Another thing to note: heroes/lords with the "duelist" trait usually have a low splash attack max values, while units with the "melee expert" trait usually have high splash attack max values. High "splash attack max" values also isn't necessarily a good thing if the unit doesn't also have a high weapon strength. A unit with a low splash attack max value will usually kill whatever it hits, while a unit with a high splash attack max and low weapon strength (perhaps from a magical debuff) will struggle to execute units because their damage is being spread across many (up to 12!) targets on every swing.

The problem then is the flying elves now have invincibility frames as they get up.

afaik they still take damage from spells and ranged attacks that hit them - they're just not eligible for being targeted by melee strikes. But given the fact that they're not attacking themselves I think it evens out. If anything, this whole interaction increases Grimgor's survivability in melee because he's not being hit by as many enemies while he's standing around waiting for his melee attack cooldown.

@@SleepyFen I disagree, in warfare getting knocked down might as well be a death sentence in melee combat. It's the reason why in something like DnD if you attack something that is prone, you get advantage on your attack rolls increasing the likelihood that you hit.

@@sk8paradoxity Yeah but it doesn't matter if you disagree because the game mechicanics don't work that way. In real life yeah getting knocked down would be brutal but in only war it makes them do a animation to get up and then they can't attack while doing that and have to walk back into combat a very short distance.

@@sk8paradoxity total war warhammer is a game of fantasy spectacle, not scientifically accurate battle simulations. Single entities having the ability to send units flying increases their prowess in melee combat, at no cost to themselves, by basically making them take less damage during the cooldown of their melee attack. It's a stylistic choice which adds to the spectacle without making them completely overpowered or having to make them essentially invisible on the battlefield.

@@SleepyFen usually the characters with splashy damage effects are creatures that have like the strength of 10 men canonically. IE - lizardmen being 8 foot tall sauruses swinging clubs that hit like pillars. Kroxigors being 2 stories tall canonically swinging literal pillars. Yeah they're gonna go flying - the physics are there XD You might see an empire general swing their sword and knock a single target over (and they usually die).

dont try kairos even tho he recomended it for new players, kairos is a very hard campaign, also realms of chaos sucks cock, immortal empires is so much better

Knock back and shoving of units from splash attacks and charge is beneficial even if there’s no damage, because those units can’t attack while that’s happening.

We need more hidden stats covered! There is so much to learn about this game and they don't explain much of it that isn't faction specific. I play 50/50 multiplayer and my friend and I both have 1200+ hours in this game and every now and then we are still learning new mechanics. At about 1000 hours each we learned you could move your reinforcements bubble. So many lost armies we could have saved had we known we could move where they come in to the map.

Is their a splash attack max for artillery? Or is that covered in the full length video?

Iirc, ranged attacks don't have splash parameter at all. Each projectile that hit the... hit box of each individual model in unit - deals damage. The missiles however have parameters of how much targets it can pierce through. Arrows can hit 1 model, cannon balls can hit nearly 6-10 models in unit. Each piercing do the full damage of missile, so cannon ball can delete half-a-unit of spearmen if hitted from rear in a perfect shot. And explosive damage also haven't splash max parameter, it deal damage to every model in blast radius - in wh3, damage bot mitigated from center to the corners of the splash radius, so explosions deal really good damage to low-hp models, such as elves and rats.

Oh and I forgot that unit types of sizes have various "missile stopping power" parameter, which don't allow to missiles pierce through. In example, trolls parameter is high enough to stop ballista bolts and cannon balls, so each of those missiles can hit only 1 model of troll - instead of multiple infantry models. The more larger unit size, the more that parameter and more it stops big missiles. In last 5.0.3 hotfix, CA fixed thunderbarge missile stop power to 20, I think it is nearly maximum parameter which could be, so every single missile don't pierce trough the thubderbarge and don't fly after it hit it.

​@@wowddo Yeah there was a collision issue with the Thunderbarge balloon where missiles would just fly through it instead of hitting it, artificially making the Thunderbarge much harder to hit. Now it's practically impossible to miss, which is good.

Probably not, smaller unit sizes tend to be horribly balanced against single entities and non-single entity artillery gets more or less completely screwed

This is what I hate, the visual flair, (by the way great description ) why can't they just show me the damage he is actually doing, is damage to six guys every hit not impressive.

I dislike how info like this as well as things like the statistical effects of vigor loss are not findable anywhere in the vanilla game’s ui. You have to either crack open the files or go on the wiki, which is really dumb considering how important things like how melee attack/defence is actually ccalculated, what armor actually does, missile accuracy, penetration, etc.
