An in-depth, hands-on review of the new Zoom H5 recorder, with a focus on how the new features can help your video productions. Read my full blog post on the H5 here: goo.gl/fVifj6
For a long time I wanted an audio manufacturer to come out with an ultra-compact field recorder that featured at least two XLR inputs, and until I tried out the Zoom H5, I thought that no one ever did. Now the recorder I wanted is here, and it does a lot more to aid you in video production than I ever imagined a little device like this would.
I love how you can remove the microphone module from the front, and either leave it off to have a super-lightweight recorder to work with, or add the SGH-6 shotgun module, which creates an impressive solution for recording sound in a shoulder-mount video rig. The fact that you can get the EXH-6 module, which adds two more XLR inputs to the H5 (albeit, two inputs that lack phantom power), is just bonkers, and very, very cool. This is an entry-level budget device, let's not forget.
I can go on and on about the pros and cons of the new Zoom H5, and I do exactly that in the post over at my blog: goo.gl/fVifj6

I appreciate you doing this video, you just saved me $1000! I was all ready to buy a Sennheiser G3 kit and a juiced link. I have a Zoom h5 with a Countryman XLR lav. With the line out, I can plug in the lav mic in the XLR input and run a long 3.5mm cable to my Canon camcorder which will also act as a preamp if I understand your video correctly. Thanks!

I came so close to buying the Zoom H4N and in the last second I found that they came out with the Zoom H5. Since the H4N is more or less the default recorder for most videographers, I will be interested in a video that puts them against each other and list the differences. Your video is the closest thing I have seen so far to doing this. Nice work!

Very well spoken and information packed presentation.....I learned a lot.....and for me the attenuation discussion was perfectly addressed and easy to follow...but I do already understand the difference between a line level output and an amplified headphone output......I want to put together a user-friendly, unintimidating looking, audio/video rig for use in recording myself, students or both while teaching private music lessons and recitals as well. If you have and thoughts or recommendations in that regard I would greatly appreciate your awesome expertise....I think I am sold on the H5, but now I need help on the video side of the recording.

would love to see you do a review of the H5 vs the Olympus LS-11. Ambient (nature) sounds, not only voice. Or Music with a good dynamic range. Clasical, or guitar? This was the most helpful video I have found so far. Thank you. I am a neophyte to two system recording and I am struggling to figure out how to do it. I have a KZfaq channel, Millstap, where I record my VERY loud vintage Fender amps. I have used a fairly simple Flip UltraHD camera since I started the channel eight years ago. Well, the Flip finally died and I need to upgrade. You didn't mention it, but the literature on the H5 says that the XYH-5 capsule is good up to 140 decibels which hopefully is enough for my needs. Did I say LOUD? I really needed to know how to hook the H5 up to the camera. This video taught me that. I don't have a video camera picked out yet. Do you have any suggestions for someone on a retiree's budget? Do you have to do any video/audio syncing? I am trying to avoid that task. I just want a simple, high quality, point-n-shoot rig.

Hello Sam, First of all Thank You for your efforts to present something in detail as well to clarify the related doubts from hundreds of people like me.... Really Thanking You dear... I'm bit confused to make a decision. We need a solution to create good quality Interview Videos with GREAT quality on its audio (which will be just talking only), Good Presentation videos again with high quality audio, as well very good quality audio clips (which are basically instructions or information to our clients). Kindly note, As audio is one of the most prior thing in our interview videos (eventhough it will be just talking during the interview, but we would like to present with the best quality vocal), What we already have? 2 DSLR Camera - Canon 600D and 700D Shure MVL Lav Mic Laptop What we are planning to buy by this week? For Studio Level setting for Audio Recording (only for audio clips) (and thinking that, these things can be also used for our interviews as well our presentation videos); > Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 > AT2035 / Rode NT1 For Interview Videos Recording; > H4nSP or H5 or Tascam DR-40 4-Track (basically these are available to buy here). Budget wise I'm okay with all of these... bcoz here everything is almost the same price (the cheapest is H4nSP with $30 less). > Rode Videomic Pro My question is, Do I need to buy all these things, (we really wish to have the best quality outputs in both the interview videos and on our Audio clips) for our desired output? If Not, what are the things which I need to buy as the first step? If Yes, will be it possible for me to use all these things in a mix and match envirornents. For example, if any case, we need to use both Rode Videomic pro and AT2035 in a single interview or in our video presentation, is it possible to utilize the entire investment to it's best level... Which Audio Recorder, I should buy for my VOICE ONLY requirements (H4nSP or H5 or Tascam DR-40) Please advice me to take a comfortable decision. Thanks in Advance...

