Nice review. BTW, with the ZOOM H5 forgot to mention that if you unplug the XLR with the unit on and the phantom power on, the phantom power coil blows out. Mine did as well as numerous others who had the same thing happen and are mentioned all over online.

Huh, didnt know that, thanks for the warning. So far I couldn't make out this issue, my unit has both slots working and I do believe I unplugged while running sometime. But I will definitely stop that!

@@LucasPfaff yes it's a hit and miss thing. i had unplugged it several times prior to the failure. i tried everything, even reset the unit, with no success. upon investigation i learned that others had had similar. i even spoke with a couple and one had owned the unit for over 6 months before a failure the other the first time they did it and me about the 4th or 5th time and it failed and that time was an accidental unplug. I'm going to look at the tascam dr-40 although im going to look up "problems with" first :-)

I've seen a review about the h5 which is covered in a rubber shell compared to the tascam. Some complain that over time that the rubber deteriorates and goes sticky and finally crumbles. Have you or anyone else who has used this h5 product found that to be so? I notice the h6 has been changed to a plastic casing and wonder if this is the reason.

I know this behaviour from other devices, my H5 doesn't show this though. Depends surely on how often and how you use it

Der Song kommt aus der Software Sonicfire Pro und ist individuell für mich generiert. btw, Deine CS-Videos finde ich total stark. You can do "Dual/Backup" with the H5 also!

+Eli Iluz but only the L and R Inputs, Not the 1 and 2. The Tascam did all, which is clearly a better solution

I was really hoping this comparison would say which has the better internal mics as to frequency response and floor noise as recording sound effects with on board mics is my goal. Have you done such a test since making this video?

Roy Louden the DR40 is gone since before this video was uploaded, and if I recall correctly I never even used the internal mics of the H5 since then. that said, the preamps of the H5 are much newer and produce less noise, even for the internal mics. I can't tell you about frequency response though, truth be told I'd have likely issues with testing that even if I had tried in the first place :) to me, the H5 is universally more interesting, but I have a much different use for it than you. If you only wanted internal Mics, I'd have a look at the H1 or D5, these tiny recorders are really good and a lot cheaper

Thanks. Such devices should come with a frequency response chart in the manual the way all microphones do. But, for some reason, not one portable recorder with mics do.

Paulo Garcia I don't know the Tascam, but by now they feature good preamps. So you should choose the one which offers the best Features for your use :)

I think so. But remember, this is a comparison to the first DR40, there's an improved V2 afaik which I didn't use so far.

Zoom H5 records two tracks on different level -12 bouth in mics and outputs 😀

Gypsy Curse but not on XLR inputs, only the L/R inputs (so what comes from your attachment), page 03 in the manual makes that also pretty clear

Die einfache Antwort wäre, dass ich mit Englisch mehr Leute erreichen kann. Die etwas ausführlichere Antwort wäre, dass es damit zu tun hat wieso ich mit diesen Videos angefangen habe. Das ist aus dem Community-Gedanken entstanden, etwas beitragen zu wollen und etwas besser zeigen zu können, auch weil es viel Zuspruch gab. Da ich mich damals nur in englischen Kreisen bewegt habe wäre es befremdlich gewesen, alles auf deutsch zu machen; es weiterhin auf englisch zu halten ist also auch eine Form von Respekt

1:04 Uh, yes you can! Look at it: it even says ''EXIT MIC/LINE IN''! That's what the phantom power button is for!

MIC-Level is only accepted over XLR, not the TRS. TRS does only LINE - the manual is a bit vague here but it's in there too. An XLR to TRS adapter can help, but at least the RODE VXLR is useless with balanced signals. The problem is also that it does not support plugin power which is different from phantom power but needed by many Mics

Lucas Pfaff Oh, I appear to have misunderstood what you were saying in the video. I thought you were talking about the XLR when you said that you can't hook up microphones to it.

Nah, I only meant the TRS. And this is so annoying with the Tascam; if it wasn't for that, I would've kept it :/

KingOfShadows1500 I specifically needed it for binaural mics which are only available with Audio Jacks, so it was kinda specific. however, in retrospect it was a good Step for other reasons too, as the volume setup is usable while Recording (in case you need that) and the preamps are much better. I Miss the better Backup function of the Tascam though!
