This is my review of the ZMF Auteur open back headphones. These are a bio-cellulose dynamic set of cans in the upper hi-fi to summit-fi price bracket sporting a hand crafted design. In this video I talk about my experience with these cans.

Loving my auteurs and completely agree with the 650 comparison. Biggest difference between the 2 in my opinion is 650 is more intimate and the auteur is everything a few feet back and around you. But the timbre and neutral-ish presentation are very nice

Hey DMS, thanks for all your awesome reviews. Appreciate your opinions and analysis very much. Couple questions if I may: I have the Focal Elex and really enjoy them. I’m considering the ZMF Auteur because they’re beautiful and I’ve heard great things. You compared both headphones as upgrades from the HD650, but which would give an advantage or preference to? Are they mostly similar that it wouldn’t be worth having both? Thanks

What headphone would be best suited for me? Im looking for the most flat neutral sounding headphone to use for both music and movies. I want little to no coloration. To hear the sound as accurately as possible. I was deciding between the Sennheiser HD 800 S and the HD 820 because i have heard they have the best sound stage of any headphone and were incredibly detailed. And were neutral. Ive heard that the HD 820 are more colored than the HD 800 S. Which is not something i want. I want something that is as close to accurate as possible as i want my headphones as a general use headphones i use for any kind of listening. While being able to get as much detail out of them as possible.

The 800 and 800s are unfortunately VERY FAR from flat. The response is more V-shaped. This is because of their interpenetration of "flat" is different. As are many companies. The zmf auteur is slightly warm but its the closest thing i've heard to a true flat headphone so far. The only thing they would need is a little more treble extension (air) to be truly flat.

I herd these at RMAF, and I found they had a hard time competing in their price range. Now maybe that was due to music selection, but I found they don't compete with Mr. Speakers, Focal, Sony and Audeze. I talked to Zach and got a feel for what they test with, and with that I mind I totally agree on the vocal intimacy.

very well done... I just suggest you to try to change the LD MK2 tubes, switch to 6HM5 (tall one) + Marconi (alias Sylvania) 6SN7 GTB Tall Boy... both types NOS, in USA they are quite cheap and the step in sound quality from LD is really big! ... that is from my direct experience as it as I'm using my LD MK2 right now. (to use the 6SN7 you need to buy an adapter, easy from ebay... MK2 setting: EF95 and gain = 5) about your review... again... well done! bravo!

This or Focal Clear?
@jurumal
@jurumal 6 жыл бұрын
Bakul G I heard both the Auteur and Clear at an audio boutique last week and the Clear is closer to my preferences vs. the Auteur. Auteur was too warm sounding to my ears, lacking some sparkle in the top end, while having a glare somewhere in the highs. The Clear also have a slight harshness somewhere in the highs too but sounded cleaner overall. Auteur has body to the sound, specifically in the bass, but Clear, while thinner sounding, had more detail throughout the spectrum.
@jurumal
@jurumal 6 жыл бұрын
To me, the Auteur was lacking in treble resolution vs. the Clear out of the same amp. However, treble resolution improved significantly after pairing the Auteur with the Hugo2. I’m still inclined to choose the Clear overall however.

No... objectively id not even call it an upgrade. Its the wrong term... Its different. The LCD 2 is not nearly as neutral. And the ZMF is also more withdrawn in the midrange... aka bigger stage, less intimate. Its simple physics. A tube basically does the same. more bass, more high treble and less upper midrange and lower treble. = Soundstage and a warm yet detailed sound. The HD650 basically is almost perfect if you want something neutral yet slightly warm. Only problem is the slight uneven treble and the bass roll off. Which doesnt really affect sound that much, because subbass is not the tight bass, but the wolly bass that if overdone fucks up everything just like too much boost in the 160Hz to 250Hz range.

@@m.g.i2480 Any idea if any ZMF outperforms LCD-2 in bass quality and extension? The texture and speed and clarity of the low-end on LCD-2 has me ready to purchase those just for those times I want to hear that level of quality low end, but I'd consider ZMF if any of that line can outperform Audeze low end.

