!

The tacho needs to be in 2-stroke mode, because the ignition coil are running in wasted spark configuration. Wasted spark means, that one coil fires 2 cylinders at TDC at the same time, one spark ignites the fuel mixture, other is fired into the exhaust, hence why it is called "wasted spark". It saved the Renault the cost of two ignition coils.

Twingo and many cars from 90s have semi sequential fuel injection and uses wasted spark ignition. That means that injectors work in pairs 1&4 and 2&3. Also there are two coils for cylinders 1&4 and 2&4. So if ECU send signal to coil two spark plugs are ignited. One spark is wasted and not used. I have Safrane 2.5R5 that have similar system but one cylinder is without pair but on my another V6 Safrane all three cylinders have pairs. Also they use generic 4 channel ECU from Bosch that was used in 4 cylinder cars with full sequential injection. I have full technical documentation on twingo and other renaults.

I'd think that the twingo, as many other renaults of the time has something called "parasite spark ignition", where one coil sends out a spark to 2 cylinders at the same time instead of just 1 - so 2 coils are enough for 4 cylinders (and putting a spark into a cylinder which is currently in the exhaust stroke is no big deal). This is probably what causes the rpm gauge to work well only in 2 cylinder mode.

As a Colombian, i love these videos. The Twingo use once if the most popular cars here and they are dirt cheap, because the first generation was sold until late 2012. Might buy one as a project car

1:16 Yup. Sounds just like me. Drive an unfamiliar car. Money shift an 08 Corolla (Total accident)(Foreshadowing potential issue with shifter bushings), get wrecker engine (Similar km/miles) inspect clutch disk and shifter linkage bushings, both FUBAR. Both got replaced & upgraded before the car made it back on the road... :3

I usually just shift and revmatch by audio feeling and also if you search on the internet/try yourself you can find the gear ratios and maximum speed (in second it's like 80ish and in third its like 123ish) so you also have a reference to which compare rpms (like, in third at 80ish the engine should be around 3 thousand rpms). For the "lights without turning the switch" thing, if you are concerned about the dimming light of the tachimeter when turning lights on I read on the Italian's Twingo Community that there should be a solenoid behind the tachimeter's screen that you should be able to regolate in some ways (I really don't know how tho, maybe by changing some resistance(?)) so the tachimeter's light won't dim (also you could apply plastic filters upon the led so you can see the speed better). Wonderful fourth gen music as always!

0:10 - What a crazy twist of events... every vehicle I have EVER owned where either the tach or the speed fail it has always been the speed. You can guess RPM from speed, but the truth is RPM is so much more important! Love the video, this is in my top 3 favorite KZfaq series. The Twingo and you/your crew really tickle my fancy

For the 3D printer, I did not expect to see such a relic of an Ender 3 in such a recent version. I personally recommend a Prusa Mini instead, my kit of this model has been very reliable for the two years I had it. The full sized Prusa machines are also well cloned by Sovol, though I don't know if those are still around. If you do not care about relying on a Chinese cloud and app, the Bambu printers offer better value.

here in Argentina there are a lot of people that 3d print a lot of pieces for the twingo. i have the front speakers “grills” and the air conditioner vent 3d printed too. they broke too easily

If that bed is giving constant adhesion issues consider using some sandpaper on it to remove the smoothness of the surface in the trouble spots. Gluestick also works in a pinch. Also keep in mind with a glass bed that it may take higher temps to get to be actually the correct temp. Pla can be very picky and strange at times. I've had some filaments need to be at 55 degrees heated bed and others needing to be 65.

I also had bed problems with my Ender 3. The printer broke down so many times (with driver, mosfet and in the end microcontroller issues) that I decided to buy a Neptune 4 havent had problem since then. Creality does have a serious quality control issue I do have in the end 3 dead mainboards lying around (was probably a psu issue or misfortune in the end but I couldnt bother since the bed was warped too), the connector from the psu to Mainboard melted so I had serious safety concerns.

When i installed my tacho it drove me nuts. First of all, i had no Idea what i was doing, so i fried its board and almost did the same to my coil. Had to get another one from Aliexpress (BTW, i got an LCD one, i think it really works together with the stock digital dash looks). After some research (and talking to some other Twingo owners, i figured it out: since the Twingo uses a wasted spark ignition, i needed a signal condenser, a little gadget that would take the 2 firing signals the ECU sends to the coil, and combine them into a single one for the tach (without leading to interference and shorting, preferrably). Doing that, it worked just Fine. The real trouble was finding a place to put the tacho so that it wouldn't look out of place. That's when having a 3D printer works wonders.

Like a majority of cars in the 90's, your engine have a wasted sparks system. That means your coil are in reality two coil in on part and it receive two signals for 2 cylinders each. You took only one signal so yeah, it work on 2 cyl setup.

The wireing part reminds me pf the time i had to figure out why my radiator fan just decided not to wanna work. After almost overheating in stop and go traffic. Some ass-hat decided to just casually joink the radiator fan fuze and splice in a marten defense system wich got crusty over time. I was very pissed yet happy I figured it out and fixed it.

If you have bed problem like the bed having low spot on the Ender 3, you can install custom firmware with manual mesh calibration to comphensate for it.

about the automatic leveling, print a 0Y crtouch offset adapter, the Y axis on the S1 is warped and causes issues because it assumes it isnt when theres a Y offset

Glad you and I had the same thought. I feel all cars should have a tacho, otherwise I'd be concerned about knowing when I'm supposed to shift. I wonder if it'd be possible to wire a speedo onto the Twingo as opposed to the digital speedo that it has in the centre of the dash?

My petrolhead OCD just kick in, and I need to word out of it! Please, can you make same cluster, with oil temperature, but that plastic tray with digital speedometer, that need to be "hacked" to come closer to the driver side, because you don't want chameleon eyes for the rest of the life! 😅

I would print the guage in ABS or ASA since then you can apply acitone vapour smoothing and it does not look too mouch DIY

I love this idea of reversible making mods reversible! its super annoying to get a car new to you and the previous owner put EVERY gauge known to man on the passenger side of the dash and steering column, (at least they were all defis!) that really should be normalized, but I really hate unfinished textured prints being used as a perm solution, I wish it was more often that prints are finalized with a coating of sorts to make them really look that 100%.

I've always wanted a pair of tachometer and temperature gaiges in my Twingo but never got courage to. Here in Brazil, this car is uncommon and I dont know some profissional who does this kind of job in this car earlier. My fear is do a wrong connection and put the circuits in risk of failure or worse.

I had some pretty terrible vibration in mine, but after I replaced the top engine mount (left side when looking in from the engine bay) it completely disappeared. The mount looked fine visually but it wasn't doing its job anymore, maybe it's similar on yours?
