The fact that Zidane turned a team that struggled to qualify for the World Cup into a team that made it all the way to the final just shows how important he was. What was so great about Zidane was he retired in 2006 but yet he was still at his peak then

he wasnt at his peak lol. Sure, he was immense at the 2006 WC, but a world cup is a short tournament you can prepare for with a 1 month boot camp prior (you know, the kind that all the WC participants go through). Zidane was declining in his last club seasons for Madrid - he was still important but not as magical as he used to be. Same, for instance, was Rivaldo - absolutely unstoppable at the 2002 WC but his 2001/02 season was mediocre by his standards and he declined further after the WC.

This was still a young Spain team. Spain used to lost a lot in knockout rounds before 2008. They had some stars, but they were not as big as countries like Brazil, Italy or France.

I was at this game in Hannover, and I will never forget the Spanish fans crying in the toilets. They were heartbroken - for that reason alone I was thrilled they won the World Cup in 2010, just four years later.
