John McDonald has a sights problem with his Henry Big Boy - How do you correct a high shooting rifle when the rear sight is already at the lowest position? And other KZfaqrs have reported similar problems with Rossi lever actions also...

I just received a new Big Boy 45 long colt. Rear buckhorn elevation was all the way down. Called Henry and they said that is what they do for all rifles. They told me to take it to range and adjust to my liking. WHAT!!! I'll try to get some rounds on target at 25 yds and go from there. If I can, I'll move the target to 50 yds and so on. Thanks Henry for my probably going through a box of ammo because you wouldn't take the initiative on the factory adjustment!

A file with a cutting edge only on the triangle, a sight file works great and if you use it right, only on the forward stroke will deepen the notch without a problem, just work slowly and check ever so often.

Also some advice is some guys don't know how to use buckhorn sights.... try burying the front sight so u can barely see the top of the front sight in line with the rear sight. For my 357mag if I run heavy rounds(158gr) I bury my front sight, with 125gr I just line up my sights like normal.

I’ve had the same problem with my Henry’s.....now I know I’m not going insane! I’m currently using a Hi-Viz set, which has better geometry. I’m also looking at the “Bullseye” rear sight. Ideally, I like rear peep sights, but they require a much taller front sight.

A very fine educational video, sir. I know there is a good amount of people that have this sort of problem with their firearms and most can be corrected (sight-wise) in this manner. I would venture to say, that with the 'speed' of manufacture quality sometimes fails and the old art of only sending out a firearm after it is fired and zero'd is a thing of the past. One can always side step the problem by putting 'glass' or a red-dot on and then use the mechanics of the item to correct the rifle sights. Not so easy in a pistol category, so the old method of filing sights is usually used. I guess I need to ask my dentist if he can become my 'go-to guy in gunsmithing also...again, a great video!

I was going to suggest the Skinner or Williams sights myself- I believe the Williams will fit at the rear of Winchester style receivers- Marlins are easy with the solid top rib. Plus i like peep sights anyway. Buckhorns are fine for most shooting- no problem with the ones on my 2002 Win Trapper 45 at 100 yds. That is a good sensible sight mod u had done. Thanks fir letting us know. Your dentist sounds like a great guy

Troy Ortega - I remember buying two Williams that were supposed to fit Winchesters, but the ones they sent were for Marlins. I kept them because I knew that I wanted some Marlins anyway...Skinners replace the rear sights so they are much easier to manage. After the dentist ground down the rear sight - and good grief, it only took a minute - he used this flat wheel shaped diamond drill point that flattened the sight blade down like it was made of clay - that sight works so well, no need to make any further changes. Have a great day, FC

A dentist. Who would've thought? FC, I'm looking at getting my next levergun. I hear and see such mixed reviews on Rossi rifles but also see a good price point. What is your opinion in general of Rossi leverguns? I have my Henry collection and could add to it but believe I want a couple with side loading gates. Also if you have the time, speak to Winchester rifles as they are for awhile now being manufactured in Ippon?. I know the price is high but.......? Thanks for all you do. Big fans Sera and I .

tjmooremusic - Appreciate seeing your comments..!! Loyal subscribers to YT posters is like when we pump gasoline into our cars...The feeling of enablement, and "now we're going places...." is hard to put into words. When Winchester closed down M94 production, what they were saying was that they no longer could make the 94 (or model 92s) and sell it at a price that would allow them to turn profits doing so. The Marlin design (also used by Henry) was simpler with fewer parts so they are in production. I know the reviews on the Rossi 92s are up and down, but I've had nothing but good things to say about my Rossis. If you want a good shooting rifle, the Rossis are plenty good. If you want nice quality, the hexagon rifle Rossi 92s are a step up in finish compared to the regular round barrel carbines. If you want real quality and finish, the Henrys are there - as you are well aware. The current Marlins are pretty good guns - the 1894s now have cut rifling, priced around $650, US made, and shoot up a storm. I would rate today's lever guns based on quality as 1) Uberti 2) Henry 3) Japan 4) Marlin 5) Rossi. (there is a big difference) Based on performance 1) Uberti 2) Henry 3) Marlin 4) Rossi (but the difference is not a wide difference). Based on value 1) Marlin 2) Rossi 3) Henry 4) Uberti 5) Japan. These are all opinions and you will find differing opinions. I own multiple Rossis and Marlins but only one Henry (so far) and two old Winchesters. Best to ya, FC

if its shooting high wouldn't you adjust the rear sight up instead of down. so you would have to bring the barrel up to line the sights up? I thought the same thing with my hi point c9 it was shooting high so I pushed it all the way down. then I realized that and now it shoots dead on.

