EPISODE 138
This episode is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction....
Picture if you will, a zoo exhibit that's lit by the stars - yet, everything around you disappears with every step. You're placed in the middle of a jungle that's alive with creatures that you can see disappear. You've crossed over into Animals of the Night.
The Memphis Zoo's Animals of the Night opened in 1995 and even to this day it remains one of the few nocturnal houses in the United States. People visit zoos to see big name species like lions, bears, elephants and what not but that's what makes nocturnal houses so special - they don't have any of that! Even though seeing animals in the dark can be a challenge it is also rewarding at the same time. Nocturnal attractions across the globe are famous for displaying some of the world's rarest animals - and Memphis's is no exception. Civets, genets, pottos, lorises, and the elusive Bear cuscus make up a small portion to an even larger list of rarities and animal oddities. Please enjoy another special episode of Zoo Tours: Lights Out Edition!
Species List as of April 2023:
1. Brazilian Three-banded Armadillo, Pygmy Slow Loris
2. Potto
3. Kinkajou

*More random facts:* 1. Here is the zoo’s Animals of the Night page, filled with personal profiles of the animals you saw on this video (it’s slightly outdated): www.memphiszoo.org/animals-of-the-night 2. See how it compares to Cincinnati’s nocturnal house - they share 7 species but Cincy’s is more cat centric. Comment below which one you think it better: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9CCosp9z7S8nIk.html 3. Watch Derek’s take on Animals of the Night: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mptpYMScv97dYHU.html 4. The Carnivora restaurant is the oldest building at the zoo. 5. Link to the Bushbaby call (hopefully it’s real): facebook.com/watch/?v=448051772508384 6. The animals were actually much more active with the lights on and not only were most of them sleeping during the night cycle, but they were difficult to see regardless. This is the second darkest nocturnal house I’ve seen behind Omaha’s. 7. The last time I saw a Night Monkey was in 2010 before Cincinnati closed their (old) Nocturnal House. 8. I believe we’ve seen sloths three times on the channel already, but they were never as cooperative as Memphis’s. 9. Grogu was actually hand raised, so he was always in an exhibit by himself or with a keeper. At the time of this video (April 2023), he was displayed in the old Brazilian porcupine exhibit BUT he did rotate with his parents in the actual aardvark enclosure. 10. This is the rarest collection ever featured on the channel in one episode. There are at least three species that we won’t ever feature again. 11. I believe the triangle exhibit for the genet once displayed frogs, and possibley axolotls in the the connecting exhibit. 12. The Brazilian Porcupine habitat displayed another Tamandua not too long ago. 13. The last genet enclosure once displayed Cloud rats. 14. Typically we get a bit of criticism for calling Binturongs ‘Bearcats’ - though not only does Memphis refer to them as such in their signage, but every guest that walked by called them Bearcats as well. 15. Despite featuring Night Hunters successfully, I consider Animals of the Night the first true full length nocturnal house feature - as a lot of the footage was filmed with the lights off. We’ve also featured smaller nocturnal buildings/individual nocturnal exhibits in Akron, Jacksonville, Zoo Tampa, Minnesota, Cleveland, Georgia Aquarium and more.

Well not really. The problem is there are alot of sick creeps who hang arround the darker areas of these exhibits and play with their private areas when looking at other people walking by. The zoo dosent want a lawsuit so they find a way to get rid of dark exhibits.
@neilchace1858
@neilchace1858 Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. I can certainly see the appeal, however there are also a lot of glaring problems with nocturnal houses as a style of exhibitry: 1. Crowd control in dark exhibits tends to be very difficult. 2. As the field of animal behavior has progressed, it's been shown that there is much less rigidity in the categories of Nocturnal vs. Diurnal. Most animals fall somewhere in between the two, and there are very few species that will genuinely, consistently be easier to see/be more active in Nocturnal exhibits. 3. Nocturnal exhibits tend to be poor for photography. 4. It makes animal acquisition much more difficult when you limit the species pool to only Nocturnal species. 5. In exchange for the loss of Nocturnal houses, however, there has been an increase in standalone Nocturnal exhibits, which in my opinion is a stronger option. Have a Rainforest exhibit, for example, but then pair it with a Nocturnal exhibit for slow loris and/or bushbabies, rather than an entire building strictly for Nocturnal species that faces many of the problems described above.

