"Grown Up" is about a relationship I had when I was younger that I was only able to recently process and fully understand now that I’m an adult. A situation sadly so many girls (and boys) can relate to. I just hope that by sharing my story and its nuances, others that have experienced something similar will feel seen and not alone.
This video is comprised of home videos from my childhood, and footage from when I moved to New York City in my late teens - when the situation happened. Looking back on that time, I might have thought I was so grown up and independent, but I was more like the little kid in the videos.

LYRICS
Twenty candles on the cake
Yellow cabs and vintage gowns
I could've used a friend
When you came around
Watched me lose my world
So you gave me yours
Said nothing's gonna hurt you now
Kissed me and you said I was so mature
Thought I had it figured out
Made me feel so grown up, grown up
Where were all the grown ups, growing up
Now that I'm a grown up, grown up
I don't get how you were having fun
I was way too young
New city all alone
My parents broke our home
Thought I was so independent
Rewrite the story every time I tell it
I was just a kid
Couldn't even drink
Younger than your son is now
Does it make you sick
Did you really think I'd never say the words out loud
Thought I wouldn't find you out
Made me feel so grown up, grown up
Where were all the grown ups, growing up
Now that I'm a grown up, grown up
I don't get how you were having fun
I was way too young
How could you be having fun
I was way too young
How could you be having fun
I was way too young
You were not a white knight
You were just a man
Now I'm finally old enough
To fucking understand
I wasn't an old soul
I was just a kid
How do you sleep at night
Knowing what you did
Made me feel so grown up, grown up
Where were all the grown ups, growing up
Now that I'm a grown up, grown up
I don't get how you were having fun
I was way too young
Watched me lose my world
So you gave me yours
Said nothing's gonna hurt you now
Now that I'm a grown up, grown up
I don't get how you were having fun
I was way too young

Thank you for talking about this. Especially when abuse is in the “grey zone”, where it is not apparent for everyone that it is completely wrong, it is so hard to talk about. My guitar teacher that I had since I was 14 started grooming me. When I got 18 he immediately moved to becoming sexual with me. He never broke a law. I never said no. But he was twice my age. I felt honoured in a way that I was an “old soul” for him and felt so “grown up”. My parents didnt intervene, they liked him. I never wanted sex, but my mom told me that I would have to have it when I wanted to have kids one day. I felt under pressure to comply with expectations. Now, many years later, I am out and proud as a lesbian and have a girlfriend! ❤

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry that happened. We really need to have NO tolerance for predators in our communities regardless of their affiliation or how well we know (we think) we know them.

I feel every single word you're singing down to my core, especially 'where are all the grown ups growing up' - I was SA'd by my aunts bf at age 3 with my extended family in the same damn room, so yeah where were all the grown ups? I had to grow up to protect myself. I'm in tears. Sending you so many good, loving, and healing vibes. 😭

Crying my eyes out while screaming the lyrics of this song rn Even when I saw just a chorus part on the Instagram I got goosebumps and tears because of all the bad memories coming back. Later I thought I would be mentally prepared for this song coming out, though I’M DEFINITELY NOT It’s breaking my heart over and over again and I’m getting angry understanding that such an experience is sadly too relatable for too many young people. I hope all of us will find healing one day ❤️‍🩹 Please, don’t be afraid to talk aloud about this shіt, all of those grown up аsshоlеs did this only because they feel their complete impunity!!! Thank you, Zoe ❤️

Zolita, I just wanted to say that it's ok if you are still processing what happened. Everyone needs time and it's ok to reach out to others for help or assistance. I think it's good that you wrote a song about what happened. I hope that it helped you and that it will raise awareness. All of us are proud of you and we hope that you will continue to heal from this ❤

Well this absolutely destroyed me. I mean, in a good way because same, where the FUCK were the grownups when we needed them. I was 12 and no one noticed. It's validating and also horrifying to realize so many of us had the same experiences. We need to do better for the coming generation. Thank you for being so open with your music and your experiences, it really does help.

Having been through this too, I am so thankful for all of the support and therapy in my life. As an adult, if I had heard this song without the support of friends and counseling, this song could have wrecked me. Now, my heart only aches for everyone else who's gone or unfortunately are going through this. This song was well written.
