In just 6 minutes talk Dr. Harry Barry explains the simple technique of how to tame your irritable gunslinger (amygdala) and banish panic attacks forever. He also demystifies social anxiety in just a few sentences.
Dr. Harry Barry is a GP; a leading mental health commentator including regular slots on RTÉ Radio’s Today with Sean O’Rourke and author of best-selling #Flagging series covering Anxiety; Panic Attacks; Toxic Stress and Depression (available here amzn.to/2xV6h6P).
His interest in all things mental health began about forty years ago when he met a leopard at 3 in the morning in rural Tanzania.Three in the morning is not a good time to meet a leopard, if indeed such a time exists, but luckily for Dr Barry, he was well-armed. He had his amygdala, two small bunches of neurons either side of the brain who's job it is to spot leopards and other assorted hazards likely to lose a human a limb, or worse.
Once it has seen the danger, it reacts with lightning speed so, with it in charge of the situation that night in the Tanzanian bush, Dr Barry instantly froze. That was a critical reaction as movement would attract attention. Suddenly he was shaking, sweating, hyper-ventilating, his muscles went tense and his mouth dry.
The amygdala was preparing to run and it did that by sending messages that caused adrenaline to be poured into the bloodstream. Once he returned to the house after about 15 minutes, everything went back to normal - breathing, heart-rate - because the danger was gone.
For years, the leopard encounter served Dr Barry simply as a colourful anecdote from another period in his life. However, later, in his work as a GP in Drogheda, Co Louth, the experience took on new significance when he noticed the correlation between the physical response the symptoms of a panic attack.
Questions like this came to intrigue Dr Barry over the years as he found himself veering towards specialising in mental health. He was struck by the large number of patients he saw with mental health issues, and bothered by his own profession’s struggles to comprehensively and conclusively treat them.
Nine years ago he wrote his first book on the subject, Flagging The Problem: A New Approach To Mental Health, in which he touched the main mental health problems found in a GP’s waiting room. His latest book, the sixth in the series, is Flagging Anxiety and Panic - How To Reshape Your Anxious Mind And Brain.
His latest book, the sixth in the series, is Flagging Anxiety and Panic - How To Reshape Your Anxious Mind And Brain was published in the spring of 2016 and rapidly sold out.
Zeminar Presents is the world's first talk series built exclusively for Generation Z and their teachers and primary care givers. Covering mental and physical well-being, equality, sexuality, education, entrepreneurship, activism, volunteering, bullying, cyber-safety, science, motivation, inspiration and so much more.

Dr. Harry Barry is a Godsend. I suffer from panic attacks and GAD. The answer from the VA was drugs, and my family drugs...however hinking about it, even with the numerous therapist and Psychologists I've had...no one told me what a panic attack actually is. I'm 32 years old and would consider myself very healthy. I do not smoke and rarely drink. I still feel anxious sometimes, but this video and many of his others saved my life. The person reading this...You Are Not Alone, and This Too Shall Pass!

There are a few suggestions worth trying Work out why you are anxious - the first step to solving an issue is to understand why it is there. Be at ease about yourself - this makes it less difficult when you are with others. Just do it - you will become more confident by doing things - especially by doing things that push your limits. (I read these and more tips on Aghy magic method website )

I’m in the same boat, I think we need to understand like with anything if there’s no pain there’s no gain, this definitely isn’t easy but It does work, the biggest thing is not to panic during an episode, if you keep from panicking then it’s just an attack and not a panic attack. Not panicking will make you stronger and ensure that you will get through it as soon as possible. I wish you the best of luck and know you’re not alone in this.

I hate to say this but im so glad to hear how bad everybody in the comments anxiety is, as many of you will probably already know, anxiety can make you think that "these symptoms are ONLY happening to you, no, some people have anxiety but YOU are going to die, YOUR symptoms are actually dangerous, nobody else experiences this" but seeing that so many others do makes it easier to actually believe that this is just anxiety after all.

Flooding(visualize you are stuck to the seat): Allow the attack, or feelings to roll over you like an ocean wave. Do not practice breathing techniques, thought therapy, or fight it, smelling essential oils, don't do anything!. Anxiety is physical. Reshape the gunslinger(amygdala)5-8 mins you'll have the adrenalin rush, go with the symptoms. The more you try to stop the gunslinger the more it increases and fires. The more you go with him the more he calms down.

Dr. Barry helped me cure my panic disorder and insomnia. My life had become miserable and my anxiety was through the roof. I had a hard time sleeping and when I did, I was waking in the middle of the night in panic. The turning point for me was when I understood that panic is a physical phenomenon - caused by adrenaline and cortisol. Nothing more. It’s our own minds that attach fear to these sensations. There is nothing fearful about them - they are physical stimulation and sensations that are uncomfortable but that’s it. It’s a paper tiger. This allowed me to consciously ride the wave and the panic and anxiety started disappearing within minutes once I realized this. I also realized that my nervous system was very stressed so I studied up on supplements to help heal my nervous system. I started supplementing with over the counter products - B vitamins and magnesium, and taking CBD spray (legal where I live) late in the evening so my mind and body were calm before I went to bed. I also took valerian root when the anxiety was especially bad. I believe that all this helped heal and calm down my nervous system and the change in my outlook and understanding of panic and anxiety sealed the deal. I now sleep well through the night and have very manageable anxiety. I write this for those out there who feel they will never be “normal” again and will never sleep again - I certainly was worried that I would never go back to my former self and was I terrified that these issues would be permanent. They were temporary and what it takes to heal in my opinion is knowledge and a change of perspective, some good sleeping habits and focusing on healing and calming your nervous system. This worked for me.