@@gecko2738It's Not just nocturnal houses where " SICK Creeps " hang out. Sick creeps will hang out in Restrooms ( that's why some restaurant restrooms have Locks. Sick creeps will also hang out behind a tree.
@gecko2738
@gecko2738 11 ай бұрын
@David Wesley well not really, most sick creeps at restaurants weee actually reported to be male servers in their 30s. This was from the hosten society annual report in 2021. The main reason why restrooms at restaurants have locks is intimidate parons from using the restroom and get them tempted to order more food. This is a tactic many restaurants use to keep guests at the table as long as possible.

15:03 Dixie and Zoey were both Cape Porcupines (Hystrix africaeaustralis). The species is sometimes called the Cape Crested Porcupine which is easy to confuse with the African Crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata), in addition to both species being similar in appearance. Unfortunately they have both passed away in recent years and currently a male/female pair, Piper and Tala, live in their old exhibit. Tala is the larger of the two. The ringtail shown at 15:33 is actually the female Crockett, she and Gilbert share the habitat. All the information about Gilbert is on point, he likes to hide in the overhead tube/center triangle exhibit. Great video, thanks for highlighting the rare and amazing animals that call The Animals of the Night home!

Yes, quite logical. They have an animal that costs millions of dollars to care for every year, and they are investing in these millions by abusing the animal that makes them millions... Sounds like a genius marketing strategy (s). We do love the occasional troll around here, but kindly do not (purposefully) spread lies about a subject you quite literally know nothing about.

Thank you very much for the detailed videos from so many different zoos. I really like that your videos are now longer. The current presentation of the Memphis Zoo's night house has become fantastic. So many rare animals and you got them all on video. I've visited a lot of zoos, I'm from Germany, so unfortunately not many in America. This makes watching your videos even more fun. By the way, the Sulawesi Bear Cuscus (Ailurops ursinus) is found in European zoos in 3 different attitudes. Unfortunately too few here. I look forward to many more of your videos and hope you keep length as the new standard.

Back in the day The Bronx Zoo had its World of Darkness exhibit full of bats other nocturnal mammals as well as some creepy inverts. Also some amphibians and possible reptiles. It was closed down in the mid 90s due to budget cuts. Many fund memories at the Bronx Zoo.

To think I never had the chance to visit the now closed down World of Darkness is a huge understatement. But alas, I’m glad the Bronx Zoo still has some nocturnal exhibits sprinkled around JungleWorld, Mouse House, The Kiwis in the Aquatic Bird House, and the Aardvark Exhibit in the Carter Giraffe Building. (Also to correct on when WoD was closed, it was in 2009 just to be sure.)

I feel that Philadelphias small mammal house deserves to be featured but you can’t go in anymore however it has other creatures of the night like Echidnas, Elephant shrews, Harvest mice, Hedgehogs, Meerkats, Vampire bats, Agoti, Hoffmans two toed sloth, aardvark, tree shrews, chinchilla, degu, Jirids, damarland mole rat, Madagascar giant jumping rat, African striped weasel, Sugar glider and Pygmy Loris along with Pygmy marmoset But you can only see the meerkats around the house but the sloth is in the rare animal conservation center and they also still have vampire bats but that’s what I know as of now but like for me the best part was seeing aardvark and meerkats coexisting together from what I understand and my favorite animals of the night have to be all of them except for the vampire bats.

I visited ZSL London Zoo this Monday for my 4th trip of the year. As I'm a member I absolutely visiting and it's my favourite zoo in the UK but sadly the zoo lost their 2 female Common Warthogs last week which is a shame because I loved visiting and photographing them. Common Warthogs are quite rare in UK collections with (now) only 4 UK zoos housing them. I really hope ZSL London Zoo acquire Warthogs again soon because their enclosure in "Into Africa" is currently empty. I mean the Zoo could move their Red River Hogs into the exhibit but then the Cassons will have one empty exhibit as well. I am still hoping for a antelope species to return to London. I would love to see Gemsbok return or even Anoa.

True, genets aren’t actual ‘cats’, at least not as most would think of them. Obviously they aren’t classified as ‘true’ cats’ (animals under _Felis_ or _Panthera_ for example), but they are part of the Feliformes & Felidae, as a whole. Maybe y’all know this, lol, but so are hyenas/aardwolves,, meerkats, mongooses, civets, binturongs, the linsang, fossa, cacomixtle (aka ringtail), and I don’t even remember what else. All of these are relatives to cats, lions, tigers, leopards, pumas, cheetahs, servals, etc.

It's ironic how some of the most right wing anti science states have the best zoo exhibits in the US. Let's hope we can vote in more people that will continue to fund places like the Memphis Zoo instead of defunding libraries and schools I wouldn't be surprised if zoos will be on the chopping block next for trying to educate the public about climate change and the natural world.