I thought about using my ZOOM Q4 along with a DSLR camera simultaneously. I feel the ZOOM Q4 is better for general shooting and that combining a higher end camera for close ups running together would work since you are feeding the audio from the ZOOM Q4 into the DSLR. I did not know they made a signal attenuating cable. When you load the footage it should be very easy to sync the audio since it is a direct copy.

What do you think is the best option for a D750 for institutional work, weddings and Interviews: a) Rode VideoMicPro straight to the camera b) Zoom H5 c) Zoom H5 + ECM-XM1 d) ECM-XM1 + Saramonic srsmartrig2 I had a Sony Nx5e and that's why I'm considering using that microphone and Investing in a way to use that and be more flexible. Super helpful Sam! Thank you! I got the H5 and love it. I do have a question for you. I've got a Rode mic that has a mini 1/8 jack but I'd like to use it as a shotgun mic and attach it to my H5. I'd like your opinion on getting an adapter (if there is such as a thing) from 1/8 to XLR to hook up the back of the H5 so that I can still use the 90 degree capsule to record a back-up track. Also, what level do you recommend I set the attenuator for shooting films. I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks you!

+MOONCORE FILMS Hi Mooncore. This is the adapter you should use to plug your 1/8 Rode mic into an XLR input: amzn.to/1U2UFGL ...As far as where to set the attenuator goes, that's like someone telling you where to set and leave a focus ring on a lens. There is no way to answer this question by saying "Set it to 5." The only way to do it is to learn how to set audio levels. It's not that hard to do. Very helpful. Thank you! Just one question: I've read a handful of reviews that complain of "zipper noise" when you're adjusting gain on the H5. Is that something you've encountered, and is there a workaround for it?
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 7 жыл бұрын
I didn't experience that when I did this review. When you make gain adjustments on the fly, you need to do it gently. I don't know how this zipper noise occurs, but, gain adjustments always need to be done with care. If the zipper noise happens when you turn the gain knobs quickly, well, that's probably not going to be good audio to begin with. If it happens when you make careful and graceful adjustments up or down, then it would be a concern.

Great video! super helpful and informative. I just have two questions. What is that extra addition to the miniplug cable you use at 6:05 and what is the reason for using that? why not use just the miniplug cable on its own. Secondly lets say I get a sescom cable for the zoom h5, do I still have to turn down the decibles on the h5 to -30? and do I have to mess with any of the audio settings on my camera or is it like once the cable is in it takes care of all of that and you are good to go?
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Rodriguez Music Good question! That is an adapter that I need for my old GH2 camera. That camera doesn't have a full-sized 1/8" mic input (it has a sub-mini input) so I needed the adapter. As far as levels are concerned... You do need to mess around with the audio settings on your camera. When the Sescom cable is connected to the headphone output of the H5, and you plug it into the mic input on your camera, you need to make sure the recording level on your camera is properly set. If it's set too high, the audio recorded in the camera will distort. If it's too low, it will sound too low, and boosting it up in post-production will increase the amount of noise that you can hear. So, you really need to know how to set levels. I wrote a blog post about how to do this, and it's specifically written to make sense to camera people - www.sam-mallery.com/2013/02/how-to-set-audio-levels/

Hey Sam, thanks for a great video. I'm about to pick up a H5 and expect to go stereo line out to my camera for a backup/sync scratch (and possibly perfectly usable w/o post sync) of what I'm recording on the H5. One question I have, however, is how are the channels mixed on the stereo line out. For example, if I were to use the X/Y stereo pair they obviously go to L/R of the line out, but if I add a shotgun to channel one of the H5 and, say, a lav to channel 2, where do they end up on the stereo line out and can I control that somehow? Can't seem to find any info on this. Thanks!
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 7 жыл бұрын
I don't own an H5, so I can't test this for you. I can't confidently answer your question. But, you can try adjusting the monitor mix signals as described on page 82 in the H5's manual, so you can assign what inputs go left, right, or center - www.zoom-na.com/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/E_H5_0.pdf I don't know if these settings change the panning in the "Line Out" on the H5. If they don't, you can connect the headphone output on the H5 to your camera with a Sescom cable (such as this one, which also has a headphone output, so you can still use your headphones when you shoot - amzn.to/2fUyEsp ). This way you can definitely control the panning of the tracks being sent to your camera.

