This is good...except for the "endangered planet" hypothesis, and spewing of the obligatory Doom Narrative, wherein we are "depleting" the Earth's resources. I doubt the survivability of the human species far more than I doubt the survivability of the planet. The real threat is our addiction to the materialist, mechanistic command & control model of human society via coercive political states-the myth that the solution to every problem is another political law. If we wipe ourselves out, the planet will shake it off and go on just fine without us.

For those whose concept of communication is a game of one-upsmanship -- using skepticism for skepticism's sake masquerading as a demand for evidentiary "objective truth" -- the minimum criterion for what they will agree constitutes "evidence" is a moving target. They minimize, deprecate, or simply reject anything that they're unwilling to recognize. Their purpose in communicating is not to understand; rather, it is to win arguments. They're certain they're not confused or mistaken. "But here is this fact...", you say. Nope...that's not a fact, that's a "subjective opinion" -- their pseudo-civilized version of an _ad hominen_ attack. It's a tactic that handily sidesteps the truth that *_all_* facts -- indeed, everything we call _knowledge_ -- is ultimately subjective. Nothing can be known without a knower; nothing can be perceived without a perceiver; nothing can be observed without an observer. Apparently, they hope no one will notice that intellectual sleight of hand. Then they turn around and deny the very objectivity they were demanding by flip-flopping into an absurdity like, "You can't prove that I exist." Right. But that blows your demand for some kind of "objective proof " out of the water. You can't prove that I exist either, so why are you so adamant about arguing with someone you just made up? If you don't want to continue the discussion because either one or both of us might be a fiction we've made up, you only have to say so, and I'll talk to someone else who's interested in actually communicating. When I encounter such people, I save myself the trouble of trying to explain. You cannot communicate with people who insist on placing the discussion within a framework in which they are the sole arbiters of truth. It's a game in which mutual respect is not a rule of engagement, and mutual understanding is not a goal, much less a preferred outcome. It is inconceivable to them that there is anything they could be missing, or any prejudice in their presumption of intellectual superiority. Such arrogance is impenetrable. You can't communicate with someone who doesn't want to understand.

By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with primary consciousness will probably have to come first.

Not only is there NO EVIDENCE, but it's the same new age word salad of nonsense heard over & over for years. NOT ONE of the many people that I know (educated, older upper middle class New Yorkers living upstate) has been TRULY helped physically by any of these holistic practices & they all (5 of them) are even part of the "holistic health community" for crying out loud! One of them has life long heart issues & refuses to see regular specialists beyond the initial tests he had taken. I have watched him worry about that & his on going rectal issues for years now & I always just want to turn to him & say " why do you keep repeating all of these (mostly well meaning) practitioners if it isn't working!?" Look, I agree that the AMA are largely corrupt & push unnecessary medicines on patients, but all one has to do is do their research using word of mouth to find a practitioner (granted, no easy feat) who actually gives a shite & AT LEAST try methods that are evidence based. I am so fed up with the bullshite of these wishful, & magical thinking practices that I'm going to move out of Upstate NY. It's just way way too flakey & granola to take anymore.