gun nut...I think you might have to actually draw a graphic on a piece of paper to visually see that raising rear sight forces you to bring the barrel front sight up to keep the point of aim.
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 10 жыл бұрын
gun nut - It's always confusing, but the best is to remember the old rule "Move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullets to go" So if bullets hit high - you want bullets to hit lower - therefore lower the rear sight. If hitting right, you want bullets to go left - move rear sight to left. Same rule applies to adjusting scope sights - move the scope adjustment in direction you want bullets to go. Add to confusion - for front sights - rule is "Move the front sight to the bullet hole" So if gun shoots high, move the front sight higher to the bullet hole (done by getting a new taller front sight or welding to or adding taller bead to the existing front sight). If gun shoots left, move the front sight to the left onto the bullet hole. I find I have to do a quick recall of these rules just before I start cranking on sights…. Best to ya...

Interesting,the steel on the rear buckhorn bends when you adjust the sight height making it really difficult to return to a low 25yd zero because the sight will not naturally sit back down once lifted to adjust height,have to remove the sight and put an opposite bend in it so it will sit low again,also filed some off the ramp to allow it to sit lower as it shoots high also filed some meat off the bottom of the ramp so it sits lower--------so--------will have to change front sight for a higher one to get a low 25yd zero and yes i sight so just the mearest dot of front sight is visible in lowest portion of buckhorn rear u.These sights are the reason i have bought a marbles tang sight,cheers.

FortuneCookie45LC I honestly don't know why people have to be so mean and smart mouth. I had been looking at Henry Rifles, yours or this one at least looks like a Henry so I assumed you had the manual that comes with them and that is what I was talking about. I would think anyone would know what I meant but never mind. At least you've had a good laugh today. People today, sick.
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 9 жыл бұрын
TheJhaley12 When I said "Best to ya", I meant that. I should apologize to you - I never laugh at anybody short of comedians. Laughing at people creates bitterness, hatred and anger - has no place in the society we wish to build. There are some sick people making comments today as well. ...I'm sure I looked at the paperwork that came with my Henry rifle, but there was nothing there that was special enough to put to memory, so nothing about it registered with me. I've shot lever guns for most of my adult life so you hand me a lever gun - I can use it. I do recall looking for complete disassembly instructions and there wasn't much there. When you first said "the book", I thought there was some gun book out there. No where in the video was there any mention of making any adjustment away or towards the shooter - just that high shooting lever guns either need the rear sights lowered or front sights raised to make the correction. In John McDonald's case, his problem was the rear sight was as low as it could go and still the gun was shooting high. When we are talking up and down and you are talking away and towards, it didn't register at first. We cannot lower the rear sight by doing anything that would raise it. And then the miscommunication occurred with the "book" - a book can be anything, and these days, we don't need books anymore with the internet (computer). Personally, I do have a library of books, but all the manuals are still in the gun boxes so that if I sell the gun, I can give the new owner everything. Manuals are smaller publications short of books that are item specific. I didn't make the connection until your second comment. This whole thing is a regrettable misunderstanding...sometimes when I ask for clarification on a comment, that itself causes misperceptions....we have the same problem with e-mails...The shooting community doesn't need to have this kind of thing - Have a great day

@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 8 жыл бұрын
+timber wolf -- 1) You could get a lower front sight and install it yourself. 2) Another option would be to get a receiver peep sight - those are often higher to begin with needing a taller front sight to stay on zero. But in your case the effect would be to have a taller rear sight, just what you need to get the rifle to shoot higher - no new front sight needed - might work out just fine. 3) Scope sight option. My 1895 Cowboy also shot way low, I solved the problem by putting a tactical scope on it - zeroed just fine. So you have different options.

you need a taller not lower front sight
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 7 жыл бұрын
kevin lyons - I know you know, but sometimes it's easy in print to get front and rear sights and the various adjustments unsorted. Rule with front sights is the front sight chases the bullets - so if the gun shoots high, we want a taller front sight to zero. If gun shoots low as timber wolfs does, then the sight needs to go lower to chase the bullets. The rear sight of course is the reverse. Then the rule on rear sights is we want the sight to go in the direction we want the bullets to go. If gun shoots low, we want higher so the rear sight goes taller to zero...If you were doing the adjustments, you would be OK - I've seen this at the range all the time, and with scope sights, it's really confusing to those who don't read the directions. Best to ya, FC