Great video. A small detail, but I'm looking for one. Do you have a link for the dual hot shoe mount you are using on top of your camera giving you the ability to mount both your shotgun mic and your recorder? I haven't found one I like, and yours looks perfect. Reference the Picture at 2:09. Thanks.

That shoe bar came with an old VHS camcorder I bought when I was in high school. Here's an article I wrote about that camera (you can see the bar in a photo or two) - goo.gl/lIglv6. If I had to buy a new shoe bar right now, I would get this one from Vello - amzn.to/2e8feQs

Hi Sam, I read you blog and understand that recording straight to the H5 results in much better audio instead of recording it all at the camera, any tips on how to actually every-time hit record on the H5 and record separately from the camera?? With out it plugged into the camera I sometimes forget and its not like I can go back and do pick-up shots in my build vids. Silly question I know, but making furniture and doing all the filming sound etc theres usually something I miss...

I strongly recommend creating a little "ceremony" before every take. I used to do professional location sound for video and film production. On a real set when you're about to do a take, the camera department would announce "Camera rolls!" -- then everyone listens for the sound person to announce "Sound speeds!" -- then the 2nd AD would get in the frame with the clapper slate and announce the scene and take -- then everyone waits for the director to say "Action!" I make a point of doing a similar thing now, but I shoot alone, so I sound and look a bit crazy when I do it, but it helps a lot. I start rolling the camera and announce "Camera rolls!" -- then I start recording on my audio recorder and announce "Sound speeds!" -- and to help stay organized in post I even announce the shot number, so I hear it in the audio and video clips. It's worth it to make this a habit.

Hey Sam! I appreciate the video! I have questions regarding using the H5 with a D750 that I can't seem to be able to get answered anywhere, so I'm really hoping you can help. 1. What should my line output level be in the Zoom H5? I have seen people recommend anywhere from -10, -20, and -40 db. 2. Am I supposed to be able to monitor the output from my D750 using headphones, when the lineout is connected to the camera and everything is powered on? Or is the audio monitor capability just in the Zoom H5, and I have to trust the D750 is receiving good audio? 3. What should my camera microphone sensitivity settings be? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

The answers to questions 1 and 3 need to be determined by you every time you get ready to shoot something. There is no single answer to these questions. Adjusting audio levels is similar to adjusting the focus of a lens. There is no single setting to recommend because the sweet spot is a moving target. What you need to do is to personally understand the principles of setting proper audio levels, then you'll be able to confidently set the levels you asked about in questions 1 and 3. It's not difficult to understand this stuff. I wrote a blog post that explains it here: www.sam-mallery.com/2013/02/how-to-set-audio-levels/ As for question 2, I recommend plugging your headphones into the headphone output of your D750. If your levels are correct in the H5, it will also sound good in the D750. If there is an audio problem in the H5, you should be able to hear it when monitoring through your D750 (all of this assumes you're connecting the Line Out of the H5 to the Mic In on your camera).

Regarding the sescom cable, when you are using it with your zoom h5, are you using the line out of the zoom h5, going into the cameras mic input. OR, are you using the zoom h5's headphone out into the cameras mic input? Just wondering because I noticed you used the headphone out the with the sescom cable using the zoom h4. So wasnt sure if you did the same method for the zoom h5, or used fhe line out instead. If you can let me know, it would be much appreciated! Thnx in advance!!

I used the Line output on the H5, as you can see in the still at 2:12 in the video. Since you can adjust the level of that output on the H5, I raised it to line-level so the Sescom cable could do its proper job of attenuating line-level to mic-level.
