In the world of Steam Preservation and Heritage Railways serious derailments are something not often thought about. The need for robust safety systems and staff training are just as important as any large commercial railway.
On the 25th January 1996, Zig Zag suffered its first major incident involving a passenger train. Fortunately, no one was injured and the lessons learnt from that day enabled the railway to improve it's safety systems and crew training.
This video, compiled by ZZR member Trevor Ashby, chronicles the re-railing exercise undertaken by Zig Zag members with assistance from the State Rail Authority NSW Breakdown Gang (Lithgow).
Getting 1072 back on to the tracks and effecting repairs to the permanent way continued into the night. The following morning after re-certification of the track by the Department of Transport, services resumed on the railway for Australia Day.

Such a pity that all is so easily negative action compared to this positive action and outcome! Great team work at play on this large scale model railway, run by serious enthusiasts , Cheers

This vid maybe long but it captures the experience very well. The lack of dialog is the strongest feature of the video. The silence gives a feeling of great sadness. Almost like some large creature that has met its demise. I have experienced a similar feeling at some of the fatal crashes I have attended. What distinguishes this disaster is that the iron beast is saved by diligent skilled and dedicated workers or lovers of the beast!! One odd thing is that the train is heading in a different direction than then in the beginning of the video. Thanks for sharing this with the world. I have watched this vid several times.

What an unique experience to watch. The only disappointment after watching the wheel combinations refitted to the tracks was that you did not show the rescued vehicle being put back into the works depot. Great viewing and we still have many memories of making the trip from top to bottom on several occasions during the late 8p0's and early 90's.

"A railway zig zag or switchback, is a railway operation in which a train is required to switch its direction of travel in order to continue its journey. While this may be required purely from an operations standpoint, it is also ideal for climbing steep gradients with minimal need for tunnels and heavy earthworks." -- Wikipedia

As Thomas rounded the bend, he saw the fat controller standing in the middle of the railway line, gazing at the sky like a fool. Thomas knew there was no chance to stop in time, all he could do was blow his whistle as hard as he could, and hurl obscenities at the fat obstruction. But it was too late, he barely got out a good solid FU when he collided full speed head on with the fat sky gazing trumpet. Thomas was expecting to be covered in controller goo and end up looking like the Halloween special, but the fat controllers enormous belly absorbed the force with barely a ripple. Thomas however, was not so lucky. His twisted body lay on it's side with steam escaping from places he was fairly sure it shouldn't be, his bogies were no longer attached and his wheels were all over the place. Thomas was not amused as he noticed the fat controller was now laughing and pointing at him - what's so funny ? Thomas hurled some more abuse at him but that only seemed to make him laugh even harder. It took hours of terribly hard work to haul Thomas's carcass back onto his wheels and back on the tracks, but eventually the brave and determined workers did it, and Thomas was towed back to the locomotive sheds, arriving just in time for supper. He noticed that some of the other engines were sniggering and asked, rather angrily, what they thought was so funny ? Henry couldn't hold it any longer and burst into fits of hysterics, whilst Edward told Thomas that they had put some magic mushrooms in the fat controller's tea that morning 'for a laugh'. For a laugh ! exclaimed Thomas ... you think this is funny ? I was off my bloody wheels !!! Gordon chirped in "so was he from what I've heard" Henry rolled on the floor waggling his wheels in the air laughing uncontrollably. Thomas smiled - he was beginning to see the funny side. "Apparently" said Percy, "he wondered off into the desert looking for his spirit guide or something. If he doesn't get his enormous ass back here pretty soon he's gonna be dingo fodder I reckon" Thomas chuckled, "that'll teach the pudding guzzling bell end" he said, then started making dingo howling noises whilst Annie made slurping noises and all the engines laughed 'till they wet themselves.

@@tonyforno3387 No, probably the best way would be to use the rail line to bring in a wrecking train. A crane with electro magnet can lift off pieces of scrap and crane it into trucks behind. Teams of torchmen slice into the loco and other debris to liberate new scrap. Doing it this way removes the need for really heavy lifting gear.

You’d be surprised at what young people are doing in rail preservation today. I recently enjoyed a trip with a group who have dozens of hard-working volunteers in their teens and twenties, and the trip was well-organised and run by these young folks. People in their thirties are strong on the ground too. So, it’s unfair to make silly generalisations.

NSW Breakdown Gang use exactly same gear we use on UK breakdown , even packing looks same , only thing thought was bit risky was standing next to beam while using push pull jack .We always keep clear as once had Loco catch the rail , so loco couldn't move and the push pull jack throw been out sideways pretty rapidly would bust your leg if it hit you. Great work by breakdown gang though is such confined space ,well using jack on its side to right loco ,them jacks are heavier than they look , its risky job re railing seen few Loco,s waggons fall off jacks ,just got make sure all clear when jacking/moving Look,s interesting the ZIg Zag was out in NSW 2006 in Katoomba , don,t think its far from ZigZag regret not going on it

Surely some form of block working or single line token system was in use? If that was the case it would take at least two people breaking the rules for such a crash to occur. Doesn't give you much faith in the training of staff or the operating rules! I know from experience that the clearing up job is one of the worst ones on the railway. Much better to have a good rule book and to ensure that staff are well versed in obeying the rules!

Also they should have taken all the stuff off the wagon, all the sleepers and other stuff ( l think I see another jack !) To start with, you use what you got. If track jacks are all you have, then that is what you use. I have used track jacks for a lot of things other than strictly track. I have seen a lot of railroaders do the same thing. Track jacks are ubiquitous on a railroad, track crews, b&b crews, car crews, in shops, etc.
