Tascam sounds quite a bit better, more clairity and nicer highs. The Zoom sounds more compressed and quite muffled, I wouldn't use its lav mic but rather a better one. Would have liked to hear something like the sennheiser ME2 II on both recorders

Prefer the fuller sound of the Tascam. Can the Zoom be made fuller in post giving it a more Tascam sound?

The TASCAM was distorting when you spoke loudly. I record in noisy places so I’m happy I went with the zoom!

Tascam sounds better in general, but that may be the microphone difference. The other features for the Zoom are clearly better, ans especially the 32 bit float. Time for Tascam to update their recorder.

To get a feeling of the mic quality vs the recording quality (32 bit float vs regular), it would be great if you tried it with another mic. For example, recording on the Tascam with the Zoom mic and vice versa.

Why would you not set the DR10L to auto gain?

Can the Zoom-app be paired with two or more F2-BTs or just a single one?

The zoom sounded very compressed and the tascam sounded clear. I'm not sure if this has to do with how the audio was compressed in post or if it was the mic or preamp quality in the zoom itself. I would love to see a follow-up video that looks deeper into the files. The Bluetooth feature is really nice, however, for weddings I'd probably still start the recording manually because I'm not sure I would want to run the risk of possibily having connectivity issues. Maybe test range and connectivity in a follow-up video too?

side by side the Tascam is better anybody would say, but if you used it in the field, the zoom would be fine, so with the ease of use I would go the zoom.

Max, the audio level changed during the overdriven Zoom recording at 7:58. Was that the Zoom compressing the audio? If it was, does the compression ease when the shouting stops? Also, you didn't change the graphic back to "Tascam" at 8:06.

As others have pointed out, use of an identical higher end lav between both recorders would have been more valuable as really not many professionals will be using the included mic. Something like a mid-range MKEII would have been more informative. Also I would point out that the Bluetooth functionality isn’t really about control or use of a phone to control the device. It’s ALL about BT timecode compatiblity with Timecode Systems!

So I bought 3x new Tascam DR-10L's a few weeks back to go with 2 I already have. Wish I knew that Zoom was coming out with the F2, I would have waited...

I've never had issues with battery life on my DR10 because I know that one battery lasts 7 hours, so I just swap it every day/shoot, never had issues with gain staging because even if you're peaking at -6db, there is still plenty of headroom. Furthermore, the sound clarity is far better on the tascam. One area where Zoom might have an advantage is when making 'self shooting' kits for remote contributors (during this pandemic) - where the priority is to give the ma device that will be a s simple to use as possible, so they can't screw it up. Finally, it doesn't matter if the encoding is 32 bit, you can still clip the microphone and preamp itself.

Thanks so much for the comparison! I do a bunch of weddings where mic setup sometimes has to happen 5 minutes ago. I have a pair of the Tascams and find the auto level function to have never let me down. However, the problem I face is stupid user error where I "thought" I was recording. That bluetooth connection is TOTALLY worth it and with that I'll never sweat about recording since I can just check triple check from my phone. Other things that seem really nice from your comparison is the red tally light. I always wished there was a dedicated tally light on that Tascam. Bye-bye Tascam and hellllllo Zoom! Thanks again Max!

When you were talking at normal volume there is almost no difference. When you're yelling and pull it down sure Zoom sounds more mushy, but it's better than blowing it out.

So how can you monitor the sound ?

Is it possible to monitor and control 3 x Zoom-F2's with the app ? That would be great...never cables..

Wow, talk about biased. You *completely* ignored the elephant in the room: The F2's build quality. It's light because it's flimsy. Worse still, the battery compartment is badly designed. It is extremely tight. And the batteries are difficult to remove too. The cover has a single, cheap plastic latch to hold it in place, and is VERY difficult to open without excessive force. The kind of force that will see it pinging out of your hand and onto the floor. This would not be so bad if it had decent battery life (one day, max), or in-place recharging, although I don't expect it on any device at that price point. So, the F2 was not for me - it's built to break and I'm not the only one who thinks that. Not so bad in a £20 device, but for £200 I expect something that will last. This mechanism won't. Sorry Zoom, not buying. Don't get me wrong, I like Zoom gear, and the F6 is brilliant. As it the F2's electronics. But it's let down badly by the case. Ok let's be honest... The zoom sounds like a cheap gaming headset mic (very nasal walkie-talkie kind of sound) but it has better features than the tascam, I would like to hear it with a better lav. Thanks for the review

The Tascam sounds better. The Zoom sounds darker and the foam on the mic might be the reason. Maybe the Tascam has a better solution than foam to cut the wind but keeping the signal brighter. The Tascam sounds better out of the box, very close to what a finished voice should sound after editing. The Zoom will need EQ corrections to remove the "boxiness" in the mid range and some high end boost to make it brighter. The problem when you have a darker mic and you try to make it brighter in post with eq, is that you will also boost BG hiss.

I have 2 tascams they have replaced my boom setup. So much easier.

Hmm, the Tascam sounded better (more fuller vs flat), but it could be due to the lav mics. Perhaps additional testing is warranted with different mics.

You didn't mention what that second port on the top of the Zoom is for.

Some people complained that F2 have jack noice issue.

The Tascam sounds a lot better but I think it's the lav mic as opposed to the recorders themselves. Can you use the Tascam mic on the Zoom recorder? That might be the best of both worlds.

Why is no one comparing the clip on the back. The one on Tascam is so tight!!! Can't even use it on a belt..... How is the Zoom one?

I just got one of these and it has the growing problem of if you move the mic where it plugs in, it creates a popping sound. I'm returning it until they resolve this issue.

Got a question! Could you in theory plug a powered XLR mic say the RODE NTG2 into this with a XLR to 3.5mm? Been shooting in a lot of schools recently and I've had to use a XLR mic on a boom and stand because I'm not aloud to close to the students for obvious reason, would save me some hassle as their volume are all over the place especially the really young ones

Think the Tentacle Track E would have been a much better recorder and package as a whole.
