Zoë Keating started playing the cello at the age of eight. She was a serious and promising young student until her teen years where she grew increasingly terrified of performing. Afraid that she couldn't cope with the pressure of a music career, Zoë walked away from her scholarships, received a liberal arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College and spent her 20's as a software developer in San Francisco during the dot com boom.
It was while improvising with a rock band for fun that Zoe rediscovered the joy of playing music and found that she was able to perform without fear. Zoë started experimenting with cello amplification and improvising increasingly for large audiences.
More than a decade later, she is known for both her use of technology, which she uses to sample her cello on stage, and for her maverick approach, selling well over 75,000 albums without the assistance of a record label.
She has been profiled on NPR's "All Things Considered" and has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. She serves on the boards of the San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy, the Magik Magik Orchestra and CASH Music, a nonprofit organization that builds open source digital tools for musicians and labels.
Zoë composes and lends her music to film, television, dance , commercials, etc. She has lent her talents to a wide range of artists including, Imogen Heap, Tears for Fears, Amanda Palmer, Paolo Nutini, Thomas Dolby, and many many more.