Elears have a strange signature that works for some people, but absolutely not for others :) I recommend trying them out tho, I preferred the elears over the HD800S with a large margin. I can't put it in audiophile words, but they sound incredibly quick and powerful even with the shittiest amps^^

I own both the 6xx and the Auteur- mentioning them in the same breath is offensive to the Auteur. I love the 6xx and it will always have a place in my small collection, but the Auteurs do literally everything better, many things 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 better. The overall tone/timbre of the Auteurs put them on a completely different class, they sound so much more alive and IN the music. The detail/dynamics/tonal balance/soundstage, everything are just on another level. The 6xx sound flat by comparison, which is more praise for the Auteurs than a knock on the 6xx.

There's no way ZMF is capable of engineering anything at a high technical level. Look at Skylar Gray's explanation of the tech in the Audioquest Nighthawk that is on InnerFidelity's channel. Also, look at some of the cool tech that goes in to Audeze's high end models. Those things have some crazy tech that I just doubt these have. I could be wrong. For 1900, these are a handcrafted aesthetics-oriented product. I don't mean to insult ZMF here, hopefully they will be at RMAF to listen to. But that price tag is due to the unavoidable hardships of a small production operation like rare high quality materials and manual labor.

Your take on the Auteurs having less intimacy than the 650 is not accurate. In fact the improved upper frequency detail and air enhance intimacy. Compare Lorena Mckennit on both and you tell me which gives you are more intimate performance. Spanish guitars and night plazas for example. HD 650 is slightly more coherent In the heart of the midrange. Intimacy is not about smaller less focused staging, imaging or depth or softening and slight loss if high frequency info. Sorry to rain on your 650 parade. It's a great headphone...especially when fully modded. But a burned in Blackwood Auteur pretty much clobbers it even on it's own turf! The more it burns in and the more I listen I find the Auteur to be more accurate even in the mids. I run it on Silver Gold OCC...that may have something to do with that!

I don't know, but he has 6.5K subs I doubt there are giving him a headphone. ZMF dosen't need him to garner sales. Sure the comparison to the HD560 may be a bit sill considering the price gap. Honestly I don't take his reviews that seriously, but it dosen't mean he a shill. I don't believe he is. But you entitled to your opinion. Everyone on KZfaq like to question the reviewer's integrity if they don't like something. Criticize him for the lack of information, or silly comparison or even say he's a bad reviewer, questioning his integrity is a bit of a stretch. But that's the way thing are done now days.

@kaleisbased 6 жыл бұрын
The whole purpose of the comparison is to serve as way to express how the headphones sound. He isn't saying that the Auterus are better than the 650s and for that reason you should buy it. He isn't comparing the two headphones as direct competitors. All he is trying to do is give the viewer insight as to how they sound. "the fact that he is comparing a $1600 headphone directly to a $200 headphone and then tells everyone to buy this $1600 headphone without telling us why it is $1400 better" Although he does suggest that it would be an upgrade, he isn't telling you buy it. He's just stating that the Auteurs are better than the 650s. And to be frank, I don't think any company would want their $1600 flagship to be compared to a pair of $200 headphones.

lol 1600 get real. This is exactly what is wrong, not right, with this hobby. I don't care how amazing the build is/ looks are like. Frankly I don't like how it looks at all. And you shouldnt recommend others go buy it if you aren't doing that yourself. Did you buy it for 1600, yourself? I'll guess no. I'd also guess your review wouldn't be so positive if you had to pay the $1,600. Absolutely absurd.

I mostly agree and upvoted, but $1600 isn't at the level of being atrocious/unacceptable. There are flagships at double price. That's truly sickening. Anything more than $2k is just a joke, sorry...flagships included. I'm fine with my HD650 for now. Hopefully prices come down and we get well-made harman response curve headphones after 5 years.

I don't care how much materials and manufacturing costs. I'm not buying materials, I'm buying headphones. Who cares how a headphone looks? Sound and comfort and durability is where its at. Oh yeah, and a price tag that isn't literally out in space just because other manufacturers are doing it, too. For example, the DT770 is a perfectly well built headphone that will last years (decades in some cases) if well taken care of. It doesn't require hundreds of dollars to figure out how to make a comfortable, functional headphone. In fact, I think you're the one who needs to do the research on material costs. Big whoop, they use some wood, some leather, a bit of metal. They are probably less comfortable than a DT770 with all these "premium material" choices.
