EPISODE 126
We now have a new longest tour of the year! Does that automatically make it better though? In this case, yeah, a little. We've returned to Zoo Knoxville, a park that's made some improvements over the last couple of years. From creating award winning spaces for their tigers and gibbons, planning to send their elephants to a better home, to opening the ARC. The Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Campus made scales in 2021. Zoo Knoxville has always been a leader in herptile preservation, but now they have even more tools to show off and expand their care. The ARC is a 2.5 acre campus, featuring over 70 public species, almost half of which are endangered. In case you haven't heard, clearly this new development has lived up to the hype as the AZA just awarded Zoo Knoxville and their ARC the Top Honors for excellence in design.

The pleco was a watermelon pleco and the side neck to me looks like either a yellow headed river turtle or more likely the Magdalena river turtle both of which are critically endangered but it’s from the genus Podocnemis if that helps

Tennessee is kind of a hub for AZA facilities that really specialize in work with freshwater turtles. Zoo Knoxville has long been renowned for its success with reptile and especially freshwater turtle species and tortoises. The old reptile house had a entire center made for breeding and propagating freshwater turtles, and bog plants. One of the best exhibits at the old reptile house was a piece of a native bog that was entirely natural and exhibit native species. Much of this is still somewhat intact and functional, and you can still see much of the work they have been doing with this work there when you go. It was also home to a seasonally outdoor Gila monster habitat, and a habitat for burrowing owls, as well as a huge flight aviary for a condor. And while the indoor section of the reptile house was a bit outdated it was unique and well laid out And Tennessee aquarium is also a major hub for breeding with freshwater turtles especially Nashville, Memphis, and Chattanooga zoos are all also great with their reptile programs as well

This was a pretty cool Reptile and Amphibian house! Most of the habitat were quite immersive, and there were many species of reptiles and amphibians that I hadn't known were there. I might to have to visit there some day

I've been to one zoo in my life, and that was the Miami, Florida zoo. My main memory was riding the monorail back in the 90's seeing all the animals as we went around. Way better view of the white tiger that wanted to hide towards the back when I tried to see it from the ground

That's one big exhibit attraction! Plus, visit the Woodland Park Zoo soon! Also, 3 zoo trivia questions for you & your girlfriend, Zak.... 1) What animal did the SF Zoo welcome when Bruce the hippopotamus moved away? 2) How many rescued cougars were euthanized at the Oakland Zoo so far? 3) What are the names of the 2 famous elephants that were star attractions at the Disney's Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safari ride? Leaping Archaeopteryx!

I love the bird interaction at the Dallas zoo it’s so fun to see so many birds in one place including cockatiels, that like to perch on your shoulder as well as learning about native bird species and conservation, it was the highlight of the entire zoo visit that enjoyed, that and the bugs display called bugging you.

Zoo Knoxville is the place to go for turtles and tortoises! Not only is the arc as you have seen full of them. But there is actually a lot of the species they have on the other side of the zoo where the old reptile house was. They had multiple big boom breeding centers for turtles, amphibians, and plants, and they also have a tortoise walk where you can feel Aldabra tortoises in the summer, not to mention they old reptile and amphibian house still has some available habitats open, and is still home base for many of their turtle and tortoise breeding programs.

Right now they are looking at a few plans for the old otter exhibit, and reptile house I’m not entirely aware of. As of right now the old reptile house is still home to much of the rigor and tortoise breeding programs, and is still housing some species along with many of the in biom bogs and breeding habitats for turtles and wetland plants. Right now the main thing that is different is that the segmented habitat area where they were running their outdoor breeding programs and habitats for tortoises is now a tortoise walk where you can go and feed multiple species of tortoise in the summer.

I have a theory it will end up being converted into a aquarium, small mammal house, invertebrate house (most likely), or be slowly taken apart and made as a space for a all new concept.

Just so you’re aware the Asian forest tortoise Manouria emys is actually very well adapted to cold temperatures and are known to handle temperatures down to the 40s just fine while all the others are less adaptive to cold temperatures at the Louisville zoo for example we take in our aldabras when it’s getting 60 or below at night due to their very low cold tolerance I would guess a similar story for all the little tortoises

Yeah, I own a emys and as long as it's in the 50s he is still pretty active, my Grandis tend to stay active as well as temps drop.
