A musician friend of mine said that what Zeos doesn't like about these is and I'm sudo quoteing my friend now if there is something wrong with the mix the K371s are just all too happy to show it to you. I guess well according to Nic at least these things are too studio for just listening. But funny Zeos liked the 361s. In that review he said for those cans exactly what my friend said for these. If a song sounds trash on them guess what? That's cause it is trash.

I looked up the harman curve, instantly I went to look at my saved EQ settings for all my things just to see if I've naturally gravitated towards that... They all closely resemble the harman curve. That's actually kinda crazy.
@metal571
@metal571 4 жыл бұрын
Kind of similar to what happened to me. It's funny because it's what the majority of listeners prefer but headphones, especially higher end ones, have classically targeted much brighter signatures. Change is occurring
@davidcorson2435
@davidcorson2435 4 жыл бұрын
Your EQ is an offset of frequency response. The only real way to see whether you are achieving the harmon curve (or any frequency response for that matter) is to do frequency spectrum analysis by recording or viewing a signal like white noise or pink noise through a test rig (such as a binaural head with room EQ wizard). While it's cool that your EQ compares to the harmon target, what really matters is the resulting frequency response curve - the EQ only contributes partly to this.
@Storebrand_
@Storebrand_ 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidcorson2435 The point isn't that the EQ makes my speaker/headphones match the curve, rather that I'm just getting closer to what harman hypothesizes. My EQs are unique to each pair of speakers/headphones, obviously they all differ in fre/res, but all the EQ curves boost/lower similar frequencies in harman's curve.
@arthurhaywood2184
@arthurhaywood2184 4 жыл бұрын
No..... It's not crazy..... It's science..... Reviewers should have a basic understanding of psychoacoustics, the Harman curve & the principles behind it. Human hearing is particularly sensitive in the 1KHz - 5kHz range. Ever wonder why most people find a crying baby to be annoying? Because it's supposed to! We don't perceive that measured dip in the frequency response as a dip. We perceive it as flat (If it's done right.).
@davidcorson2435
@davidcorson2435 4 жыл бұрын
@@Storebrand_ My point is that the harman curve is a response - not an EQ... Maybe I'm just kind of confused with your response . To be clear: your EQ could be the exact opposite of the harman curve and STILL YIELD the harman curve... You can't get "closer to what harman hypothesizes" by simply having curves that "boost/lower similar frequencies in the curve" UNLESS you are doing so to correct the underlying frequency response. Forgive me if I'm just reiterating something you're aware of.

Got them (recommended to me in your discord channel that you frequent anymore :P) and I'm pretty happy. Though the pads are great, I got some chinese HM5 hybrids knock offs and that made the sound-stage wider and the sound a bit more v-shaped, not to mention even more comfortable, so I stayed with it. Ordered a few aftermarket cables to see if I can improve on that coiled one (mine is not as bad as that, but still a bit stiff on the straight part). To me they oscillate but just between meh and awesome, depending on the track, so yeah, I'm happy, especially given the price.

I own them...and damn i have fun with them. Im definitely not super critical, but also not.. unconcerned with audio quality and sound. Going from my k7xx to these, it feels the exact same but with better bass/overall equality of lows and highs. I will say, some things come through rough, but also..coming from open back i dont mind. I guess my hearing will suffer from the shrill noises, but I do love them for what I do. gaming/edm/classical music through schiit stack is amazing. runs about half the level of the k7xx on the amp.

The problem with "neutral" is that mastering varies so much that it almost doesn't matter anymore. This is called the Circle of Confusion. The studio monitors used to produce the music aren't flat, the mics aren't flat, EQ is usually added during mixing and mastering, then the consumers don't have a flat headphone or speakers either.

Your description of the Harmon curve isn't quite right. It's nothing to do with what humans prefer - it's all about making the headphones sound the same as PERFECTLY FLAT loudspeakers, listened to in an average environment. When listening to speakers, there is typically some loss of treble by the time the sound reaches us - that's why the Harmon curve reduces the treble.

I often times find myself disagreeing with Zeos...however, this review is spot on. I believe what Z was referring to with sounding bad is probably related to the very small but apparent spike in the treble from 6 to 7.5 khz (about 8db). This isn't always noticeable unless the song has an aggressive tilt in that frequency. A great example of this can be heard listening to Tom Sawyer by Rush. Geddy Lee's vocals and keyboard synthesizer and Alex Lifeson's guitar and Neil Peart's crash symbols are prevalent in that range. I really love them, but that peak can become a bit much at times. Another thing to keep in mind is the pads are shallow and soft, so if you have larger ears, they will touch the inner cup after extended use, due to the pads becoming extra soft with body heat. Also, for gaming these are quite good (at least when I tested them playing Dead by Daylight with my EL Stack).

