This is so helpful, I was worried about clean up because I've got multiple things to prime and have to do it over a few days . And I was going to buy foam rollers even though I've got perfectly good regular rollers! Thanks for sharing these tips!

Zinsser BIN is one of my go to primers and always have some in my products box on a job. I have been storing my BIN brushes in exactly the same way - since you told me your method a year ago! A little meths in an old Big Wipes tub works a treat. Thanks for the roller tip.

Hi any tips, I primed loads of skirting board with BIN. Problem is there is a strong smell. Catches my throat, still pretty strong even after 2 top coats. Any ideas to neutralise the smell?

what is your favourite matt emulsion to use for yourself, in order of 1,2,3 dulux, crown, leyland, macphersons, etc......???
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Well, it all depends if you want a vinyl matt or a none vinyl and what level of sheen. Some matt paints are dead flat and others have a slight sheen. But what I use at the minute is Valspar sometimes Fortress, any of those others you mentioned as long as you buy it in the trade they are also good.

Hi, what this paint. What's the benefit for using pure bristle paint brush for oil paints? You mentioned it but didn't say why ? Thanks

I need to cover some bleed through on drawer fronts painted with light coloured chalk paint. I've been advised to try BIN primer, but folk say it is very hard to paint. Is the spray version easier to use ?
@PaintingandDecorating5 жыл бұрын
Not used the spray but I can imagine it's easier to get a better finish with. B.I.N. primer. It can be very difficult to apply by brush on large areas. You can use a roller it may leave a little orange peel. But practise first on some old wood the thing with B.I.N. is you have to get it on fast then leave alone it dries super fast.
@melissawheeler73745 жыл бұрын
Yes the aerosol is much better
@adriansandry27834 жыл бұрын
I have used both. The advantage of the paint is that sometimes I want the first coat to soak in deeper than usual and for that I can add a little more meths to it. Again, very occasionally I want some that is a little thicker and so that is easy to make by pouring a little in a kettle and letting it stand for a while. I'm never without a tin of BIN!
@micksmith33523 жыл бұрын
Can i ask you mate do you use coverstain or bin when painting over varnish and can cover stain be diluted ?
@PaintingandDecorating3 жыл бұрын
Best not to dilute if possible because you weaken the special properties of the paint. All depends what am doing and what paint I've already got. If you do thin sometimes best to apply two coats.. thanks

Have you got any tips for eliminating the flashing that can happen with BIN through emulsion? I have been following your channel for some time and know you like a drop of the old BIN so thought i'd ask here first. Thanks for all of the great videos you have produced as well I have found so much of it extremely helpful.

That sponge roller seemed to suck it all up and not really release much. What about tight mohair gloss rollers?
@PaintingandDecorating4 жыл бұрын
Not sure it all depends if the methalayted spirit melts them.

Hi what best to use for knots on fresh door casings
@PaintingandDecorating5 жыл бұрын
Two Knotting solution then B.I.N. best to make sure.... some still come back all depends on the moisture content of the wood as well.... wood should be at a certain moisture % before painting really...

I have painted over some filled holes on the wall with Zinsser B. I. N. because they were flashing, thinking it will help and it will be easy to sand down so I wasn't very careful when applying and added a lot. . Boy, how wrong I was! It is not easy to sand down at all, and it is flashing even more. It made the wall like mirror now. Is there anything I can fix it? Emulsion doesn't want to stick to it properly. I didn't realise it wasn't really meant to be applied on walls until I made that mistake.
@PaintingandDecorating5 жыл бұрын
You can apply it to walls... but you have to be careful... if the wall is rolled you have to roll the B.I.N. primer on as well to achieve same texture... also it will seal the wall totally so cheap emulsion will soak in around the patch and it will always stand out... you need to sand the whole wall down then using a roller apply some B.I.N. over your patch a perfect even coat. Then two coats of a washable matt.
@MrZSimko5 жыл бұрын
@@PaintingandDecorating Yeah, I didn't use a roller, used a brush. Never thought it will be so hard to sand down either. Thanks for the advice. I'll try to sand it down some more. Does Farrow And Ball Modern emulsion classify as washable emulsion?

@@MrZSimko Farrow And Ball Modern emulsion A durable and versatile matt finish, Modern Emulsion is washable and mould resistant, making it especially suited to bathrooms and kitchens as well as busy areas. So true about the foam rollers. They start to disintegrate after a few minutes.
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the methylated spirit affects them. Have found a small emulsion roller for behind radiators works fine.
@JohnOsCreations6 жыл бұрын
I found it was just the actual Zinnser bin primer that disintegrated the foam. Any tips on applying zinnser bin primer to 16 foot long tongue and groove sheeting 100mm wide. Its seems to dry quick. Thanks
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Zinsser B.I.N. primer is methylated spirit based. You need to work fast and in small areas so you do not build up thick edges do not go back over to much. Keep it thinned down and sometimes two coats is best.

I must admit i've lobbed brushes away in the past when they've gone hard after using BIN so that's handy to know. What i do now though is keep a short handled brush permanently in a 2.5L tin of BIN with just enough paint in it to cover the bristles . I just top it up when required from another tin , it can get a bit stodgy on the bottom though so needs a brush out on something before use. How much meths do you keep in the yellow tub ?
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Only a small amount of methylated spirits is needed and just top it up.

This video really shows the watery consistency of this primer. I'm using this primer over some removed wallpaper and have been making a mess entirely when using a roller or brush. Can you give some advice? What am I doing wrong? The roller flings the primer all over the place and I get very very little coverage using it. The primer is also much thicker at the bottom of the can. I have taken it to be shaken twice and stirred it vigorously with the stirring sticks. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
treysmithorama Not easy stuff to use and it needs stirring up a lot to mix well and stirring in between when using. The trick is to get the speed you use it at just right. Too fast will go everywhere too slow and it drys and drags. Do not over spread work small areas and move just fast enough. Took me a while getting the hang of it. Hope some of that helps. Will do some more videos. Thanks.
@mackhomie66 жыл бұрын
Yeah. If it is noticeably thicker at the bottom, it is *not* stirred. That is your problem.
@treysmithorama6 жыл бұрын
Man I stirred and stirred and stirred again this weekend. It maybe wasn't "quite" as bad but still splattered all over when using the roller. It still ran a good bit with my sponge brush, and had overall little coverage compared to a gallon of paint.
@1stclasspaintingdecorating3386 жыл бұрын
Great BIN tips..... Hi treysmithorama, use zinnser gardz over removed wallpaper, it it designed to seal in the paste residue and also penetrate and harden plaster/filler etc, easy to use, water cleanup.. zinsser bin sounds like overkill for your sitution (however that is only a guess going by the fact you said going over removed wallpaper. Hope that help for the future reference.

@PaintingandDecorating2 жыл бұрын
It's alcohol..
@aviii892 жыл бұрын
@@PaintingandDecorating Ok, perhaps I am just imagining it. But when I read the back it says to use gloves and a mask, and that prolonged exposure to the fumes can cause headaches and dizzyness. It looks like it's more than just alcohol, but I am definitely not an expert... so what do I know! And it was a genuine question, I wasn't trying to tell you what to do! I'd much prefer not wearing a mask and gloves while painting!
