Zion National Park Angels Landing Hike - Chains to the Summit! Not For The Faint of Heart!

One of the best hikes in Zion National Park is Angels Landing. It's a 5-mile round-trip with 1,500' elevation gain that's not for the faint of heart! Not only is there a serious set of switchbacks called Walters Wiggles (named after the guy who designed them, who was obviously a bit sadistic), but also the famous chains to the summit! Can you handle it?!
Footage we shot for this video is included in an awesome segment about the national parks in Season 3, Episode 5 of The RVers. That episode premieres on Discovery on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 8am Eastern & Pacific, 7am Central, and 9am Mountain time. Set your alarm, or your DVR! Or you can check out our page all about The RVers for lots of other ways to watch the show.

I remember when y'all were there and your jacks were frozen to the ground. I told hubby then we needed Snap pads! I have been out to the RV many times and to this day haven't measured for the pads. LOL But we haven't been to many places the last 2 yrs. We rescued a Chihuahua with heartworms in 2019 and had to keep her calm. The we all know what happened in 2020. Our closest & favorite spot was closed until October. That was time to winterize so we didn't bother to unwinterize. LOL We have a few trips planned this year. There have been several life changing stumbles in the last year. Our youngest son's wife moved out and files for divorce. They have 2 small kids that we keep during the day. That thru a kink into things with our son not knowing anyone that could keep the kids if we leave. So we worked around the kids shool schedules. We were always their free day care and took them with us before. Now with the divorce mommy says they can't go overnight with us. WTH??? We have had them for 3 weeks at a time if they needed to go out of state or the country. Now our oldest son has bladder cancer. We hope his surgery today was a success and his outcome is good, but who knows what is in store. I just love watching things like this on different channels so we know what is out there for us to see. I know I would never get hubby up to that summit. It amazes me the places that do not have barriers to keep people from falling off. LOL HUGS~Donna

Absolutely fantastic! We love Zion and their trails, but skipped Angels Landing because of how bad my fear of heights is getting (even videos are starting to make me dizzy lol) This was the best way for me to experience this and I love the line probably named after the sadistic guy who built them lol. Take care and safe travels!

Hey Kenny & Sabrina! We left out the scariest part of the hike to avoid triggering anyone, where you walk along a knife edge with a 1,500' drop down either side. Sounds like that was a good call! Hope you two are doing well and traveling safe.

All shows on commercial television have... wait for it... commercials. If they bother you, and you don't have a DVR to skip them, the show is available commercial-free on PBS stations, and on a multitude of streaming platforms, including iTunes, Amazon and Google Play. They even contain bonus content in place of the commercials.

Thanks for taking me along guys! It's been years since my wife and I have done angels landing and Zion. The first time my wife and I went we had just come off of a 14 hour a day 73 straight day work marathon. The size of the place is deceiving to the first time viewer. We rented a dry suit and did the narrows as well. What a great place! Thanks for sharing. BTW, I am really enjoying learning my new DJI Zoom!

What a beautiful hike. And you did it carrying your sunscreen, water, snack bars, gloves, extra socks PLUS four pounds of camera gear. All without breaking a sweat or even breathing hard. I salute you! Love Zion NP as well but have not done that hike yet. The change in weather (clear skies: cloudy: rain & thunder) is probably quite common. (I'm thinking the further you travel to get there the more common it is.)
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 3 жыл бұрын
LOL! If Walter's Wiggles were much longer, Peter would have been carrying me, too! 😂 And there was plenty of sweat and hard breathing... 1,500' of elevation gain over a relatively short distance will do that to ya! 😉 And you're right... a turn in weather like that is likely in direct proportion to how far you've come to do it (and how tired you are for the hike back), LOL!
@johninYVR
@johninYVR 3 жыл бұрын
@@RVgeeks Hi John. If "there was plenty of sweat and hard breathing" then you must have taken time to sip some water, enjoy the view, adjust the camera gear, had another sip of water and only then turned on the cameras. In the video it sounds like this was your fifth or sixth time (am I close?) and you both looked to be in great shape and not struggling much for breath.

OK, guys, please don't take this the wrong way, but I have seen this hike many times done by the "younger" crowd and felt that, maybe, because I don't fit into that category, that I should not try it. Now, I even probably have a few years on you guys, but now, seeing you complete the climb, I might just have to give it a try.

We’re in our early 50s (John) and early 60s (Peter), don’t exercise nearly as much as we should, and have no problem whatsoever on this hike. And even if you got to Scout Lookout and felt like you didn’t want to go the rest of the way, it’s still a grand view from there. But it is only a half mile further to the top. 😉

@@RVgeeks I'm 57 and the only exercise I get is taking my dog out for his walks. I will add, that at my job, I'm on my feet all day and have been tracking 10 mile days (12-hour shifts), so, maybe I'm getting more exercise than I think.

You can handle this hike no problem! If you ever get the chance, it’s incredible. We have heard that crowds are insane right now with all the interest in people getting outdoors and the summer season here. We went in early November, and it was much less busy. We suggested if you do go during the summer, first thing in the morning would probably be best.

Went up past Scout's Lookout, but turned around at the THIRD gap in the chains. They seemed very haphazardly placed, some easy sections had them, and some knarly ones did not. Nothing to do with the height, I've been to Yosemite Falls, Mount Elbert, and Thorong La. One week after I was there (Nov.2019) a park employee fell to her death, the ninth person to do so. Since then, three more have died. When will the NPS pony up and complete the chains, so that this climb will be safer for all?

Hi, RV Geeks (Peter and John) I read the 5-mile round trip, but, what is the approx time to do the trip? I imagine the best time to do the hike is early AM; any suggestions? Looks SOOOOOO darn good!! I'm mid-70's; do you foresee any problems for me? Y'all Be Safe!
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymond! We'd say that going early in the morning is likely a good idea to beat the crowds we've been hearing about. Or go in the shoulder season like we did (early November). If it's not too crowded, we'd guess allowing 3-4 hours is reasonable, but probably on the longer end of that, since it's so gorgeous at the top that you may want hang out for a while! As far as any age limit... the great thing about hiking in the mountains, as opposed to canyon hiking, is that the return trip is all downhill. So if you reach Scout Lookout for example, and want to pack it in, you'll get really great views, and an easier trip back down.

@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 3 жыл бұрын
Lots of heavily traveled trails in national parks have paved sections for various reasons. This one has only two... the one cut into the side of the cliff above the canyon floor just before Refrigerator Canyon, and Walter's Wiggles. The rest of it is in a natural state, which in this case is sandy at the start, and rock up at the top. And by the way, steeply inclined pavement is still strenuous!
