In this action packed 2 hour long video, I cover the theory of operation of the ZF 9HP 48 transaxle. You'll learn it's applications, service procedures, TSBs, Solenoid and clutch application, electronic control, powerflow, gearset layout and connections, and rebuilding particulars (things to watch out for). This video is part of an Automatic Transmissions course at SIU. Students watch these videos to compliment what they learn in lab when they overhaul these transmissions.

At 56:17, I think the E-clutch at the front of the trans (left side of screen) is mis-labeled as the B-clutch.

Hi, I've got a question -what happens when it shifts from 3rd to 4 gear? I always hear a kind of scratching sound when it shifts 3 to 4. What should I check first? Thank you!

You stated that the dog clutches use proportional control, but the symbols indicate that their solenoids are either on or off. The drawing makes more sense since unlike the friction clutches, the dog clutches are either engaged or disengaged with no state in between.
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, proportional meaning electrically on/hydraulically on. Not inversely proportional which is electrically on/hydraulically off.
@zroger73
@zroger73 3 жыл бұрын
@@siuautomotive, the terms for those characteristics are "normally-closed" and "normally-open", respectively. The term "proportional" means the valve can vary its position from on to off or anywhere in between based on the amount of current applied to the solenoid using pulse-width modulation. The solenoids that are used to operate the dog clutches are either energized or de-energized - they don't use proportional control. :)

Does anyone on this blog know if the transmission case design is identical between various applications? That is, it would permit any offered gearset/internal components to be installed as a full set peculiar to a desired make/model vehicle application into any empty case.

So even though the oil service between FCA and Honda is different, could you service Honda like a FCA and vise versa and be fine?

Could the reason for the difference in D clutch application in park/neutral have to do with some of these transmissions starting in 2nd gear (i.e. newer Hondas) by default?
@siuautomotive

Hmmm, possibly. I didn’t know the Honda units start in 2nd at times. Thanks for letting me know!

@@siuautomotive, I'm more knowledgeable about Hondas than other brands so I'm not sure how the other automakers do it, but the 2019+ Pilot and Passport and 2020+ Ridgeline normally start in 2nd in D(rive). Honda mentioned the change in a press release for the 2019 Pilot in the powertrain section. "When in Drive and under light-to-moderate throttle, the 9AT will now start in second gear for smoother launch and lower speed acceleration." - hondanews.com/en-US/honda-automobiles/releases/release-164e5a01acd24285b02d91d077ddbeb7-honda-pilot-arrives-with-a-new-attitude-for-2019-sporting-fresh-styling-new-technology-and-standard-honda-sensing

Hello. on the new 9HP48 units we saw a DIFFERENT torque converter. This torque converter has an additional mechanism inside. Looking at the outside of the torque converter, the modified torque converter has a massive cast iron ring on the outside, my question is, do you know about the new design of the torque converter?
@siuautomotive

Hello, I experienced a loud grinding, clunking noise that lasted a couple seconds as I was making a left onto the highway and accelerating; could that be the differential gears grinding? I didn’t feel the transmission slipping or jerking; it felt normal. Thanks I have a Honda passport 9sp
@siuautomotive
@siuautomotive 2 жыл бұрын
Just a guess, but it might have been a dog clutch engaging when parts were rotating. That's about the only thing I can think of that would grind like that and not reappear.

@@siuautomotive thanks! It was pretty loud, and as I’m recalling, it slightly vibrated the front driver and passenger floor. I was accelerating to probably 35-40 mph. My wife and I were like what was that. I thought it was a suspension noise at the time. It also sounded like rocks hitting the bottom of the car, but we were on paved asphalt. Its been a couple months and hasn’t happened again.

After reinstall in car my Cherokee 948TE shows in Drive when I turn on key, no matter what position shifter cable is placed in the trans, clicking through detents yields no change in display. Unplugging TCM from transmission makes display go blank. What are possible internal culprits?

@@siuautomotive What I want to do is take all components from a 2020 Jeep 948TE and put them into an earlier year case. Why, because my 2020 case is badly damaged (holed) where the trans mount bolts to it. And I don't know where to buy just a 2020 bare case. Earlier years are much cheaper to buy complete trans compared to 2020. Make sense? Doable?
