Wiring is one of the hardest concepts for guys to learn, when they get it, it’s like a light bulb turning on in there heads. I have been teaching HVACR Apprentices for close to 20 years, on and off. Really Good Video, Mike. Some guys learn by seeing a diagram, some by reading a book, some by watching a video and others need to put there hands on it and do it over again. In the trades it’s usually the hands on type, not being disrespectful at all, I don’t care how someone learns, as long as they learn. 👍🏻👍🏻

Mike, I wish I had a mentor like you. I worked in maintenance for 45 years. Maintaining and repairing specialty wire production machines. Extruders cable machines. First 10 years none of the old-timers would show me anything. After gaining knowledge on my own any time a new mechanic came into my shop I would show him everything I knew. I watch your videos every day you were the man.

You appreciate us watching and we appreciate you teaching us. I learned so much watching you just like an apprentice learning from a master being right there and listening to you explain what's going on is priceless. I couldn't get one contractor to take me through the trade because they have to pay me a decent wage. They'd rather hire a guy that can make them stacks of cash without having to "baby sit" them all the time. It's hard to survive in a world of lazyness and being cheap. Someone has to make that decision of do I want to waste 50k a year on someone or pocket that money. Because of that, I work at walmart stocking produce barely surviving. I used to build 480v service's, run conduit, romex, doing a lot of residential work such as wiring entire houses by myself to struggling to stay afloat. Where I am, there isn't a lot going on and learning a new trade is always a plus, especially when that guy decides to drop 50k a year on an apprentice, they better step up to the plate.

Nice job of cleaning up a goat rodeo. I do this a lot of this, I hope some day WAGO will follow, but I was taught to do these with terminal blocks mounted to a board somewhere near the valves. In later years I went to running the thermostat wiring in plastic push lock air tube to eliminate pinching loose wires. It looks great on multi zone radiant systems and it’s easy to install drill a hole pop in a rubber grommet and use a zip tie to retain.

One statement you made I strongly agree with. Let's make the trades industry professional again. I get very tired of the half a$$ work that 80 percent of these heating guys do now a days. I run into more messes like you ran into with this than I do clean installs anymore. Not sure if it's because some people don't know what they are doing or if they are just lazy or a combo of both. Thank you for installing "pride in your work" to your apprentice and if your apprentice is reading this, that pride in your work is what will land you jobs for the rest of your life.

Very interesting I'm a heating engineer from the UK. 90% of our zone valves and controls are on 230-240 volts and the 2 most common systems in the UK are called S-plan or Y-plan. The basic concept is the same. Keep creating great content and have a prosperous New Year.

I have been a electrical controls guy for 40 years - if you want to confuse a kid just start using the term "common"... to explain circuits. In control circuits it's a switched hot until it goes through a coil or motor then it is a neutral. And all your doing with multiple stats like that is parelling them so when a stat closes it opens a zone valve and the switch in the zone valve turns on the boiler IF the boiler temp is below the set temp... you should build a teaching board to teach boiler and ac electrical to the beginners ...and some of the more experienced guys that still dont get it...

Those HoneyWell zone valves have 4 long wires, but not long enough! What do i mean? Well I like to wire all the low voltage wires into a junction box and make my connections in it. With Taco zone valves this allows me to do just precisely that, which in turn makes for a cleaner, neater job. I do like those new age wire connectors you used here, they are quite neat indeed! Don't get me wrong, i know this is not a new install, so we have to deal with things the way they are most of the time in heating service. BTW Congrats on your licensure endeavors.

I know my way around AC wiring, ever even seen a boiler. My brother moved to Iowa and asked me flr help with his boiler. This video showed me exactly what I needed to know. Thank you. I have a question tho. Why are the two thermostats next to each other? Doesn't that mean it'll never know the actual temp of the zone it's heating?

I sold my old and purchased my house a year ago. I’m a Automotive tech of 20 or so years now. I do all the Diagnostic / programming work and electrical repairs. In my new house I have 5 zone valves that all work fine. However the wire management is D~ work. One part of me says just leave it alone the bigger part says clean it all up and redo it.

@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 Жыл бұрын
or possibly just for the end switch, but maybe both. at one point integrated flow checks were not a thing, so you'd need to use a relay box and flow check both. the other zone controller likely cannot switch both line voltage(for circ.) and low voltage end switch at once, or it's combined in a group of others. hard to say/guess without looking it all over. they may be stupidly running that circ. pump dead-headed by closing the zone valve and letting it run with the rest of the circs. and boiler.

could you do a vid about line stats with ribb relays?
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 Жыл бұрын
very similar to a 24volt relay and thermostat, except you have line voltage thermostat and relay coil(mostly 120v but could be many other voltages). the relay contacts switch the "high current" loads on and off, while the thermostat only switches the "low current" relay coil on and off. that allows the thermostat wiring to be smaller gauge and long runs without voltage drop and high current (say 14awg), controlling a relay with 20 or 30 amp contacts "near" the device being switched, which would have much larger wire and high current draw. probably not a good explanation, there's a reason I'm not a teacher. 🤡 far better at doing than saying.
