After Jim Zapp's death in 2016, his lifelong friend, Hall of Famer Willie Mays, paid tribute to his teammate with a letter about how special "Zapp" was to him when he wrote, "I couldn't have asked for a better friend."
In this Skip's Corner episode, I tell about Jim Zapp's career from his first team in Hawaii until retirement. I was fortunate to have received the letter Willie Mays sent to Jim Zapp, Jr. about his dad and their special bond.
Published in Bittersweet Goodbye, the Black Barons, the grays, and the 1948 Negro League World Series (2017 , SABR Publishing), in tribute to Black History Month I read Mays' letter and sense the strong bond these teammates had; I believe you will, too.
