For myself, I like the more wistful self-reflective tone of this cover. The frustration is there, but what you’re calling upbeat to me is more of a wistfully hopeful feel. No matter how you label it, it is a phenomenal cover. Eli outdid himself and arranged for the correct singer to cover the lines that they did. Cesar opening and closing really was inspired because he looks absolutely bereft. I love the set design which is minimal but really effective to capture that feeling of aloneness .

Geoff peppered in just the right amount of low drops in this.

The others stood up, took away the stools and Layne put back the mirror in front of Cesar during the closeup on him. - And concerning your question about the blue light ring: It's not a ring light reflection, it is "real" around the light switch of the mirror. 😃

I watched the PTX version of this song, and throughout all I could think was "they didn't understand the assignment". Technically, they were fantastic. But it didn't feel genuine; it was big, bombastic, grandiose... it never gave me the impression that the singer felt like they were somehow alienated from everyone around them, which is the heart of the song. It was disappointing. VoicePlay, on the other hand, took the message of the song like an arrow to the heart. They have a knack for forcing you to listen to the lyrics, and I think it's because they themselves are always listening to them so closely, trying to suss out the emotion and impetus behind them. That kind of powerful emotional connection has always been present in VoicePlay's work, even when they were a younger group still trying to find their niche in the genre. In fact, I suspect it's only in the past few years that VoicePlay's technical mastery (which was already prodigious; don't get me wrong) has finally caught up with their ability to touch heartstrings, making them the juggernaut they currently are.

Welcome back! I literally checked today to see if I'd somehow missed some of your reactions because I'd not seen you in my subscriptions feed for a while. The little blue light is the on/off/change color light for the mirror. They left it in because it would have taken DAYS and DAYS to edit it out of every single frame it's in. They didn't cover it with tape for the shoot because that would have left a weird, dead black spot in the image. The transition from the single shot of Cesar with the blue/purple background to him in front of the mirror was done in real time, with the lighting changes and the others pulling the stools out of frame and putting the mirror in place.
