F Murdoch! It's 'social' media, not corporate media, or news media, or advertising media. If there were no news sites on Facebook, I wouldn't care. These corporations can have a FREE Facebook page to share their own news, why would Facebook pay THEM? Murdoch should be happy anyone is directing clicks to their (paywalled) sites at all.

Secondly Old Media can place code on their Web Front End to stop the site being indexed by Search Engines - yet they permit it!?!?

When the "News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code" was first proposed by the LNP, I reckoned is was back to front. Social Media platforms allowed News Media to have pages which directed internet traffic to their pay walled subscription sites. As such, it was the News Media that should have been paying for the service provided by the Social Media platform, not the other way around. I still don't know how the Social Media platforms got sucked into the process in the first place.

When I first saw this legislation, I thought it was a joke. A bad one from a bunch of politicians who had no idea how the internet worked. And in the intervening years, still have not been educated, apparently. Given that Google, and Socials mostly rely on advertising revenue as income, they are hardly likely to be enthused about paying someone to put advertising on their content streams.

The code was BS from the word go. All news outlets constantly reference stories from other news outlets then give their own take on the subject at hand. So really all news outlets should contribute and all should take a cut. Right now it's just giving handouts to certain players who just happened to do favourable stories on the government who introduced it.

I like to read the UK online news, but the quality and the clickbait headlines drive me insane (along with typos cut and paste errors, factual mistakes) so when I was back in the UK last year I thought I would buy the paper editions of these online news sites, and to my surprise! back to how I remember the news!! no typos, no cut and paste errors, no ad-nauseam similar articles about the same celebs, its plain to see that the online model is a cheap hollowed out version for 24/7 consumption with the least amount of effort, probably paying those "click farms" in Vietnam to do their "cut and pasting" lolz. (just to clarify non of these news outlets were behind paywalls). We have lost all our local newspapers FYI, used to be delivered once a week, Murdoch bought them all Liverpool Leader, Macarthur Advertiser, Chronicle etc. They then starting appearing on FB and exactly how you say in this video, every single news article would provide a link to said article, suggestive, assuming it was free, but alas a PAY WALL, it was more amusing reading the angry comments from the community, in the end I blocked them all.
