To be honest the price makes this a difficult choice, but it’s the range that makes it a complete non-starter as an adventure bike.

“an extremely important bike”? This has to be the most insignificant bike all year. An adventure bike where you need to end your adventure 45 miles later and turn around for a charge.

This is not an adventure bike just because a manufacturer and a few journalists say it is. Its not that long ago when certain journalists were telling us Stuart Garner's Norton has built a great British Sportsbike.

I owned and rode a 2017 Zero DSR for 19 months over several thousand miles as well as using public EVSE level 2 stations here in California, very close to where Zero is located. I was waiting for the DSR/X to be revealed to determine what to do. I also looked at the Energica Experia. Because I ride on the highway or in coastal areas to arrive at offroad trails 85 miles is not that much greater than the 70 miles I got on the DSR. The Experia has DC to DC level 3 charging, but only 3kW level 2 which is much more prevalent here in CA. In comparing the prices between similarly featured DSR/X, Experia, and the Ducati Multistrada V4S I went back to gas from electric. The features on the MS V4S ECLIPSE both EV bikes; i.e., semi-active electronically controlled suspension are just one small example. I loved EV ownership and riding. I'm proud to have been an early adopter; an ACTUAL owner of a DSR. I'd return in a heartbeat but not until the charging infrastructure matures and EV bikes include features I now consider 'need to have' on the Ducati, which is the first Duck I've ever owned in my lifetime of racing motocross, desert, and road racing.

As the owner/rider of a Stealth B52 I can honestly say once you get used to the different type of power delivery it’s great and makes my fuel powered bikes seem a bit old fashioned at times, BUT the range thing is a constant issue. You don’t stop for ten minutes fill up and go, hence why the distance riders will fail to buy these bikes, however the rider that rarely does more than 100k or 60 mile will love this bike if his or her pockets are deep enough. Thanks for the look 👍

I think that perhaps your local Zero dealer didn’t put any effort into selling their Zero stock. There are plenty of people out there that can afford the price tag, they just need a bit of effort on the marketing side. Advertising, test rides and so on.

Think this would work really well as a rural commuter. Got the legs and umph the other options don't have to actually reach built up areas, and more importantly the luggage/load capacity to operate as a car replacement. Deffo need to get my hands on one of these when a demonstrator becomes available near me. Think with the bigger battery option and the spoked wheels it may well be the first electric bike that would be practical for my use case. Just gotta decide if the miniscule running costs are enough to convince me to part ways with anything from my existing fleet, cause £24k is alot of money compared to an ICE machine of similar specifications.

It’s worth taking a quick look on Zero’s website. Very few options with this bike, so it’s basically fully loaded for that price. It is a shocking price though, if you’ll excuse the pun… 🥵

Don't forget the Energica Experia alternative. 22.5 kWh battery, 160 mile range, 24 kW CCS DC Fast Charging (1 hr or less), wind tunnel designed, and a lower entry price ($23,750 US).

We all know that things can only improve once the big four get involved. Untill then Zero are trying there best, but there a bit shit tbh🤣 Far too expensive, unlockable extras you get charged for, and shite range. Seriously can't understand anyone that would buy one? Wait for the Japanese to come to the party, and then see what happens to Zero 👍

One thing that would be useful/interesting to see is how long it takes to charge from 10% to 90% SOC on a public charger. Also as an adventure bike how affected would the battery be in case of some falls.

Zero does not have DC fast charging unlike other EV motorcycle brands, so the time to charge will always be double or triple of what you can get with their competitors.

Thats ridiculous frankly. Costs as much as a 1250 GS, usable in city only :D . I've just come back from 3 days ride in the Alps, with the total of 1200km. With my Africa Twin, refueling was the last thought on my mind . With this Zero, i would've needed a week to do the same tour, carefully tailoring the route on the needs of the bike. Nope, thnx. PS. How many did they sell of these ? How many Energica? I guess not too many, because among the hundreds of bikes i've seen on alpine passes, not a single one was electric. You can tour the world on a 90s Transalp for pennies. You can't do shit on an electric bike that costs as much as an SUV.

Why is everyone reporting this as the 1st electric adventure bike didn't the Energica Experia get announced a couple months earlier...? A bike with DC fast charging, even at it's low top rate that at least makes the Energica somewhat workable for highway trips, there's not even a lot of level 2s being built out on the highway, for these prices 50kw DC charging should be minimum 75, 100, 150 would be a dream

To me the difference between a “dual sport” and an “adventure” bike is the bias towards on-road touring. Zero claims a range of 85 miles at 70mph. Here in the US, most interstates have speed limits of 75-85mph, so you can likely expect a range much less than 85 miles. So this bike is probably a great commuter bike, or “dual sport”, but to call it an “adventure” bike is really just an exercise in misleading marketing.

You lost me at £24k. I don't care if it can go to the Moon on a couple of Duracell AAAs: I won't be buying one 'cos I can't. End of. However, it can't go the Moon, can it? It's only good for 'adventures' carefully plotted between charging points that are less than 100 miles apart, don't have a queue to use them and are actually working.

Having to charge so often and worrying about range anxiety would kill the fun out of any long range trip. They are not ready yet. And, as seen by Marc Travels in his latest post, reliability may be a real issue. Until the charging infrastructure gets better, and the price comes down, it's a no-go for me.

90 mile motorway range on an ADV bike is an absolute joke. What’s the point of all the comfort features if you can only ever ride it for 90 minutes before needing what, 45-60 minutes to get a decent charge up. Budget brakes, manual suspension, lots of cheap looking plastic… for £24,000! This claim that “you’ll never have to put fuel in it either” doesn’t add up anymore either. Public charging is actually quite expensive. Filling the base 17.3kW battery is going to be roughly £17 on most chargers. The larger 21kW optional battery, £21. You are not actually saving yourself any money in “fuel” costs for a £24,000 bike that looks like a Versys and can only go 100 miles before you’re forced to sit about for an hour. Add to this that you never want to fully drain an EV battery to keep your own stress levels low and keep charging speeds high, you’re looking at 70-80 mile effective range. Doing press days in Sicily on forest routes seems dumb, this is rich guy’s city bike just with Adv looks. That’s a legit audience to sell to, I see plenty of GS commuters but seems like too much compromise for anyone wanting a usable bike.

Until electric bikes give us the real world equivalent of a petrol tank on motorway were many see a tank north of 200 miles I’m just not interested. I had a loaner of the ds sure it had good torque but it was a nightmare in the slippery stuff that fell on test , also we spent a long time at 70 mph around Birmingham only to find we couldn’t get back to our destination 50 miles away, zero keep offering a Micky mouse process to charging we should now be on built on ac 7kwh and dc 100kwh all via a ccs not need a block of chargers connected via a pc cable or having to pop the seat and leave on to charge it’s backwards to everything useful or allow you to grab lunch while it charges we got exactly 82 miles motorway we know that because Dave ran out pulling into the service station forget cars we need a motorcycle revolution in battery tech before it gets to late as I’ll be dammed of I swap to something with 1/3 of the range just because some politicians have a beef with exhaust noises
