Take a ride in a classic car that has been converted to a full electric drivetrain.
Zelectric Motors is the brainchild of passionate VW fans David Benardo and Bonnie Rodgers. In 2011, they decided to put their east coast creative agency in their rearview mirror and headed back home to California. With a lifelong affinity for the VW brand and decades spent working with tech companies, they envisioned a fusion of the vintage classic and a future-forward electric drivetrain. In late 2012, after teaming up with hot shop EV West, conversion work began on a groundbreaking ride that would eventually become the ZelectricBug prototype.

I would love to go electric. I have a 69 Ghia that my son and I are working on. We saved it the crusher. We have a lot of work ahead of us. And would definitely entertain the electric option. Love the video! Thanks! 👍

The interior on this is so beautiful, you guys did a really good job. I've always loved the idea of converting old cars to electric power. I feel that it's a real use of old materials in conjunction with new technologies. This has become my dream car, and I'm really looking forward to owning one in the future :D

No antifreeze coolant!!! At all!! No water pump, no fuel pump, no fuel filter!!! The built-in engine resistance acts as braking, resulting in longer brake shoe life, less wear and tear! The engine partly recharges it's own batteries while it drives!!! OK😁WOW

I own and drive everyday an old '70 Spanish Dodge Dart straight 6 3.7L combining it with a much simple Citroen Dyane 2 cylinder boxer 0.6L, the result of filling their tanks every week is extremely expensive, here petrol is quite expensive... So i think the fact of getting an old utilitary car like a Beetle, or in my case the Dyane is a good choice to start working with it and making a project like yours, a good reason to do it is because eventhough it can be expensive at first, it will then be worth as it'll only take electricity to work, once built you won't have to take care of all the things a petrol engine needs and everything else, and by the way, you could also afford to improve its mechanical specs, as the power, top speed, noise and pollution of course... Maybe the most "purist" car enthusiasts wouldn't aprove it, i love classic cars, i love the smell of petrol and that smoke when i start my old beauties, but... I think sometimes is just great there are so creative people able to do something like this beetle, keeping it original at first sight, but with an extremely modern way to be used, and thats just great, and more over, a car like a volkswagen has plenty of new spare parts to buy at reasonable price. I'd really would love to do something like this, but here, in spain it would be twice expensive to make it legal than making the car, its sad... but thats what we've got... They just want us to buy new cars and not repairing or modifying our old ones. Greetings from Catalonia and congratulations for this great project!

Just having an old Bug that runs quiet is an advantage over the gas-powered ones. I grew up when there were plenty of Bugs still around and they all sounded like lawn mowers without mufflers.

Robbert P I have a 911. And I love it. And I understand them quite well. Do you even know what you are talking about? I think not. Wtf do you mean I don't understand them!!! It was just an offshoot idea anyway. I would have two. My motor 911 and my battery version. And the fact that the rear bay is huge and could hold a huge battery. I think a 911 would lend itself quite well to being a battery version.... What you think cause it doesn't have the signature flat six grouping monster in the back.... it's not a 911. Wow.... pretty weak. It's just an opinion. if you don't like it... that's your problem. Keep your comments to yourself. It's not a horrible idea. The only thing horrible is your closed mind. Btw.. The tesla sedan... can beat a modern Porsche GT3 off the line. May not on a quarter mile but in traffic in the city.... Good buy. Put that in your hat and smoke it.

930Scarlet Yes, the 911, 914 & 356 are in the works. We've had a lot of interest in these models - pretty simple really, the owners want a more reliable and drivable version of their favorite car. We also don't cut them up so they retain their value. Follow ZelectricBug for more info. Thanks for posting david(at)zelectricmotors.com

ZelectricBug You know I always thought so. The rear compartments are huge and I could easily see an electric motor fitted. Would be a very quick and nimble vehicle. Would be very fun too. Seriously. I could see having a city electric version for bumming around town and my other one for longer road trips. ha ha. Fun to see that come to fruition. And I like the thought of keeping look stock. Incase you want to swap back to the other engine. Best of both worlds. Ha ha.

930Scarlet Ok first you need to relax, I have a 911sc in the family that I drive quite often and replacing the experience of the flat 6 with an electric motor is a total disservice and a disgrace to the car. I understand your opinion on how you like electric cars, I myself like them but in a 911? It wouldn't be a 911 anymore, it would basically be the same thing as a beetle with an electric engine. Putting an electric engine in a beetle is something totally different, its the most produced car in history. I also understand the capabilities of the Tesla and I love that car, but it was designed as an electric car. An electric 911 is a cute and interesting idea but its not a good one. And if you haven't noticed, youtube has a section called "comments" where people voice their opinion, its also something thats in a little thing called the first amendment, I doubt you have heard of it. Of course there are people with disposable income who would love to convert a 356 to electric for no real good reason other than the fact that it would be "cool" and "green". These cars are not about torque that you would get from a electric engine, they are about horsepower. But I guess if you are hellbent on putting a dryer in your 911, do it, its not against the law to be idiot.

Why electric cars usually are small? It's easier to push small car than big one.
@jgpwlcs36

i know this is super late but i would assume that it is because of the small amount of energy they can hold in between charges. an electric powered car however has no lag to it whatsoever, so you put your foot down and the power is right there for you. I don't see why you could make something the size of a Tahoe an EV

EV = small car, not at all.. But I think that many private electric cars are small because of the users thinking. A typical 4x4 or sportscar user (I can only speak for Europeans) doesn't want an ev and doesn't care about the environment. A Tesla might be interessting now.. but only because it is costly and fast. Prestige is everything. I know electric Landrovers for many years, in some National Parks/Safaris they are standard. Surprisingly 4x4 EVs are very practical and efficent in open country!!

The mini-car, not the new one, the mini cooper, but that one also, but primarily the one that Mr.Bean drives, would also fit well into this little nifty configuration...
@sethjones5250
@sethjones5250 10 жыл бұрын
The mini is vastly superior to the original VW in a great many ways. It handles better, developed 50% more horsepower in stock form and it used space a lot more efficiently. One consequence is less room for anything mechanical in a mini. A-series engines can be tuned with a moderate degree of skill to more than 100 bhp, and don't require a lot more maintenance than any other car. The VW is a better candidate. That engine was woefully understressed and though easy to look after and reliable, its one of the few instances where an EV conversion is actually an upgrade. Still it would likely be easier and less expensive to do a porsche engine swap on a beetle.
