Gyroscopes, they are a fun physics toy and excellent learning/scientific tool. I have made a few very crude power gyroscopes in the past just as a passing curiosity, but a recent conversation with a subscriber mentioned his love for gyroscopes as well as Clickspring's video.
• Clickspring: Benchtop ...
I did a quick search and found that a video bridging the gap between the hot gluers and the lathe turners didn't really exist in a thorough manor. Here I am to tackle that as I discuss what to choose for a motor, a flywheel, frame materials, construction, wiring, as well as tricks and demos.
Like my other DIY videos this isn't your one of stamp and clone project, the goal is to show you options and methods so that you have a higher chance of succeeding with what you have access to!
Support the channel directly and keep it sponsor free. I have also structured ads to be minimal so that you can watch more comfortably without distraction!

i once found a old russian military stabilized binocular on a yard sale, it has a free floating inner part with prismatic lenses and a gyroscope to stabilize it all, its amazing how stable it is, much better than any image stabilizing lenses i ever had. its a Peleng 1240GS might do a video about it someday.

You can tell the wattage by the size of the wires usually due to thicker wires for more wattage
@Zenodilodon
@Zenodilodon Ай бұрын
Wrong, you can tell the amperage. I can send 100A at 10v through a really thick wire which is 1,000 Watts. However voltage doesn't require thick wires. So if I send 1,000 volts I just need a wire that can theoretically handle 1 Amp, or 1/100th the cross sectional area and get the same 1,000 watts through it.This is part of the reason why the electrical grid is stepped up to several Kilovolts for transmission over distance.

Made my first laser out of the stuff. My brother in law does quite a bit with carbon fiber, not sure how much these days. It's excellent stuff and works well with L channel. Downside is how terribly irritating it is. I did a number on my skin. You can tell at one point where my hands are pinker than normal.

@@Zenodilodon Yes, I'm already using 1/4 round 2020 extrusions with aluminum sheets. But, still need to send out for black anodize or baked enamel. Yeah, I noticed the reddish hands and fiber burrs, before polishing. Worked with fiberglass layups and grinding molds, back in my youth. Rubber gloves and eye protection are a must. Was thinking that, given the lathe, your final build might benefit by turning those teeth off the flywheel. I like the idea of the back 2 back motors (mounted onto a central plate). Interesting tests regarding rotation direction while hanging from the string, as well. At 1st, I was wondering whether the direction depended upon the spin direction or if it rotated the opposite direction on the southern hemisphere, like water draining from a flushed toilet. Seems to be a combination of RPM & angle of the dangle, like the tilt of a circling helicopter. As you said, there's a void between OTC motors and lathe turned flywheels. So, most folks (kids of all ages) never get to observe these experiments.

@@TheOleHermit I had thought about turning the teeth off the gear, but I think what I am going to do is watch out for clear containers that I can make plastic rings out of. That should kill the air drag pretty decently too. I found another VHS tape head and a 12w little fan. Very tempted to make another one using hard drive platters for the frame. Probably should forgo the expenditure of time though. I have strong considerations for giving the TEA Laser pointer another go around for the next video. I should have all the bits. Since my early attempts I have learned a bunch about those Lasers too.

@@TheOleHermit Regarding the percession direction or rotation. That has to do with what side of the flywheel the gyroscope is hung from and what direction it's spinning the flywheel. There is a gap in a lot of projects. Many simple tutorials without substance that run for 10 mins and a little jingle. There are also the heavy hitters with better capabilities. I feel there is a whole bunch of actual real world resources that the DIY community doesn't consider. Some of it is inexperience, some of it is barrier of DIY replication. That's why in a bunch of my videos I try to show many examples to fill in between theory and practical building. I hope it gets the creative problem solving juices running. It's a buzz kill to see something that someone else has and yet have no idea how to make something similar.

been looking at trying to use (18:19) motors as drone motors so glad it might be possible to drive them harder for higher speed, (got some that do not have that base at all, just a small bit of metal inside the disc of the top spinning rotor that terminates on a set of threads around the shaft assembly (and inside this the pins for the power input) that screw down into the base of the hard drive case, so next to no material on them that is not part of the motor assembly and a bit of bulk to stack the platters on. Also they are from scsi drives that had an RPM rating already of 15000 or 20,000 RPM lol (for faster seek times I am guessing, in data centers,) Wish I had managed to capture them all but left a batch of the drives behind that I had not dissassembled (these things were so hard core there were solid metal punch outs like 1/4 inch thick used as weights to absorb vibration so definitely for data centers LOL )
@Zenodilodon
@Zenodilodon Жыл бұрын
Those server hard drive motors sound like awesome candidates for a drone. The regular 7,200 RPM motors are astonishingly capable in power. The stack of platters sounded like a mosquito! I wonder if they keep the space in the server HDDs just to prevent clutching and damage to other components in the rack. The motors like I showed are very low clearance along the magnet ring, I don't think they would hold up very long in a practical working environment for a drone just due to the ease of contamination getting inside. A few blades of grass of a decent bug would be enough to muck it up and then how do you effectively clean it. As i said all things to consider for selecting a motor lol.

