In this video we demonstrate some of the basic tooling tooling and techniques utilized under the power hammer. We also show and explain the construction of the tools themselves.
This video was recorded about a year ago when I first received my new Anyang 88 power hammer. I was fortunate to discover Haley Woodward(A blacksmith instructor at Austin Community College) was passing through on his way to teach a power hammer class so I decided to wrangle him in to show me the ropes, I decided to record the process and put it out there for anyone else out there looking to learn & see a power hammer in action.
Feel free to ask any questions in the comments and we'll do our best to answer them.

I've never blacksmithed in my life, much less own a power hammer in need of tooling. But it's hard to look away when there is a master at work! The side shots of Zack shaking his head in disbelief at how simple Haley made something look are fantastic. We've all been there!

Awesome video, Zack! Love what you do brother. Also, Haley is the Adam Savage of the blacksmith world. Amazing knowledge and loved watching him teach us. Thanks to both of you.

I learned so many things, from the ability to purchase steel balls on the Internet to how to use a power hammer, though I've never done so. I also have learned that harder balls may be an issue when the hammer blows fall, so better to use milder steels and have fault tolerance. Great vid, brother!

At 34:43 don't open the die after sinking the bar to dress the edges of the depression. Simply put a larger diameter bar in it drive it down to create relief while it's still hot. You can use a larger ball after sinking the smaller ball same thing

I dont understand what heatreating mild steel does?......there is no carbon in it so it can't get harder
@ZHFabrications
@ZHFabrications 2 жыл бұрын
It's debateable, good mild steel is typically 1018, which means it has .18% carbon, so theoretically it does harden albeit not as significantly as say 1045(which I use on my hammers) or anything higher.
@westweld
@westweld 2 жыл бұрын
@@ZHFabrications it has maybe .18% definitely not 18% I have a hardness tester ive just never been able to get 1018 any harder
