Zootopia is such a wholesome take on the classic buddy cop movie trope and a great film for a movie commentary. It's both a lot of fun and takes a fairly healthy approach to working relationships. We both love Zootopia and are very happy to finally be getting to do this movie commentary!

It actually took me s very long while into my first watch of this movie to realize that. May just be because Im autistic but I want to point out that other things explaining racism is not only ‘dumbed down’ but made a lot more overt. In those sorts of videos there’s almost always one victim, one or a few aggressors, maybe a few bystanders, and maybe a few friends of the victim. But it paints this right side wrong side narrative that often skips over how widespread it is and why it happens or the variety of the intentions behind it. In zootopia, like in real life, everyone is a little but racist and you can see how they got it. Judy’s parents don’t like foxes just as a rule that was likely passed down from her parents. The first time Judy sees a fox on the job she’s inherently suspicious, but when she tries to burry her prejudices she still micro-aggressions him (Idk how to verb that), not on purpose but because those prejudices are still there. Clawhouser calls her cute by accident, not knowing the implications or that it’s an insult. Later Nick does it on purpose to antagonize her. I feel like there are a lot of people who are more concerned about being thought of as racist than they are actually being racist or not, and I think it’s because of that black and white narrative, the dumbed down one that says racism is bad and racist people are bad people and good people are entirely not racist. Zootopia breaks that narrative and offers a much more realistic understanding of how our world works. Having racist thoughts, and to a certain extent, being racist, isn’t evil! A lot of that was put there by society through no fault of your own. What’s evil is purposefully instilling those same thoughts in the next generation, or blocking other’s attempts to break the cycle of hatred.

35:54 Emmett Otterton was screaming about night howlers because he's a florist, therefore knows what they actually are. That's why he was targeted. He'd figured out what was going on, and was going to tell Mr. Big.
@ItsAsparageese
@ItsAsparageese 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I love this fact about Emmett, and I wish the movie had just made the tiniest bit more of a point about it. I didn't connect the dots until a third or fourth watch. I think if we'd had the littlest bit more happenstance emphasis on his plant knowledge, it would have caused us more provocation to speculate about him having some relevant knowledge and would have pointed our suspicions toward someone using a plant. Actually now that I've said that, I'm so glad they DON'T push it more, I take it back -- the fact that it's so easy for the audience to just roll with "oh wow predators are going nuts, guess it must be some predator problem" is what teaches us that we're just as susceptible to bias as the characters are. In another mystery context I'd want the clue to be a little more clearly a clue, but in this film I think it's great that we're allowed to just practice a little prejudice for the sake of the moral in the end.

If you look at Judy's struggle as a woman going into a majority male-dominated space (such as the police force) it makes more sense in my opinion. The environment being, in this case, more aggressive and assumed that she can't take it. That she's a small animal, therefore also seen as weaker. She is confident and takes up place, refusing to stay put, which irritates her superiors and co-workers. All visibly bigger and stronger, and her boss doesn't take her seriously when she explains that a predator had "Gone wild" because she would see any big animal as aggressive. In the case of Nick, you could see it through the lens of racism, of socio-economic status (Nick's mom apparently "scraped together enough money to buy a brand new uniform") which are also topics that intersect a lot. Dunno, just a thought.
@catdragon2584
@catdragon2584 2 жыл бұрын
I kind of thought the same thing. And I figure Bellwether could be the same, as she is a dark mirror of what Judy could’ve become if her internalized prejudice had been allowed to fester. White women in particular (and I say this as a white woman) are in a position where they are both part of an oppressed group as well as a group of oppressors, and they can either use the privilege they do have to lift up other oppressed groups or push them further down. But like the guys were saying at the end, the neat thing about this movie is that any category of animal here could be an allegory for any group and it would work. Being a member of one minority group doesn’t automatically make someone exempt from being prejudiced themselves. Anyone has the potential to become what they don’t want to be.

While misogyny is definitely also an aspect, I don't like the idea of you looking at this mo is very pointedly about racism and being like "actually let's look at this thing that I can relate too instead". Judy gives me Asian vibes, people tend to think of Asians as having certain career paths and staying in their lane, casual racism towards them is normalised, and even the cute thing where a lot of Asians, Japanese and non-japanese alike, don't like being called "kawaii" by non-asians. Nick I see as brown-Hispanic, personally cause as a black woman I can't see him as black. And also the sly nature to being a criminal seems to fit Hispanic stereotypes since we are usually seen as aggressively criminal.

@@LangkeeLongkee I didn't mean to diminish the fact that it is about racism at all, because it definitely is about racism, nor make it relatable for myself. I just thought to bring another point of view to the conversation, and an interpretation that I haven't seen brought up for this movie that could fit when seen through a different point of view. It is a movie about racism But it's interesting how it can portray other issues as well when looked at differently. Doesn't make the fact that it is mainly about racism any less important.

Damn. The panda one actually made my eye twitch. If I were you it would take every ounce of my strength not to hit someone who said that. I'm black and my other half is white. Neither of us is mixed and black and white couples are common but our combination is not. A black woman and a white man are still seen as an illegitimate couple. No one believes a white man and a black woman can actually love each other. To them, for a white man it's only sexual attraction and white men only fetishize us and don't really see us as people. And for black women, to them we only want to be with white men because we hate ourselves. Supposedly we think black people are ugly and bad and so we want to be with someone who doesn't look like us or whatever. Especially if the white guy happens to be rich, then obviously the black woman hates herself and is only with him for his money. It isn't fair. Children stare at us with confused looks on their faces and a lot of adults glare at us like they want us dead. Sometimes I am so scared. Why can black men be with white women and not deal with this nonsense? I feel sorry for our future children and what they will have to deal with. We will love and support them and do everything we can to protect them but I wish it didn't have to be that way.

