Zoe you’re literally saving me, I’ve always been a very artistic person, and my biggest passion is fashion, but my parents didn’t allow me to go to art high school (I’m Italian so the school system is probably a little different, you can choose what you study since high school, which usually consists of 5 years), and I went for human sciences instead (psychology, sociology etc..), in the past 5 years I’ve completely neglected my drawing skills for the amount of work load I had from school, but next year I’m going to uni and I’m set, I’m studying fashion design. I’m quite rusty, but your videos are a life saver, I’ve been drawing every single day for the past two weeks and I already see a massive difference. Thank you so much!

I really appreciate this perspective. I usually go, 'Oh, I want to learn watercolors? Let me look up a watercolorist.' It's good to get the overview for someone who is using these products as a means to an end (and the same end as me) - and not as an artistic end-in-themselves.

41:43 That entirely imitated conversation you had with yourself talking about the notcher is probably the funniest thing I have heard in a year. And the fact you end it with "whatever" is the piece de resistance. AND THEN, you go from a calm conversational tone and jump to your description of the bunny punch where your voice is very dramatic and booming, and the screen is suddenly covered with this intimidating behemoth of metal. There's whiplash in feeling calm and collected and suddenly very threatened by a giant bunny punch, and it is hilarious. Thank you so much for your excellently informing videos.

Must be a while since Zoe used a “home” sewing machine. There must be at least a dozen different kinds of bobbins used by different brands of “home” sewing machines and sometimes by different models of the same brand. Determining which kind you need for your machine is anything but simple, unless you consult your owners manual. Read the manual before shopping.

I remember one teacher told us to use cheap dollar store makeup to get rich unique colors. She was a sub for our regular professor. We learned all types of "tricks" because she kept it real. Skip ahead some 17+yrs and low and behold, I watched a documentary on Karl Lagerfield, and guess what, THE MAN WAS USING MAKEUP PALETS from the drug store! I was mad, sad, and vindicated all at the same time. My school had a list of supplies and wouldn't accept any of your work that used any other brand. They always were the most expensive items that most would have to sell blood to get. Thank you for keeping it real and affordable.

Nice video and I learned a bit. I'm still trying to get past drawing stick figures or flat garments. I usually draw a rudimentary design and hand it to my kid to work with wnd he returns with what I envisioned. Painting is easy for me. I know that pattern notchers are what we are all supposed to use but its easier for me to mark the fabric with colored art pencils.

@@zoehongteaches I don't notch the fabric and due to another airhead moment, should have said that mention that I use protruding triangles in 1s, 2s, and 3s and them mark it away from cut fabric, that way I still know what I'm doing after serging the edges before sewing it all together.

Yo Zoey! I’ve gotten a few of the books you mentioned and some drips and drabs of supplies (like that pin magnet abs scissors), and my birthday was on monday so my boyfriend and mom chipped in and I got a nice little sewing machine so now I can’t wait for the weekend!! so excited! Thanks for all your help - especially with the books - that swatches one took forever to get to South Africa but it’s the best thing ever! like an adult version of the baby books with fun texture patches and peekaboo lift here and see how it stretches in this direction haha. I keep switching between reading a bit, but now I wanna practice a seam, but what about this book 😸 My credit card hates me but i’m living my best life! Also I think some of the concepts in the books would be tricky but then I go oh yeah this is what that vid was about :)

and I didn’t click that the tracing wheel was to go from fabric to paper - thought people used those to make duplicates of bought patterns onto say brown paper or something (but then you’d be perforating and eventually destroying the shop pattern). So obvious now but Ive wondered about this for years 😹

I’m definitely not considering to start a fashion illustration career, but was plain curious about Adobe illustrator (I now have the cut down version for the iPad). I have used various graphic programs before: Paint Shop Pro (pc) and Procreate (iPad) and a little bit of Adobe Photoshop (pc) and to me they are all basically the same (eg working with layers, creating vectors, pen, pencil and eraser tools, colour manipulation) except of course the tools are located in different places and each program/app has their own set of special features. So after watching this video I decided to try out Illustrator and with my previous experience of other similar software I have figured my way around most the tools in minutes and it is very intuitive and easy. Therefore I question why you specifically need previous experience in Illustrator to get such a job?
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 2 ай бұрын
I don't have any experience with Paint Shop but Procreate and Photoshop are raster format software programs. Illustrator is vector. You need to learn to do vector drawings in illustrator.