Harman curve is also considered the headphone mixing and mastering standard, headphones like the shure 1540, focal spirit pro, and hd 600 try to replicate It. It takes into account the vibrations and transitions of sounds throughout a room from a purely flat speaker. So not only is it actually one of the most accurate headphone in its price range, its way more comfortable and well built than its peers. But what youre experiencing with the sound is a hotly mixed track. These don't perfectly match the harmen signature, they are a bit brighter. So because of that, mixes that have too much high end will be exposed REAL FUCKING QUICK.

The headphone measures close to Harman’s target, so it depends if your personal target is close to Harman’s or not. It does have a dip at 4kHz, where we are very sensitive, so that is a factor. But for $100-$150, these are my recommendation for closed back, and the X2HR for open back.

Dam bro that's confusing. Also it's harder as he didn't name any songs that were trash nor really explain why. Or at least what heard that causes him to say they are trash with the trash songs.

Zeos... I'm like you. I've been on a quest to find the perfect sub $200 closed headphones for several years now. I've tried a ton, but can't find any that come close to beating the 250 ohm version of the Beyerdynamic DT250. If you can get past the dated broadcast production design--they've been in production for AT LEAST 15 years--the clunky coiled cable and the goofy protrusion where it attaches to the left earcup, you'll be rewarded with the most neutral and most natural sounding headphone. I took them to bed. They're part of my nightstand rig and currently are plugged into a Geshelli Labs Archel2 Pro. Sound amaze-balls. No joke. You do have to do a small mod to the cable where it attaches, or there is some pretty obvious channel imbalance. 5 minute fix--no more channel imbalance. Until I find something that tops these, my choice for sub $200 closed cans is the 250 ohm DT250. Would love to see you review a pair.

For me the issue is pushed bass below 50ish Hz and a weird lack around 50/60-100 Hz. Depending on the bass drum tuning it’s either way too much or barely existent. And when bass drum is combined with sine sub bass, it’s mostly gone. For some songs that makes these useless for me. For example the whole i,i Album by Bon Iver. Other Folk albums however sound near perfect. Also I feel like the vocals often times overpower the rest as the peak seems at around 2.5-3k. It would have sounded more balanced in my ears when 1.5k-2k would have been more present in comparison. I‘m absolutely with you. Weird love-hate relationship.

@@jhon9364 I like the Sennheiser HD 660s in that regard. Other than that, digging deeper into the HD 560s might be an option as well. That being said - I kept the K371 s and also got used to their signature. Now I like to use both, the Sennheisers as well as the AKGs. I tend to choose the headphones for specific music. Overall the HD 660s feel like the better all rounder for my music consumption.

I heard the Yamaha MT5s extensively recently at Guitar Center, they sounded good, but a bit boring and flat, as I would've expected, as monitors. For good monitors the Yamahas are quite good, though. I also listened to these AKGs, sorry it might have been the 361s, and found the fit HORRENDOUS, headband too thin, they just felt weird, and the sound, either too bass-heavy (but muddy) or thin and annoying. Reject! I also tried the AKG 551s on (which I'd been seriously considering buying), the fit was shockingly terrible, either too loose or slipping on my head, the sound was at least decent, though. One thing I've learned is Guitar Center pushes mainly studio monitor stuff, they don't have much in the way of headphones that can be seen as "fun" listening cans. I ended up buying the AT M20xs, forgiving AT for their past harshness, but they still don't sound as warm and fun as my HIfimans, PortaPro, or Linsouls. Guitar Center had gazillions of cheap TASCAM monitors hanging there: I read up on those, well, they're decent, but really intended specifically for studio and mixing work. I wouldn't really expect them to sound great for pleasure listening purposes.

@@thiscorrosion900 I agree about your experiences of the AKGs (especially the awful 551, worst fit in the universe and thinnest sound), but the MT5 in my experience are v.powerful (though well judged and tight), v.fast and v.accurate ...but not flat (and from their measured response graphs they are proven not to be flat). Also you can drive the MT5's v.loud and they maintain their accuracy and don't distort - in this they are among only a few headphones in the world - really!!! ( - that's the MT5s folks).

@@thiscorrosion900 I have a lot of headphones, partially for 'on the road studio' use and partly just for listening, I requiring a headphone experience close to hifi speakers but also with the speed and detail of studio monitors. The Yamaha MT5s are my all round favourite, I use them 90% of the time (I have 3 pairs in different locations). My next favourite is the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO (tesla drivers) - but they need an amp and are only for critical studio use - too harsh for general use (and their bass distorts easily, as most headphones do - except the MT5s). Yes the MT5's if anything are slightly dark, but this means you can turn them up without hearing fatigue. Not come across anything better, but each to their own, I have no idea why Z has such an aversion to Yamaha that he doesn't review the MT5s!