The majority of me is white because my mom is portuguese descent and my dad is black besides his grandfather being white; so that's why I say the majority. Some people think I am asian (like Filipino mostly,) because there are a lot of them in our country; some others believe I am hispanic/latino, a couple thought Hawaiin (or Polynesian if that is the right term to use), another thought Indigenous; but there have been a lot of people to recognize that I am mixed, as well as people who thought I was just Portuguese. My boyfriend is black and I don't think we get any rude critism which is a relief. But were from Bermuda and I believe the majority is black, but there's portuguese people here who came from the Azores (including my family); there's also other caucasian ethicities here, as well as those from asian countries, some Indigenous, and a few of those from Hispanic/Latino countries as well. Although one thing I am confused about is that, you are called bermudian if you were born here, such as black, portuguese or other white ethnicities; but for some reason it is like asians or hispanic/latinos are not considered bermudian; I don't know if it is because they were not born here or not, but people always consider them as foreigners. I agree with them about wanting more solid platonic relationships, but gosh are these two too cute. And it's just such a sweet relationship. I love their characters so much. Zootpia is always a great rewatch for me.

@@isbammoi3358 when Judy asks Nick to be her partner on the police force, the way he looked at her made me feel like he was starting to fall for her. And that's why after her press conference interview he felt heartbroken when she went to use her fox repellent. @59:36 Oppression is more about power than numbers. Slaves outnumbered slave owners in the American South- it didn't prevent or end slavery. Also, Judy and Bellwether's storylines are both allegories for sexism, and in many countries (the ones where females AREN'T aborted or abandoned as infants) women *do* outnumber men and their contributions to society *are* "underappreciated." It is common for women's skills to be 'underestimated,' and for a woman to be perceived as "cute," weak, a "dumb bunny" (see: "blonde bimbo"), and generally less capable than a man. It's also common for women to be seen as "prey" to men's "predator"-- which Zootopia subverts many times, but addresses *directly* in Nick and Judy's relationship. Ultimately, Zootopia is about the prejudices that we all have, regardless of which group we belong to. We can be discriminated against on one axis, while we ourselves discriminate on another. The message is less about calling out other people for their prejudices, and more about being aware of and overcoming the prejudices we hold against others.

'Who still uses CDs' As a 23-year-old with a collection of at least 200 Kpop albums and around 70 CDs by non-Kpop-artists (like The Ramones, Mika, One Ok Rock, Prince, Billy Joel, Elton John, Green Day, and many more) who also has a good sound system which she uses every day, there are still some of us left who in fact use CDs. I just really like listening to full albums, especially the ones like American Idiot by Green Day that tell a story throughout the whole album, or Remember Us Youth, Part 2 by Day6 of which every song is a whole vibe. I also like the quality of my sound system more than any pair of headphones I have ever used, so there's that.

there actually is a quota in some places for stuff like tickets. that's why cops are usually harsher on tickets near the end of the month (in those areas) so they can reach it by the end of the month. even if there's no set quota, people who write more are often seen in a better light than those who don't. a lot of police chiefs and other higher-ups say there's no real quota but other people who work in LE say that there is. at least an unspoken one. its banned in some places but not federally mandated as far as I'm aware

Nick x Judy ship is very valid. Ironically enough, i’m someone who’s always frustrated when films or stories push a romantic relationship between a girl and the boy. Most of the time it’s unnecessary or just boring. But the chemistry between these two characters are too great for it to be platonic for me(I’m speaking for me. There’s some kind of expectations in my stomach for more of their relationship lol) anyways my conclusion: It’s fucking annoying when films forces a relationship between a guy and girl all the time. There are times when it’s appropriate, and times where their friendship should just be left alone like the wholesome friendship it. For this i’m kinda left with more expectations due to their social cues, and maybe their characters just played a big role into my shipping. But i’d approve if it became official.

For me personally i love Judy and Nick to be just cop buddies. And as for the sequel if we get a Zootopia 2 i would rather have a brand new cast of characters with maybe Nick and Judy having a few scene cameos. Because having Judy and Nick being the focus constantly i think would wear on too much. While having new main characters will explore more parts of Zootopia and have more interesting adventures in a city based on safe diversity.

My dad doesnt know me but I have a better relationship with him I can not really tell you anyone in my family who can say they know me. My sons father doesn't know a thing about his son so he just lies to his church people about what his son is doing with his life in terms of school and work etc. And now with the way my sons father is it will be the same where he won't know his son because he actively chooses to not be in his sons life.

So glad Maria is safe now and that you guys are together. I like that the film goes into implicit bias as well as straight out racism, cos it is true we don't often realise that we are being racist. It's just the the way we have been raised and don't know the harm we can cause. I also agree, it's a buddy cop movie (although seeing an interracial couple would be cute) if I were to have a ship going into a future film it would be a LGBTQIA+ one, of Clawhawser and Chief Bogo, I think that would be interesting on a number of levels ie body type subversion, and also a queer and interracial relationship.

If they make a sequel, I would love them to have Nick and Judy be a couple trying to get married and they throw the whole "It's against nature! A bunny and a fox can't have children!" All the 'reasons' queer couples and interracial couples still face discrimination. Like a bakery refusing to make a cake 🎂 The inconsistencies though are the brilliance of this movie. This is a fairytale for children and you can talk to them about the differences between a bunny and a fox and because it's not a 1 to 1, you can impose it to any topic: racial politics? Gender inequality? Queer rights? You can use it for a metaphor for just about anything