I'm currently trying this with my constant anxiety attacks. My fear is of nothing but the attacks and symptoms. I've only been like this for about 8 weeks. A heart scare triggered it. After only a day or two of using Dr. Barry's methods, they do seem to be lessening. My attacks, though, don't last 10 minutes, it's more like an hour or more. It will come in waves all day, burning, tingling in my chest and limbs. Quite frankly I'm exhausted! I'm not giving up, though.

@bamabelle7075
@bamabelle7075 4 жыл бұрын
@@jasreeldomasing2470 I'm no doctor, and I'm not completely healed, but I have made great strides. Here's what I've done. (I warn you, it's long.) Firstly, I got a complete check up. I was found to be deficient in several vitamins and minerals. A deficiency in any one (D, B12, Iron, Magnesium, etc.) can cause anxiety and depression. I'm scheduled for a sleep study in early November. Sleep apnea or lack of quality sleep can cause or aggravate anxiety and depression. I cleaned up my diet by about 80%. I allow myself two meals and two snacks a week to eat whatever I want. The rest of the week, I eat for nutrition, mostly whole foods. I don't drink or smoke. I exercise everyday, though I still haven't begun cardio or strength training, which are important. I've been reading and following Dr. Stephen Ilardi's 6 steps to eliminating depression. His book is called The Depression Cure. (He has a Tedtalk right here on KZfaq that outlines those steps.) I started taking 400 mg magnesium glycinate daily. My therapist's NP said this was a good idea. There's a strong link between anxiety/depression and magnesium deficiency. MOST IMPORTANTLY...This is the best advice I'm going to give you. Study the teachings of Dr. Claire Weeks. She was the pioneer of the technique Dr. Barry describes. Even though she's been dead almost 3 decades, her work is still saving lives. Some kind souls have uploaded her recordings to KZfaq. I'll link you one. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g66iZ8Rolr6renk.html Do what she teaches. Do exactly what she says. I listen to her recordings or read her book Hope And Help For Your Nerves daily. You will learn something new every time! I'm serious, it's like she's speaking directly to you. Her acceptance method is not easy at first. It takes time. It takes a lot of practice. And when you have a setback after doing well, you'll feel defeated and heartsick. That's when you turn back to Dr. Weekes. She will get you through. I do encourage you to read her book. She speaks about the sometimes necessity of tranquilization. (It helped me a lot because I was afraid of my benzo after realizing that my antidepressant exacerbated my anxiety/panic X10. I'm down to 1 daily dose of 0.25 Clonazapem.) Also, stay away from kratom tea and marijuana. After weeks of consistent improvement I was almost cured. I drank kratom tea and it set off a full blown panic attack. I now believe it's what started my whole ordeal. Turns out kratom, just like some antidepressants, can actually cause anxiety in those who don't have it, increase anxiety in those who do and induce panic attacks, even in long term users like myself. Good luck! And don't forget to check out that Dr. Weekes recording.

The worst for me is the dry mouth. Makes it hard to swallow and makes me think its hard to breathe. I can beat them through most of the day but for some reason when I’m falling asleep i will have a panic attack and will jolt straight up in bed when i was almost asleep in a dream like state. Then ensues the fear of falling asleep. So now i have to “flood” in my bed or sitting on my couch at night. I guess my point is once you’ve “beat it” during when it normally happens(for me it was mid day through until i went to bed) it may try and pop in at another time. Don’t let this scare you as you just have to not respond and teach it theres no real danger in any part of your day. Still sucks but hang in there!!

Ok so I got massive attack and rode it out for 24 minutes, this goes long it took to settle down more or less. But while I was floating and flooding I was getting little bursts of panic from intrusive thoughts. So it was frustrating. I’m feeling edgy and panicky again now, so going to ride this out and see how long it takes to ride the wave.

I tend to awake around 3 AM in a panic state and feed the flame. I can not stand being in my skin, why are we alive, deep breathing and going in and out of house. Psychiatrist put me on Lexapro told my Dr. I felt good so he stopped it. It is a horrible feeling waiting for sunrise from 2 or 3 AM. Winter is the worst will try gluing myself and accepting the chemical rush. The Best Thank You so much for sharing your wisdom.

This method is basically Claire Weekes' Four Stage treatment. It's not essentially "flooding", but you can do it via flooding. Research literature has shown that progressive exposure is much more affective and causes less relapses than flooding. Flooding, for those who don't understand the concept entails skipping all the levels of exposure and going straight to the thing you fear most. It's basically like jumping into a hot bath without dipping your toe in first: you'll either be able to cope with the heat and gradually adjust, or it will scold you and make you MORE anxious about taking a bath. So be careful.

I started getting severe panic attacks in 2020 and I thought I was going to die. It would last almost all day or on and off during the day. And it was happening for 6 months I was even hospitalized one time it was so bad. Then it disappeared and reservist again a week ago and it's constantly now just going away for a few min then starts up again. I'm totally exhausted 😢 I was woken up at 1am in the morning with it and it lasted for a few hours. I'm currently going through menopause en I get a lot of hot flushes 😢 all the time.

Flooding advice is good, but it’s not true that nobody can ever see signs of anxiety in others - weakens your persuasiveness. But you otherwise clearly know your stuff. I like your videos overall.

Richard Fishbein what he try to say is that people witch never had panic anxiety would never 👀 see it, how is that they have not experienced it so how could they know, I could not see it before I got it now I can feel it when a person in the same rom have it, what do I do I do stop ✋ my job to help this person because it’s the most horrible feeling you ever can get

Ali Mohammed I understand completely; however, there are obvious signs of nervousness that any perceptive person can recognize. For example, face turning flush/white from blood draining to organs, shaking hands, fingers, legs, rapid breathing, quivering voice, etc. It is actually unhelpful to give anyone a false sense of security as someone may notice one’s symptoms...no big deal. It is true that fewer people than you might think will actually notice.