What I didn't mention in the video was he also opened up the notch a bit for my older eyes - didn't even take him a minute to do that - his drill is powerful and steady. Win94ae - If you took a sight picture from my rig, you might not mind. I didn't want the tall Rossi 92 sight on my long hexagonal barrel rifle. Rossi makes a taller sight (it's a lot taller) for their carbines and short rifles. But their long ones, they install the shorter sight. I wanted low sights on this 92, and this solution suited me. Certainly others could do the taller sight and if too tall, then file or grind the new front sight to suit. Either way, we're grinding on something. Viewers out there can do the Dremel thing, if they are handy...I sure wouldn't want anyone grinding or filing if they weren't...but someone not handy would damage their gun driving the front sight out also...Have a great day, and I like your YT name - says it all about your experience with a very fine firearm...

Yeah, yeah, but that lowers the position of your cheek/eyes/head, and you end up with another problem: can't get my eye low enough to place the top of the front sight at the top of the notch. Say what you want, but the real solution is putting (sticking) a few of millimeters of some material on top of that front sight.

bitfreakazoid- It's also all their little tools - I've got all these neat stainless steel tools that the dentist is always replacing - but they make great little punches and scrapers to clean all the hard to reach places like the corners inside auto pistol slides and under the top straps of revolvers where the forcing cone is - some of the little picks are sold as gun cleanings stuff, but they are really dental tools…I should do a video on them, but it's not that interesting… Best Regards

FortuneCookie45LC Hmm... interesting. Will keep this in mind. I love the octagon barrel. Would love to get a lever action with one. Random question. Do you do any cowboy action shooting? Seems like you have the guns you need.

bitfreakazoid We did some informal cowboy stuff at our range. I was getting the gear needed to start doing cowboy action, even got some clothes. But then some family things took priority, and I determined that I didn't need to compete at that time after all…Once the decision was made to hold back on that… the urge to get into competition subsided, and now, I'm very happy just shooting with the rest of the range bunch on weekends…If the whole family gets into cowboy action, that's where the real fun is - Not as much fun if one goes out solo…Best Regards...

608johnny If your dentist understands shooting, and you are a patient of his or friends of his - the dentist is cheaper - Between 5 and 10 minutes, he was done!! No charge. Best to ya

FortuneCookie45LC Stevesgunz has a really slick peep that replaces that goofy bolt safety, and you shouldn't have to replace the front sight. I put one on my model 92 45 colt. Peeps are definitely the way to go. (coming from and old Marine...)

Christopher Haist Actually, I've had this Rossi for quite a while now and the sights aren't bad on it - flat blade rear. Skinners would be barrel mounted, and not as effective as you point out. The replacement of the safety sounds intriguing - I'm going to check out Stevesgunz right away - thanks for the info...Hail to the US Marines!!

I'm about to try the skinner barrel mount on my Rossi Rio Grande. I didn't like the receiver mounted skinner very much. The receiver sight from stevez was great, especially the part where it replaces that safety! I just had to put a little dab of gooey loctite in the bottom of the hole in teh bolt to keep it from moving around.

Christopher Haist I checked out the Stevesgunz sight for the 92 Rossi and the looseness concerns me. Both reviewers and yourself note the same problem. I can't see how a loose rear sight can work out and the loctite solution doesn't seem like it's secure. I'll just keep using the factory rear sight as it is working out fine as long as my prescription glasses are doing their job...But the sight looks good - perhaps there are some KZfaq videos on this sight - I'll check that out...Best Regards

Don't you always move the back sight the way you want the bullet to go?? That's what I've done for 50 years.

correct except the ramp is bottomed out and still shooting high. I had the same problem with my 92 and I bought a taller front sight for a few bucks now I have adjustability again.

dan luckman - Absolutely so...my gun shoots high, I do want the bullets to go lower so down the rear sight goes - but in my case all the way down with the rear sight and gun still shoots high. So solution is to get a taller front sight, but my dentist friend just ground the rear sight blade lower and recut the sighting notch - took him all of 10 minutes total to do with his high speed drill and diamond drill bits. And now the gun shoots on zero. The lower sights make for a nice cheek weld and low setup...Best to ya, FC