My mother was a multimedia artist and I have inherited her materials (Zero of her skills or knowledge.) Much to my regret she is no longer here to help me get started. First, I'm still on the color wheel thing. Basic primary color affiliations I'm good with. It's the blending to create color I am trying to get a better feel for, what does it take TO achieve the teal I am looking for. You suggested (my words not yours) mess around with color to see how one affects another recommending Gouache medium. I have 13 Holbein gouache: Mars Violet, Cobalt Violet, Brilliant Orange, Opera, Geranium, Prussian Blue, Burnt Sienna, Permanant Green light, Cadmium Green, Cadmium Green deep, Naples Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Pearl White. Am I correct I would need to acquire more, pure color (+ black, white, gray) to create my own 'blends' color wheel? Honestly I'd like to avoid purchasing more materials considering I have so many already. Also have a ton of pastels 90% chalk like and a as yet unused set of 25 oil pastels. Looking up trying to figure this out I'm confused with the terminology used, crayon, pastel… am I correct neither of those pastels work with water? (Not getting anywhere using them dry.) Next I have a Garan D'Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle unused set of 15 missing any green, my favorite color. (Appears it's slot is occupied by another violet.) Finally quite a bit of watercolor…. (I have some colored pencils however, none are watercolor and unhappy after messing around with them. I have markers but that was not one of Mother's mediums and from my experience not mine either at least at this point. Plus they are old, it's spotty amongst the variety not completely dry and were child Elementary School to begin with. 😁) So, what do you recommend LOL? -Purchase more, expensive Gouache in primary colors? - Look for a green watercolor crayon/pastel? - Just get a set of primary watercolor pencil? -Have a go with watercolor? -Silly, just pull from any of what I do have like loads of green Gouache, just use that with the watercolor crayon... And last but not the least, on what paper do I create this masterpiece? 😁 I have Boodles of all sorts, and paper IS one of my mediums - just not painted or drawn on. Is 1 more suited to type of pigment and/or less lukley to end up a blur of mud Browns 'color' wheel? Just trying to narrow down what to look for, hell locate, in the plethora of types of paper I have at my disposal (I won't live long enough to try everything. 😏) I'm guessing vellum is a no-go 😆 but should I dig out something with a light or heavy tooth? Stick to the Arches watercolor paper, what Weight vicinity? A print, card stock? Mahalo nui loa in advance. 🍍

i am not a professional but i have sewn and am planning to go to design school next year. my advice for you on the sewing front is just to practice a lot. youtube will be your best friend when it comes to learning sewing techniques so watching a lot of tutorials will help as well. for the design part, what helps me is to collect a bunch of images of designs and clothes that i like (i use pinterest), look at the parts that interest me the most, and combine them to create something new. also, don’t worry too much about having a similar design to someone else. just try to put your own unique spin on it.

Hi Zoe Hong, I’m really loving your wonderful videos. You’re very funny and witty, while sharing lots of your knowledge generously. I love that you’re in search of the best white gel pen. Do you have a video of your reviews so far?

Hi, I wanted to ask what your opinion is on summer courses in fashion. I am studying economics rn (1st year) but I would love to do some summer courses (not the most expensive ones ofc), to prepare for a potential career in the fashion industry in the future. What would u recommend. From your perspective, what do you think of my idea? Love ur channel

Hey! Thanks for the insight Zoe, your videos are always really helpful. I usually sketch and draw illustrations on an Ipad Pro, and that works really well for me. Do you think that would be acceptable to use as a primary tool in US fashion schools? I'm planning to attend Santa Monica College next year.
