Nice Bat Rep. Thanks for doing that. The Armor rules loophole (stacking Kevlar and Armor Rating to invulnerability) unfortunately is there "as written". Infantry was never meant to have an Armor value beyond 7 however. Any ratings higher than that are listed in the book as being for vehicles and armored walkers. My bad tho. I should have triple checked that restriction was more clearly stated. There's always somebody who's going to use the rules to break the spirit of the game.

I don’t think anyone was trying to break the spirit of the game, they just encountered some stuff that clunked and felt off and asked instead.

@@GuerrillaMiniatureGames My apologies. That was more an observation on different types of gamers than a statement about your friend. Like I've said, the infantry armor restriction/distinction was well established in our game group but was omitted in the Zona Alfa book. That's totally on me for not picking up on on it during the edits. It'll be included in the FAQ - along with other particulars that slipped through the cracks or weren't clearly expressed.

@@CCGlazier ooooh, okay. Gonna be honest, I was rethinking if I wanted to buy it after hearing about that vulnerability for exploitation in the rules as written. I despise house rules as I think they break how the game was intended to be played by the designer and can lead to other issues. Since you clarified it and there's a clarification in the rules FAQ, I'm putting it back on the wishlist.

Campaign systems are always the hardest part of any ruleset to get right! I will still applaud Zona Alpha for its ambitions tho; A.I. enemies, campaigns, lots of equipment, random events and crazy narratives - all crammed into 65 pages! Great looking batrep as always Ash, looking forward to see what house rules you'd come up with!

I have been anxiously waiting this battle report after seeing Ash do his previous let’s play. It inspired me to purchase the rulebook in anticipation for his next match. I have to say, your table looks beautiful and I really enjoyed this match up. I was very disheartened at the end however as it appeared though some of the rules may be janky or broken. I’m glad to see in the comments that this has already been addressed by the creator. Keep up the good work Ash and keep inspiring to pick up new games. I hope you keep Zona Alfa going as it’s awesome and you’re doing it justice.

Osprey Games rulesets restricted a bit on number of pages. I think those games might be primarily designed by third party writers, so playtesting might not be as standardized.

I think it's actually up to each individual author to test them. Osprey just works on the books themselves.

Hu too bad I just ordered my copy. 😭 I will enforce the rule that someone suggested saying you can't go beyond 7 aemor and say the hostile will attack the first person in sight. Thx for the review

something my friend and i came up with: Traders have to trade something like an artifact or a certain amount of gear in order to get that 40% discount on 3 or 4 items on a set list

I think in the book it says they get paid 40% less when they sell things.

40% off everything is absolutely wild. Being able to become bulletproof straight away with some lucky rolls is also hilarious. One day y'all won't find the one thread to pull to break an osprey game.

That assumes Osprey starts publishing rules that are actually playtested well enough to not have giant gaping holes. I wouldn't hold my breath on that personally. Their little blue books are some of the most hit-or-miss rule sets I've seen in 50 years of gaming.

@@richmcgee434 I don't know - whilst I haven't played games for 50 years, I've seen many a game break apart once you start getting into the corner cases. Besides, the Osprey books are still good value for their money; £13 for a somewhat polished set of rules is quite cheap when you consider the amount of time that goes into them.

@@vancemag The "Rampant" games (Dragon Rampant, for ex) are pretty good, albeit a bit abstract. Gaslands was solid (with the possible exception of OP rockets) initially but the expansion stuff they came out with wasn't as well playtested and has really put me off on it due to power creep. I enjoyed Of Gods and Mortals and Fighting Sail as well, neither had any really major issues that I ran into. Of the other ones I tried, Rogue Stars and Kobolds & Cobblestones were fairly disappointing in the long run, and I've avoided others (including Zona Alfa) based on reviews and playthroughs like this one. Everyone's tastes will vary, but despite the low prices I no longer buy anything from this line without getting a look at the game in action first, and often not afterward.

@@Phoenikuz False economy in my opinion. Their games are certainly cheap, but polished they generally are not. Look at how quickly they've broken the rules on Zona Alfa. The same thing has happened often enough with other games in this range that I consider it the norm, not the exception, and I've given up buying anything from it without seeing extensive reviews beforehand.

Hi I'm pretty sure you already noticed this or realized it but equipment in the special item table do not count against your equipment slots, so the Kevlar plates actually don't take up equipment slots but you can only take two per crew member, and honest I know you could just make the trader a non-playable faction for House Rules and another Rule you could probably add is for armor every time you take a hit it will lose a point of durability for every hit taken so in the next game so you have to constantly sell armor but it's value is based on the point you sell it at so if you start with the EXO armor but lose two points of durability you can only sell it at a volume of 5000, and have to keep buy armor to keep it in the condition you want it

The spindly tress look like they are just old Woodland Scenics that have seen a few years of games. The bottlebrush style trees are likely old GW re-branded trees. They were and are still made by K&M. Available here stateside, legends-in-time.com/WordPress/scenery-buildings/km-trees/

Great batrep as always Ash. I really love the setting. I don’t know if you’ve heard of Meow Wolf and The House of Eternal Return, but it is an art installation based on The Anomaly ... meowwolf.com