Funny story regarding those oil impregnitude bushings... I was needing some without the oil for some specific thing I was building years ago. I tried my best to bake the oil out like in an oven on a cookie sheet. I swear it's insane how much oil comes out of them and it will just keep coming and soaking into the paper towel or whatever you're using to catch it. But it takes hours and hours and hours and still there's oil that keeps coming out now and then
@Zenodilodon
@Zenodilodon Жыл бұрын
I could see that happening. I wonder what the typical % of oil there is in the material. A solvent might thin it and draw it out quicker too. Figure it has to be decently heat resistant and low evaporating. You could heat it until it carbonizes and enjoy your " Graphite " lubricated bushing :P

@Zenodilodon
@Zenodilodon Жыл бұрын
Glad to hear fan and fellow DIY enthusiast. The plasma pens are one of those projects where you just need to have nearly everything custom made and tuned around the transformer. There is a plasma pen DIY video on Join The Technicians which is about as direct and simple as it can get. This is also a decently high fail rate project as the transformers like to burn up. I would suggest looking up that video if you have not seen it. As far as a kit, not sure how I would even go about that honestly, just for the reasons listed above. I have parts, but still it would take some time and level of assembly just to make sure it even works as a functional LC oscillator. If I did put something together it would be a solid day or 2 process of custom tooling and careful component selection, a one of that would probably be not the cheapest for the actual physical parts you would get. That's the nature of niche devices.

I haven't watched the whole thing yet so I apologize if you already mentioned it... But there are few sources for ridiculously high precision " flywheels". One of the cheapest and easiest to get a hold of is the head inside of a VCR or similar optical/magnetic drives. Even those big funky format tape drives out of servers and things like that they still use these days for some reason Literally one of the most precision things that most people ever come across although they probably don't realize it. The spinning head and associated parts are some of the most precisely tolerance and machined pieces that most folks will ever come in contact with in their whole lives. It's insane how highly tolerance they are. I got interested in it and checked into it more myself after watching the old show from Tim Hunkin "The secret Life of machines". Specifically the one about video recorders I believe

Gyroscopes on planes prove the earth is not a globe because a Gyroscope stays on its original bearings ignoring gravity so if a planes gyro is started before it leaves and then travels from the equator to the pole the gyro shows that it is on level position instead of 90 degrees different than when it started
@Zenodilodon
@Zenodilodon 2 ай бұрын
In theory your assumption is correct, however there are some caveats. These you can actually prove to yourself if you take the time. So a plane doesn't really go that fast on the surface of the Earth. It would actually take about 45 hours to do a full rotation. The Earth is rotating faster so in actuality the rotational force of a plane would be like half as strong. Think of it like this... You have an ant on a bowling ball that can run around the circumference once a minute. The ball spins around twice a minute. Why do I bring this up? Well i am pointing out that it is actually easier to measure the planetary angular velocity than an airplane's. So let's do that, one rotation every 24 and not 45 Hours... We can even go a bit faster and measure a full rotation ever 12 hours or about 4 times a plane's experienced angular velocity. ( one rotation every 45 hours ). Simple enough to make a test for... Simple, make a stage that rotates once every 12 hours and put a gyroscope on it. The gyroscope should react to the rotation of the stage that rotates yes? It should react to a stage that rotates even if it's once every 12 hours?... Actually no.... So when you as a human play with a gyroscope you will tend to rotate it very quickly in your hand and you will very quickly see the influence that it has on the gyroscope. You will also notice that when holding one, the faster you move against it's axis of rotation the more you feel the gyroscope fight back. However, if you move it very slowly then you barely feel anything at all. This is the biggest thing to understand. Mechanical gyroscopes have mechanical and air friction. This consumes a bit of energy. You need to have enough energy over time to overcome these frictions, and a single rotation in 12 hours is basically nothing for energy input to overcome these frictional losses. Move a gyroscope in your hand and rotate it just once an hour and you will struggle very hard to feel any gyroscopic force. A mechanical gyroscope simply too loses to much to friction. To overcome this they make optical gyroscopes and they use a laser to measure angular momentum on those minute scales. Very cool devices and I suggest reading up on them! One was actually bought by a Flat Earther that goes by Bob and sure enough even he got a 15 or so degree per hour drift on it.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_laser_gyroscope The proper tools for the proper job, Grandma's eye glasses won't let you see your blood cells.
